My car's got a blown head gasket, $1,500 to repair. Do I really give a shit who the Treas Sec is?
They're all vultures.

Meanwhile, I'm riding the bus.

And I'm not happy about it.

Bake

I would think that a collectivist scumbag like you, Bake, would be glad to get out of your polluting, alienating car and ride around with your fellow citizens.  (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022175157)

In any case, what does the Treasury secretary have to do with it? Does he owe you money? Have 0bama mint a $1500 coin for you.

Granted, I have never lived in NYC or a few other major U.S. cities with adequate public transportation.

But I lived in Chicago for 10 years as an adult, so I think I can safely render my thoughts on the subject.

At least in Chicago, it is only convenient to take the "El" if you live near it.  And even then, it is a pain in the ass.  Takes longer and is annoying as hell.  When I was having car issues, was happy to take it.  But I could just choose to drive in an hour earlier, beating some of the traffic to the Loop. And pulled into a garage, which at the time cost $150 a month, or $12/day.  I know prices have gone way up now, which thankfully I avoided by getting a job in the suburbs.  But unless you live very close to the El, it is a pain, especially during winter.

My former brother-in-law is a lawyer, worked in the loop & probably made at least $300k a year.  He & his family lived a block from an El stop, and he would take it to & from work several days a week, just for the convenience factor. And he only lived a mile from myself & the former Mrs. Wiggum.  For me, I would have to take a bus six blocks, taking 10 min. Then, damn near an hour on the Brown Line train just to get to the loop. Google it if you wish, the schedules are online.  Pain in the freaking ass.

I know how ya feel, Ralph, I lived in Elk Grove Village.

I drove several miles to Wood Dale to wait on the open platform, rain, sun or snow, for the Milwaukee Road commuter. Then ride to the station in downtown Chitago. Then walk several blocks, rain, sun or snow, to the old Insurance Exchange Building. It sucked.

I transfered back to Kansas City where I could drive from the comfort of home all the way to a huge parking lot across the street from work - in rain, sun or snow.

And you're taking the bus to work ...

10. And THAT was exactly my point.

Whether it's Geithner or Jack Low or whoever, doesn't matter to me when I'm waiting for the bus and too broke to fix my car. Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Bankfiend and the rest can pal around with the Administration (and oh yes, they do). I'm waiting for the 12:10 bus.

12. And people who can't afford the copay for their prescriptions

Should just be glad we've got Obamacare, right?

I take two prescriptions every day that I need TO LIVE. Insurance doesn't cover until I'm $2400 out of pocket. But hey, I'm thrilled we've got Obamacare.

And meanwhile, the bus is late.

I'm guessing you're not waiting for the bus. When life sucks that bad, yeah, it's all about getting through one day at a time.

Bake

How is it that the smartest people in the world, and who naturally should have high paying jobs since high intelligence is well compensated, don't have the money set aside to pay their bills?

And "Should just be glad we've got Obamacare, right?"??  Sounds like a set up for the next round of "I got what I asked for, but it still isn't enough!!"

33. I hear you.

I'm just coming back from practically emptying my retirement account because I've been out of work a year and a half and 30 of the last 48 months. Who would have thought the Bush years were going to be the high point of my career?

What the **** does it matter which bloodsucker they put at treasury? It's not going to be the ballbuster we need. Never that.

You've made your bed and now you'll have to lie in it DUmmy.

That is one of the most gratifying, pleasing, enjoyable posts I've read at the DUmp in ages!

I hope the bastard and his family starve in the dark.

24. Granted, I did not pay for it

Since it was due to a mistake at the shop...but on a Honda civic it would have been 800, like others have sad, you're getting over charged.

35. I had to put four new tires on my car yesterday

because one of them failed spectacularly. By that I mean I have never seen a tire do that, ever. When I finally got to a lot where I could put on the spare, there were only a few shreds of rubber clinging to the bare rim.

I just barely made it, too, the rim had some scuffs but was undamaged. For that much, I am grateful.

Still, one of the last things I thought about when I set off to get my eyebrows lowered yesterday was having to get 4 new tires on the car to make it home.

Ugly surprises, we has 'em.

At least blown head gaskets are usually easy enough fixes once they tear the engine down to it.

I worked in Itasca for three years too, out in the "hood" you were referring to. Never bothered to look up a Metra schedule because I knew it would be a nightmare even trying to take public transportation.

**** you you sloth. My husband has been riding his bike to the train, from the train stop to work and back again. He rode his bike about 18 miles a day and increased his commute time from 25 minutes one way to 2 1/2 hours total.

