Section 8 housing voucher distribution canceled after thousands waiting in line get out of control
Source: WXYZ Detroit

TAYLOR, Mich. (WXYZ) -

A chaotic scene erupted at the Taylor Human Services Center when the crowd waiting for a Section 8 housing voucher distribution got out of control.

~ snip ~

Police say thousands of people from all over the area were at the center. Many were homeless, single moms, or disabled. They were hoping to get help paying for their housing from the government.

"There was elderly, disabled people, pregnant single women. They were here for help, to get their Section 8 vouchers. It just shows you what a desperate need... some were here since yesterday," said Rhianna Rodriguez

~ snip ~

The crowd had grown overnight as more and more people arrived. Witnesses say the line stretched for a mile down Lange Road.

Aren't there more than a few empty buildings that can be rehabbed into multi-dwellings for these people on Section 8? Perhaps even have the future residents help?

Come on now America, we can do so much better if we only tried a bit harder.

Who's gonna pay for the refurb?

DETROIT (AP) — The number of empty homes and vacant rental properties grew by nearly 50 percent in Michigan over the past decade as the state struggled through one of the toughest economies in the country, according to 2010 census figures released today.

Nearly 660,000 homes and apartments were vacant last year across the state, or 14.6 percent, compared with fewer than 450,000 in 2000.

“Michigan was the only state to lose population this decade and until recently had the highest unemployment rate in the nation,” said Jeff Nutting, a demographer with the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, a regional planning group.

Yes, this is the kind of waste that the "creative destruction" of capitalism brings.

Until Right to Work was signed into law. After that, it started to improve.

full-time before I began teaching.

We did then, still do, and just finished one last month, take properties stripped to the studs and rebuild them and rent them at market.

Our last project: an 8 unit two story complex of one bedroom units. Purchase: $10,000. Cost to finish: $22,000 plus 200 hours of labor by me and my oldest son. 100% are rented out at $600 per month. Less than 5 years to cover all costs, and an ongoing profit margin of more than 20% per annum on gross sales.

I began working for my grandfather at age 16, and when he died at 86, he had a 2 year waiting list of people wanting him to get to their projects. Not too bad for a German immigrant who didn't speak a word of English when he came her at age 14 on his own, eh?

Sure, it's work. So is dealing with the corrosive effects, physical, mental and spiritual, of homeless people or those crowded up in awful inadequate and even dangerous housing.

Can't some of these people in Detroit go South into Canada?  Maybe they need to show them some films of how our neighbors to the South cross the Rio Grande to get them started.  Windsor; the new El Paso.

One would think section 8 housing would be a landlords dream but almost no one will enter in the program.

Know why DUmbasses?

Open to correction if wrong but it has been my understanding that once you agree to take government money you relinquish all control over your property.
In short, for the duration of the rent contract the scum sucking parasites can reduce your property to a dung pile (which is often the case) and you can do nothing to remove them.

Look no farther then a mirror for the reason behind all your problems idiots.

Just over a decade ago, before I bought my first house, the apartment complex in which I lived began to accept Section 8 vouchers.

I went from a very nice, quiet, clean place to a shithole in less than a year.  Multiple incidents which required police, a couple making the LA news.  Those who weren't on Section 8 had to pick up the tab for the increase in rent, so instead of a modest amount, we were looking at 12-15 percent per year rent increases.

I couldn't get out of that shithole fast enough--and sure enough, it went even further downhill in the years that followed.

Carl and Sparky are right. After hurricane Ike came through FEMA was giving people who were displaced these vouchers for housing. They were good for a year. I had some women come into my office to look at rentals and they showed me their vouchers.

After reading it there was no way I would rent to them. The voucher said that FEMA would cover their rent in full for a few months then would decrease by $50/month until the renter was paying the full amount. There was a catch though. There was a paragraph that said if I didn't get the full months rent I could NOT use that as an excuse to evict. SERIOUSLY?

I called FEMA to make sure I was reading it correctly and they assured me I was.

They found an individual owner that did rent to them. They never paid their portion of the rent and they destroyed his house.

Section 8 is designed to spread out the low lifes to good neighborhoods and destroy them.

Section 8 is a good way to destroy communities.

It spreads the high crime rate of one area out over a larger area making it appear that crime rates in that one area are down.

Who's gonna pay for the refurb?

Jack Kemp was Reagan's, Housing Secretary.

He turned the buildings over to the residents for ownership.

Suddenly they had a vested interest in maintaining the property.

I saw that howling mob on the news this morning.  Another consequence of depending wholly on the government for food, housing, everything.  They can dangle a "voucher" in front of your nose, then whip it away just as suddenly.  And get you arrested for acting up.  What an attractive prospect.

What made this program such a POS is the lack of accountability.  You can destroy the joint, and you will never be liable, not with money, not with a jail sentence, nothing.  Nobody has pride of "this is my place, let's keep it decent" because they're not paying for anything.

Bring back the Poor Houses, dormitory-style.  Harsh?

