AUSTIN — State officials resisted recent federal moves on guns Saturday as at least 1,000 activists rallied behind them at the Capitol.
The rally, crowded with gun owners and tea party and constitutional rights activists, was organized by the group Guns Across America. Led by Texas airline pilot Eric Reed, the group coordinated similar rallies in state capitals nationwide.
Speakers, including Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and freshman state Rep. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, decried President Barack Obama's proposal to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and said it violates the Second Amendment.
“The Second Amendment was not granted by the Constitution, it was granted by our creator,†Patterson said. “Therefore, the government can't take away our right.â€

About all I can say is WTH??? How can a Christian even say this??? Guns weren't even around during biblical times.

1. Actually, the Founders did not create the BOR's protections,
but recognized them as pre-existing. The "creator" notion was a graceful side-step to neutralize ardent religionists who sought to enshrine their theology within the BOR (one being John Adams).
Note: The "press," private property (alluded to in the Fourth), and the whole notion of Due Process hadn't been around very long, either.
Eleanors38 tries to explain what the OP's article means, but in doing so has revealed herself as not fitting in on misfit island. This post needs a thorough jury review as it is hurtful to the OP who needs help to get out of there...

The right to defend yourself did not start with the manufacture of the first gun, but it does embrace the use of guns. And that is how a Christian "can say that," Lefty. (BTW, you don't belong in Texas. Move to a coast.)

It relates back to the Declaration of Independence, which was not all that far in the past and a lot more in the political consciousness at the time the Bill of Rights was drafted...part of further codifying what those "Unalienable rights" were, with which Man had been endowed by his Creator, so despite the rhetoric used, the speechmaker had a sound foundation for saying what he did.

Exactly - the right given by God will be expressed in a different manner in different times and places (at some point technological development will make current guns pretty much irrelevant), but that doesn't lessen the right (and duty) of self-defence.
