Title: Old movies
Post by: BEG on January 19, 2013, 10:04:25 PM
I have been sick for about a week now. During this snot filled week I have watched countless old movies. One thing I have learned is that Bette Davis was not a very good actress but I loved All About Eve.

Here are a list of what I watched:

All About Eve
What Ever Happened To Baby Jane
Hush Hush Sweet Charolete
Rear Window
It Happened One Night
The Philadelphia Story
A Letter To Three Wives (I had never heard of this movie until I found it on Amazon Prime)
Psycho
Dial M For Murder

Some of them i have seen before but it has been quite awhile. I'm in a classic movie phase, please suggest some of your favorite old movies.

I have seen all of those but it has been a long time since I have seen them. When I watch old movies I look up all the stars in the movies.  Of course the big name stars we know but about (somewhat) but I really find it interesting.

One of the women in "A Letter To Three Wives", Linda Darnell, had a tragic life. Her personal life was a mess but she was such a breathtakingly beautiful woman. She ended up dying from burns she got after her house caught fire in the 60's.

Kirk Douglas was in A Letter To Three Women.

The only one of those movies I have seen before is Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

My husband is going to be pissed because of all these old movies I'm going to watch, I won't get anything done. :p

How old is old? I would consider a movie thats 45 years old to be old but my parents would rarely watch a movie that "new"

I dont watch many old movies but there are a few I like, if they count as old.

Dr. Strangelove
2001
Spartacus
Goldfinger
Manchurian Candidate
Cool Hand Luke

My all time favorites...I don't really like to watch movies over and over again, but these I can always watch!!

An Affair to Remember w Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. As many times as I have seen it, it still makes me cry.

In Harm's Way w John Wayne and Patricia Neal. This was the last movie I saw with my mother. She was a Navy nurse too, during WWII and looked a lot like Patricia Neal did in this movie.

McClintock w John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Such a fun movie!!

Others:

Paint Your Wagon
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Rio Bravo
The Alamo
Donovan's Reef
The Longest Day
How the West was Won
The Sons of Katie Elder
Chisum
The Green Berets
Mr Roberts
Ensign Pulver
A Bridge Too Far
Back To Bataan

That's about all I watch other than a few sci-fi/fantasy shows I like.  Many of the ones I like have already been mentioned.

I'm also into British mysteries...currently hooked on Downton Abby, we're on the third season now.  It's more of a drama series, but really well done.  And if anyone else is into British mysteries, Downton Abby is really, really good...lots of well known and good actors too.

Currently the third season is airing on T.V., but if you want, you can get the first and second season free on Amazon Prime and download those to your set.

I head for B&W movies on search and finally found one that I had looked for for years.

The 1938 movie Hitchcock made in Germany about a child molester with Peter Lorie as the killer.

No subtitles all spoken in German but Hitchock was able to use the actors to , like the silent films to tell the story.   Film is called    M    a remarkable film, showed Hitchcock's  brilliance back then.

There were so many wonderful actresses whose life was a mess (Patty Duke, Judy Garland).  I did read about Linda Darnell because she is a local legend in the Skokie area. Such a shame she died.

The High and The Mighty - John Wayne

American Graffiti - I was at the Omaha one night event showing for this one a few months ago helping out with showing off models of cars from the movie and the era.

Blazing Saddles - Mel Brooks

Ice Station Zebra - A spy movie but nothing like James Bond or the Bourne movies.

I enjoy old movies myself.  If there is nothing in prime time I go look up TCM or AMC to see what is on.  Many times it is better than what is showing on the other TV channels.  Years ago they did not repeat movies like they do now so many times I have seen a movie and it is being repeated through out the week

I showed American Graffiti when I was a projectionist. The axle chained to the tree(?) was what we pulled on a prick cop. When I think of what might have happened.........

We cut nothing loose! We chained it up, waited for the asshole to come out of a cafe', and then peeled out spraying his hood and windshield with rocks and gravel.

There could have been an explosion! Geeeeeezzz........

"Old" is relative...

The Wizard of Oz was released in 1939.

I saw it for the first time on TV in 1967, twenty-eight years later, at the age of three.

In 2009 I babysat my (then) youngest cousin, aged three, and showed him The Empire Strikes Back.

Then it hit me.

Empire, released in 1981, being viewed by a three-year-old, twenty-eight years later.

The Empire Strikes Back is my little cousin's The Wizard of Oz.

(Yes, he's seen Oz, too.  On a big screen, at the age of six.  A local theater plays Saturday matinees of old flix.)

Rumor has it that George himself showed up to the event in Omaha I was at. I didn't see him but when my friend Bruce who put the event on checked with the limo service he used to bring the guest in ,they confirmed that they did pick Mr Lucas up and took him to the show and then drove him back to the airport after it was done.

Here's a link to the event. On Page two there is a picture of the display I helped organize and set up with my brothers Soundtrack LP to the movie and the model cars from the show too. That's me standing next to the table.
