We have a "right" to own guns, but not a right to health care, food, shelter, clothing, employment
Seems to me there's something seriously wrong with this picture.
And there's definitely something fundamentally wrong when you have a large portion of the country that would threaten a civil war over their "right" to own semi-automatic assault weapons, but gets equally pissed off at the mere thought of guaranteeing everyone health coverage.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022169074
The founding fathers had the nerve to believe that it was your responsibility to buy your own food, shelter, healthcare, and later your own damn iPhones. This notion that you are owed your basic existence is what is wrong with this country. In a just world you freeloading moochers would starve to death or get off your asses and go do some of that work that is so beneath you.
And hell yeah we are pissed about "guaranteeing everyone health care". You know why? Because we think you are responsible for your own healthcare. Why should we not only have to shell out the money to cover you but have our own health care diminished because we are paying for your every hangnail.

3. When the Second Amendment was written
people did not rely on the government for healthcare, food, shelter, clothing or employment. They were industrious and self reliant. The RKBA was codified in the BOR to prevent the citizen from losing what they had worked for to a foreign power, an internal threat or their fellow man seeking to take what was not theirs. The reason people are so adamant about their gun rights is that this idea is still in their DNA. If they lose their arms then what they have and what they have worked for all their lives can be easily taken away.

we here on DU, including me, would think necessary on compassionate and human rights grounds.
Nonetheless, we have a Constitution, which may be amended and stretched, that is the basic law of the land.
As a legal matter, and I'm a lawyer unfortunately, we can't just dump it when it's inconvenient. If we did that, we would not have a firm foundation in law.
Most people on DU see the US not as a particular people but as a legal entity. Take away the basic law and you don't have much left to hold us together over the years.
So long as the 2d Amendment remains in its current form, the courts and the government must respect it.
I would applaud efforts to amend the Amendment, which isn't an easy process by design, but until then laws and regulations can only do so much.
This upsets the DUmmies too.

"the haves" to get off of our backs; stop controlling everything with money; let people decide for themselves what they want their taxes to pay for, instead of un-ending war and for-profit "health" "care".
Yeah, there are thieves out there, but the gun response is disproportionate to the possibilities of being robbed, especially when those who protect gun-ownership also hate police, so law-enforcement funding is under attack politically. And someone tell us why fears that your house is going to be robbed, despite high-tech very sophisticated alarm systems that are easily available, is justification for CONCEALED CARRY IN PUBLIC.
And for whatever danger of being robbed in public, why wouldn't OPEN CARRY help prevent that?
And, if like other gun advocates, you tell me that open carry in public will invite being shot by other gun owners, you're basically proving my point: what the **** is the purpose of all of this? And even if I cannot disabuse you of mistakes you are making about all of that, WHY MUST I BE INVOLVED, AGAINST MY WILL, IN THE RISKS THAT YOU CHOOSE?
Funny, when you advocate taking people's stuff they think that you want to take their stuff. Crazy aint it? :rotf:

treats and law enforcement to protect us from each other. So there is no earthly need for individuals to be armed to the teeth.
We have laws and courts (though teabaggers want an end to them, too) to keep people from taking your stuff from you. I don't suppose it has ever occurred to gun nutters to exercise their legal rights via our justice system. They seem to want to solve ALL of life's little problems by waving and firing their guns and killing anyone who frightens them.
What a bunch of sissy two-year-olds.
Yep and there is a fire station about 4 blocks from my house so I don't need a fire extinguisher since they have all that cool equipment. :whatever:
Yes we have police and they are minutes away from your house, I'm sure the guy who breaks in your house and wants to harm you will gladly sit and wait until the cops get there. When you are dead the justice system aint gonna bring you back to life, if you have a gun then the cops can scoop up the bad guy's body instead of yours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Bill_of_Rights
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
The right for the government to control you.