Those of you here who have read my posts in the private forum know that he hasn't been able to drive for 6 months because of a seizure. Not one of the leeches at DU would do that. They would rather apply for disability.

By the way lazy ass, my husband was cleared yesterday by the doctor to drive.  I wonder if you would even follow doctors orders.  I bet you would either claim you couldn't work or drive anyway risking the chance of having another seizure and killing someone.

Actually, what I can't figure out is if he had one tire blow, why did he need to buy four?

People running around on crappy tires and then whining about them is a serious pet peeve of mine.

Bake, quit yer bitching, get your ass down to Auto Zone, buy a head gasket for About $45.00 and change it yourself. You will save a ton of money and get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Maybe so, but "eyebrows/ears lowered" is invariably slang for a man's haircut.

I have never once heard it used in reference to a woman, but here we're talking about a DUmpette, not a woman.

I guess DUmmy Warpy shares President von Hindenberg's hairstyle as well as his face.

I was going to say the same thing.

My youngest and I replaced head gaskets on her Toyota pick up.  Over head cam.  Never knew there were so many gaskets to the whole kit, but we got it done and it worked well.

Not rocket science.  We did it with a Hanes manual.

Longview was writing in DUmmiespeak, so the lurkers would know that "Haynes" is pronounced "Hanes", and wouldn't look like fools asking for one.

IMO, if the DUmmie is smart enough to KNOW it's a blown head gasket, it's smart enough to CHANGE a head gasket.

Hell, I can do it, and I'm just a "knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, gun-toting, toothless, hapless, hopeless, brainless member of the VWRC."    :lmao:

I'm thankful your husband was cleared to start driving again and worked so hard at getting better.

It's been almost a year since I had my stroke. I was told, even with minor strokes, most  people qualify for disability...I went back to work in three weeks, with my doctor's blessing.

I like to work. I know too many others that go on disability then pick up some type of cash side job. I just can't do that.

The mechanic at the garage told him that and how much it would cost, DD. You don't think a dummie is gonna do something like open the hood of their car, do you?

Now having said that... I haven't worked on a car, outside of changing breaks or something like that, since they started putting all that computer shit and vacuum hoses on it. There is just waaay too much shit on engines now that you can screw up and I just don't have the time to fool with it. It's just easier... and usually cheaper in the long run... to take it up the street to the garage and let them fix it.

I'm just getting too damned old to bend over a car and everything in there is so tight now.  :cheersmate:

True, I doubt a DUmmie would know the difference between a radiator cap and a dipstick, much less where to find them.

I thought I'd have the same problem when I did fleet maintenance for our trucking company, when the older carburated trucks were being replaced with the newer fuel injected ones.  As soon as I figured out which sensor did what, I could troubleshoot a problem as good as the scanner would.  (OBD I).  But still, I prefer the older iron, more underhood space, fewer wires, (more hoses, though).

As far as age, you are younger than I am, boy!  If you are "too old to bend over a car", buy, rent, or borrow a lift.  (My brother has one in his shop, and as a bonus, the shop is heated, too!  It's BYOF,  Bring Your Own Firewood).   :lmao:

Besides, I hate paying some zit-faced greasemonkey $80/hour to do something I can do myself.  The only time my vehicles go to the shop are for state inspections, wheel alignments, and recalls.

I wish our town had public transportation.

Senior Citizens that can no longer drive either have to try and make an appt. with the senior center for a ride to the doctor's office or take a taxi cab. They even have to take a cab to get groceries.

We have 35k plus residents, I think it would help a lot of people. As much money as Harry Reid's state seems to waste, they could at least waste a little bit on our seniors that don't have anyone to help them out. I know when my mother's health is good, she has taken a few of her friends to the doctor, either here in town or into Las Vegas, as Las Vegas is where the specialists and surgeons are.

Public transportation might be a pain, but it sure does help a lot of people get around. In cities like Chicago it really does cut down on some of the traffic. Last time I used the L in Chicago it was to go to Wrigley Field. We parked outside of town, making it much easier.

$80/hr? Shiite DD!! The guy at the garage is older than me. He got the tools and such and knows what he is doing. Usually he charges me 50/hr. Course I always take care of him around harvest time.

It just ain't worth my time to fool with that shit anymore.  Not enough hours in the day anymore seems like. Call him up, tell him what's wrong, drop it off in the morning, stop by in the evening and pick it up.  It's fixed and I don't have to get greasy or buy some damned tool that I need.

Works for me!   :cheersmate: :cheersmate:
