This is a definition of terrorism.
We went to watch a movie last night. After Aurora and the two theater shootings last week here in the North County, we both were somewhat concerned. We still went to the theater. Every time the alert goes off (through text), I wonder if it is another shooting. Ironically overnight the cops confronted a person overnight who had an AR-15 with him...he shot himself with it. Nope, he dd not manage to kill himself either.
Good news, one less gun in circulation.
But the fact that we even have to think of the what ifs, that is the definition of terrorism.
Oh and kudos to the cops. They were confronted by an individual with a gun inside a theater and the only person shot was the one wielding the gun. Nobody else was hurt, at least physically.

Hmmm. Everytime the alert goes off? now what alert is that? and who would think it's another shooting?

1. our society is totally screwed when we have to wonder every time we step into a theater, or
a mall, or a school.

2. Or in my case when the alert goes off.
Ah, there's that alert again. Curious.
niyad (21,617 posts)
4. yes, I was thinking about that. I can turn off my phone and be out of touch--you cannot.
and if yours goes off, that generally means something bad has happened.
Now why is it the unemployed citizen reporter can't be out of touch? She has no children we know of. She is with her husband at the movie theater. Mystery.

6. Mostly minor stuff
But it was going off throughout the movie...checking the text without bothering people can be tricky.
Rude.

terrorism has traditionally been defined as the use of violence against the civilian population in pursuit of religious, political or ideological agendas. The last element is missing, as is an overarching group with such an agenda.
Dirty freeper troll.

10. You are conveniently forgetting the second part of a definition

To change the behavior of the target population, which is happening.
Pssst, Nads - it's only happening to you. You being a combat veteran medic citizen reporter. So nuanced. The Messiah should consider you for Secretary of State.

11. in terrorism
fear is not the ends but the means. Thus, the goal of terrorism is not to change the behavior of the population; it is the means to accomplish one's political, religious, ideological goal.
If someone enjoys using violence to get people scared but without any other agenda, that could be better classified as mass murderer.
Dirty freeper troll.

14. I'm not afraid to go to the movies
Nor is my family, friends or anyone else I know.
So, your premise doesn't hold up.
Just because you are afraid, doesn't mean anyone else is.
Unless, of course, you are the center of the universe, which then would make it true, yup.

13. I can't find a link to what you describe
Do you have one?
I found a story about a shooting Saturday afternoon, but it involved a handgun and the suspect was shot by cops.
Suspect shot in theatre: San Diego officers critically wound gun-wielding man
SAN DIEGO — Police shot and critically wounded a man Saturday suspected of chasing his girlfriend with a handgun across a shopping mall parking lot before ducking into a crowded movie theater where officers confronted him.
The shooting occurred inside the Reading Cinemas theater in northern San Diego around 3:50 p.m., and no moviegoers or officers were hurt, Officer David Stafford said.
He said officers went to an outdoor shopping center, where the theater is located, in response to a domestic violence call. No other details were immediately released.
A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said the suspect was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Was there another one?

15. Hmmmm
That's the only one I can find.
Maybe I need to have alerts sent to my phone so I can annoy the other patrons when I see a movie?
pintobean (8,017 posts)
17. Maybe it was a Facebook notification. nt
Nah - no pays Nads any attention on facebook. It will remain a mystery who is alerting Nads through text while she is trying to enjoy a movie, and why...

That one had come out.
Not a problem however.
It's always good to see Zappa and Pinto spank the gNads. :-)

She has her phone programmed to send her alert texts when a crime or fire happens?? WTF? :???: :mental:
-
She's either liar or she has somehow set her phone up to monitor the emergency bands. I think I know where I'll place my bets on that one.
I actually did receive an alert on my phone once. It was warning of possible tornadoes in the area and advising to take shelter. I found out later that the National Weather Service had cut a deal with cell phone providers to be able to send out warnings to all cell phones in an area that is under warning.
-
Alright, I admit it. I'm the one sending Nadin Baxter, Girl Reporter all of those "alert" texts. I have the oblate spheroid rolling out on all manner of false alarms across San Diego County.
My next project is to convince her that the Ten Plagues of Egypt are upon her.

Afraid to go to a movie? Seriously?? There have been what, 2 shootings in theaters in the last year? There are about 39,500 movie screens (http://www.natoonline.org/statisticsscreens.htm) in the US, so the odds of being shot at a movie must be somewhat lower than the odds of winning the lottery. Yet the DUmmies seriously think conservatives are the fearful ones??? :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

But, but, but...all of those are gun-free zones, and according to your heroes Obumbles and Plugs Biden, crimes don't happen in gun-free zones!

if the bald dwarf would have worn a negligee or a teddy to bed more often that could have been a different story.

I can't blame anyone for being afraid to go to a movie, have you seen the prices lately? :-)
-
i don't know about your movie theatres, but the one I go to has flashes premovie, of telling people to turn off the cell phones...Why didn't she put on vibrate???

Geeze, I am really behind the times here. The only people I know of that carry an alert device are Fireman when off duty. Could be off duty Policemen and woman in the big city's also carry them now a days, but I know of no civilians carrying them, and what need unless they may be paid TV or paper news reporters to have them.
This Nads AKA Louis Lane is giving me the idea someone in fire or police department gave her a devise that is paid for by the tax payers for the exclusive use of police and fire departments.
From her reporting as a citizen reporter that covers forest fires and occasional town meetings. she may have gone to Radio Shack and bought a scanner, but if so why ????? She does not report on police actions, fires in the city, I also have a scanner but do not take it to the movies with me. Miss Louis Lane better be carefull what she writes as someone in her neck of the woods may want to know where, how and when she received these alert devices she carries at all times.

She knows everything. Maybe she didn't think the vibrate feature was for silent notification. Maybe she thought it was for something else. A non-communicative feature of the phone.

Something from the Danny DeVito collection?

I don't see why not, they are currently running this country may as well cater to them. :-)

Damn you. Just the thought of that visual makes me want to gouge my eyeballs out with a fork and bleach the sockets. :hammer:

Are you suggesting that the rules designed for the lowly proles should applied to highest echelons of the press?

Compared to the crazy bald dwarf, Danny DeVito looks anorexic.

Nadin probably signed up for some app on her cell phone which alerts her to all of the big goings-on in the greater San Diego area. As a reporter/combat medic/saver of all mankind, she needs that information. It probably cost her $9.99 per month but she can write that off on her expense report through her major newspaper.
:hyper: :hyper:
-
On the other hand she could spend Zero dollars a month and pretend she has an app.
With Nads drama (that points to herself) is more important that truth.

Since Commissioner Gorton retired and took up deep-sea fishing, and the BatSignal was demiled, Nads Baxter, Girl Reporter has to use a different source.
I would not be surprised to learn that the "alert" service is provided by the big newspaper or a local TV station. Nads Baxter is doomed to be scooped on every major story by, well, everyone.
-
I have a scanner app. I could easily see the nads scrunt running the app full volume in a theater under the mistaken impression she's that important.

Radio Reference provides live audio (http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/) feeds of various EMS frequencies worldwide. They even have the police frequency from my little part of the world. It's great entertainment, especially on "pay-day" for all the welfare slime.

Delusional bitch ain't she?

I only really worry when I have to enter a building where the owners have made it plain to any armed criminal that there will be lots of unarmed, law-abiding citizens inside.
We should ban buildings!