Ha! (as Tweety says it.) Wouldn't it just be peachy if we could get FDR's 2nd Bill of Rights passed? Let's see, who could bring it to the floor? Elizabeth & the Democratic women in the Senate? Nancy and the Democratic women in the House? Actually, this would be in the form of a Constitutional Amendment, where each of the States' would have to ratify it, each with a 2/3 vote? Maybe we could attach a banning of the Citizen's United? Let's put a bug in someone's ear, what say?

With respect to the two words 'general welfare,' I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. The right to bear arms allows people the means to protect themselves, their families, and their belongings. The entire bill of rights is focused on protecting people from an overbearing government. The Founding Fathers expected people to provide for their own well being, the bill of rights to help make certain that the government doesn't interfere with that unnecessarily.
Why should a person who doesn't care enough about feeding themselves to prioritize food purchases be guaranteed food? A pound of dried rice costs around $1.25, dried beans cost about the same. Even the most basic minimum wage job would allow you to eat.
-
I'm thinking this needs phrased properly.
We have a right to own guns, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to access to health care, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to food, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to shelter, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to clothing, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to employment opportunities, which the individual looks for.
Otherwise, I'm not seeing where the right to own a firearm is superior to all these other rights.

Careful, Frank. The primitives cannot comprehend any sentence that says "which the individual pays for." In their feeble minds, they don't have to pay for anything.

That's the thing: the rights enumerated in the constitution are conditioned on the idea that it is your responsibility to exercise them. I have the right to own a gun. I do not have the right to make you buy it for me. I have the freedom of speech, but I cannot demand that NBC gives me airtime or even that the local newspaper has to print my LTTE. I do have a right to earn a living. I do not have the right to force Bill Gates to provide me one.

The Bill of No Rights
Courtesy of Lewis W. Napper
We, the sensible of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt-ridden delusional, and other liberal, commie, pinko bedwetters.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that a whole lot of people were confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of No Rights.
ARTICLE I
You do not have the right to a new car, big-screen color TV or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.
ARTICLE II
You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.
ARTICLE III
You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all of your relatives independently wealthy.
ARTICLE IV
You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.
ARTICLE V
You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.
ARTICLE VI
You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and kill you.
ARTICLE VII
You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big-screen color TV or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII
You do not have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.
ARTICLE IX
You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have one, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities in education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.
ARTICLE X
You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness -- which, by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws created by those around you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

94. Totally messed up analogy
You don't have any more of right to own guns than you do to health care, food, shelter, clothing and employment. Less, in fact.
Absolutely no one is going to buy a gun for you if you claim poverty, but we do have programs to fund health care, food, and shelter for the poor. We also have a lot of charities that even try to raise funds for clothing, as well as some basic welfare programs that do provide some living money that can be used to buy necessities such as clothing (although darned little).
Unless you are a felon or fall into a few other categories, you have the right to buy most types of guns. You also have the right to buy food, rent a place, buy clothing, and find a job if you can get one.
We have laws on the books preventing people from discriminating against a lot of people for renting and employment, because of past sad history. So one could argue that you have more of a legal right to shelter and employment than you do to own a gun. You really do have more of a right to all of the things you say we don't have a right to than you do to own a gun. A felon cannot be prohibited from buying food or clothing, for example.
Most of the "rights" in our Constitution are either due-process based or negative rights - i.e. the government can't prevent you from this or that, but that doesn't mean the government is obligated to fund the thing or activity to which you have a right.
What this person and JohnnyBoots said made perfect sense to me (they both really should escape). The DUmmies just sneer at them, "nice freeper talking point, troll."

I trolled on some LW board years ago and this topic came up; that the USA should provide food, shelter, clothing, and healthcare for everyone regardless of your ability to pay. The premis was that with these necessities in life no longer a concern, people could work productively knowing that no matter what happened they could always have the basics. Of course this would all be provided for by tax receipts.
I said that was great, that I was an accountant, but I really wanted to be a novelist. If we had that type of society then I could quit my job knowing that I would have the basics and could spend the next 10-20 years working on my novel. Well, this wouldn't do. Why, I asked? Well, I'd be sucking from society and not contributing anything back. Not at first, I said, but when my novel was published then the sales would generate taxable income. But even then, if my novel bombed and it didn't make anything, I could learn from my experiences and spend the next 10-20 years writing my next novel and get it right. No, no, no. That just wouldn't do in their world. I had to stay an accountant.
Of course, they never could tell me who would stop me or anyone else who decided to do the same thing. Libs are very consistent at not thinking things through to the end.
.