Nope, not too harsh.  But then, I'm also the one who thinks that beans and rice should be a staple for anyone on welfare.

OMG I had that same thing happen too!  We were in the luxury area of town.  It changed to section 8 without even notice to us and I remember I woke up one night abotu 4 months after it became section 8 and there were 2 guys outside and had the neighbors new car up on blocks taking the tires.  I couldn't believe it.  My tires got slashed too.  We got the hell out of there and it is now just awful to look at it.  You would be shocked at how it looked and how it looks now.  They tore it to shit and then want to keep coming east.  They are like cancer.

When I was living at Caleb, one of the hgrs told me that the people who had vouchers, damaged their unit the most. not just uncleanliness, but holes in walls, broken windows, ripped screens. The cops were always there for some reason or another....
I paid full rent, very quiet and kept to myself...Now I am in the most awesome studio, no section 8,,,,...I love my place!!! :-)

Section 8 is designed to spread out the low lifes to good neighborhoods and destroy them.

Yep.

Section 8 is a good way to destroy communities.

Yep.

The original idea was good and noble. Put the poor into communities that were self sufficient and maybe their kids would learn something about it. But like every other program the government comes up with it failed.

They tried that shit here when I was growing up. Had some section 8 housing about 8 blocks down the road. Went to school with their kids. Most of the kids were too damn stupid to keep up in class. The fruit don't fall far from the tree as they say.

My opinion? You subsidize irresponsible behavior, you get more of it. Hence the pavement apes in the inner cities.   :censored: :censored:

....................and the DUmmies continue to blame "society" and "capitalism."

Sorry, DUmmies.  This is the fault of liberal policy from way back in the 60s and 70s.  Women who choose to have babies out of wedlock are rewarded for having babies without the benefit of the father's help.

Liberalism has destroyed American families, and continues to do so.

The DUmmies themselves are evidence of failed liberal policy from the 1960s and 1970s and continuing through today with no end in sight.  You only have yourselves to blame.

I have an older brother, while riding his bike, was run over by a welfare queen and severely injured.  He's in assisted living and receives disability.  The welfare queen in question did not have insurance and was driving on a suspended license and hit him while talking on her cell phone.  She never suffered any punishment but that's a moot point now.

Anyway, my brother receives all of the welfare benefits and he deserves them.  However, he has now somehow received his third working Obama phone.  It's hard to get a straight story from him so I don't know the details but I have to question why he has three Obama phones in his possession; more in terms of how does anyone get three Obama phones?

Section 8 is designed to spread out the low lifes to good neighborhoods and destroy them.

That's what happened to the old neighborhood from my high school days.  When my parents bought there it was a nice, clean, safe working class area.  Kids could walk to school or play outdoors and parents didn't worry.  In the late 80's Section 8 took hold, kept creeping and it's a pit now.  I drove through it in October during a trip home and the conditions made me puddle up.

Ditto for me too.

I lived in a higher end apartment complex on the North side of Milwaukee. It was nice because the rent was high enough to keep the rift-raft out. Then they started to accept Section 8 housing and the within a year the place started to turn into a dump. I lived there long enough to renew my lease twice. They tried raising my rent but I told them no. No way I was going to pay more to live in an area that was turning into a dump. I broke my lease 3 months after signing a new one because someone was car jacked in one of the parking lots of our complex. That was the last straw. Lucky for me a major retailer was moving a bunch of people to Milwaukee at the time and that allowed me to avoid a penalty for breaking my lease.

When I was looking for other places to live, one of the 1st things I would ask was if they accepted Section 8. If they said yes, I would thank them for their time and move on to the next listing.

I just don't understand tearing up someone else's shit.  You are allowed to live somewhere and you should be very grateful yet you let it turn to crap. Is that what they think about themselves?  Do they think that is all they are worth?  If so, then don't even catch an attitude when someone stereotypes your ass.

You know of course, who made a fortune at this racket.  Valerie Jarrett.  With some seed capital, she bought some tenements.  Let them go right to shit.  At which point she finagled some government money to fix them up real nice, on everyone else's dime.  Meanwhile, she collects Section 8 rent.  They go right to shit again.  Lather, rinse, and repeat.  Chicago, of course.

I think it has a lot to do with how one is raised. A lot of people live on another persons assistance whether its child/ spousal support and don't do this. I know a few single mother awhile wouldn't dream of tearing up someone else's home they are leasing all to hell. In essence you are borrowing thier property in a sense. You don't tear shit up whether its yours or someone else. There is a sense I responsibility to someone that you are a good steward to something they entrusted you with. It's all about attitude. Why we continue to fully in most cases support lousy parents who raise lousy adults in this lifestyle is beyond me. We are supplementing this bad behavior when there should be serious consequences to it especially when all it's breeding is more lowlives.

It's the feeling of entitlement, kind of like when a DUmmie takes out a loan.  They are grateful to begin with but as time goes on they cannot help but feel angry that someone would dare expect them to fulfill their contractual obligations.  They get angry and they lash out at whoever it is who has helped them.

Oh, and no self-respect.