They really don't understand what the BOR is, do they ?
The Bill of Rights is not a list of things that Government provides, but is a list of things that Government can't interfere with. Its purpose is to safeguard the citizens of the United States from overreaching federal policies.

An iPod or other music device.
Seriously, that's the minimum I would provide everyone with if I was in charge of the country.
I need a new refrigerator, and if DUmmy randome were in charge, I could save nearly two thousand bucks.

We have a "right" to own guns, but not a right to health care, food, shelter, clothing, employment
Seems to me there's something seriously wrong with this picture.
The distinction isn't difficult for anyone possessed of an IQ above 85 to figure out, you big fat prancer. You're free to buy and keep any gun you can afford and is otherwise legal. The same is true of your food, shelter, and healthcare - if you can afford it, you can have it.
:whatever:

I'm thinking this needs phrased properly.
We have a right to own guns, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to access to health care, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to food, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to shelter, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to clothing, which the individual pays for.
We have a right to employment opportunities, which the individual looks for.
Otherwise, I'm not seeing where the right to own a firearm is superior to all these other rights.

134. A lot of other things should be on the list as indispensible 'rights'.
And if we pared back the military and closed a few thousand loopholes, we'd have money enough to guarantee these things to everyone. (Well, maybe encourage less population, too.)
In a perfect world, every household would have the following (provided they were wanted):
A computer. Without internet access? Or is that "free," too?
A cell phone. Without a usage plan? Or is that "free," too?
A car. Without gasoline? Or is that "free," too?
Air conditioning. Without an electric bill? Or is that "free," too?
A television. Without cable service? Or is that "free," too?
A refrigerator. Without electricty and food? Or are those "free," too?
A stove. Without gas or electric? Or is that "free," too?
An iPod or other music device. Without itunes? Or is that "free," too?
Seriously, that's the minimum I would provide everyone with if I was in charge of the country.
Seriously, randome (and other lurkers), your votes will make the cost of running your A/C, filling your fridge, driving your car, and everything else climb in cost tremendously. Lord O has already started closing power plants, and his policies have badly damaged our ability to obtain oil on all public land. You can give everyone all this junk, but it won't help if there is no energy to run them all. :mental:

I still want that fridge.
And DUmmy randome forgot to include a vacation.

I really really pray this is a troll, because if the voters have become this stupid we are ****ed.

Don`t forget free delivery of a dime bag whenever the supply has run out.

Sadly I don't believe its a troll.
Remember...63% of the country thinks its Bush's fault the economy is the way it is.
This DUmmie is part of that same group of low information voters.

You do have a "right" to acquire those things... but only if YOU pay for them. Once you start taking money from other people to provide you with those things then it is no longer a right, but theft.
I'll play though dummie. I have a right to half your weed. Give it up!!!! I have a right to make you cut my grass. Get yer ass over here and start cutting. Give me a few minutes and I can come up with lots more!!!
See how that works, dummie?

They have the right to provide for themselves. Nothing more.

They have the right to provide for themselves. Nothing more.
Let's adjust that a tad, shall we?
They have the right to provide for themselves with their own sweat and labor--not taking anyone else's stuff. Nothing more.
There!

You're getting your privileges in my rights... no you're getting your rights into my privileges.

In the Old Testament it was the people's job to give alms to the poor every three years.
A tenth of a tithe was meant to go to the Levites and then the Levites were supposed to tithe to the Lord. Very interesting how this worked. They were supposed to be so prosperous that even though the Levites would give 10% they would still have enough. But the Israelites screwed that up by disobeying God. World can't learn from its mistakes.
