Title: My son achieved his Tae Kwon Doe yellow belt today.
Post by: Conservative Libertarian on January 05, 2013, 09:59:30 PM
I'm proud of him. He's 13 years old and has been taking this marial art for approx. 3 months.

I have seen a big change in him. He is more confident and is learning of what he is physically capable.

His master instructor is a retired police officer. He has told me that my son is one of the best kids that he has met and worked with. That means much from a fellow that has spent that last 30 years seeing the worst society has to offer.

That's a real accomplishment that you'll both treasure for years to come. Hopefully that'll encourage him to keep with it.  :cheersmate:

Definitely.  He's already talking about working toward the next belt. He seems to do well with structures that are set up for levels of achievement.
While I haven't heard him talk about getting a black belt, I will probably start hearing about it after he gets his next belt.

Here's my chance to brag even more about him. :-)

He joined a local Boy Scout troop just less than one year ago. He came in several months later than the other boys, had no prior scout experience, and is already ahead of some of Troop in level. He has his eye on achieving Eagle Scout. He knows that he has to get their one piece at a time.

He also gets good grades. He makes all A's except for B's in Language Arts. The reading part drags him down from an A. I had a similar problem. We can read a novel/story and recount all of the events that took place. The problem is with the flighty, Liberal-artsy questions that they ask. Such as, How did character X FEEL about the way in which character Z FELT when talking to character Y. Like me, his response is, "Why should I care?"  :-)

Back to sports. His favorite sports are basketball and baseball. It's tough to make the school basketball team in this area at the middle school level. If he had not already been spread between scouts (1 nite per week) and Martial Arts (3 nites per week), I would have signed up with a local youth league. He is going to try to make the school baseball team and if that doesn't work he will go into a youth league. However, it will most likely clash with his Martial Arts. So, he will probably have some tough decisions to make.

Not that it shows. You're doing a great job of keeping it tamped down.   :-)

Congrats!

My daughter has been taking Tae Kwon Do for 3 years and is a first degree senior black belt.  Remind your son that a black belt is a white belt that never gave up.

Good for him. A kid needs a hobby or sport to participate in. Kids that are constanly on a cell phone or watching video games or TV need to get their butts out of the house during the day and participate in something other than an idiot electronic box.

He doesn't have a cellphone, per se. His school doesn't allow them to use them. We have an extra one that we use when we are out and about and may have to split up. He does have video games (home and portable) but, homework comes first, he then has either scouts or martial arts all evening expect Thursday. I think that keeps him busy enough.

Back in April, My son achieved his orange belt.

Today, he achieved his green belt.

I don't know if I mentioned it before in this thread but, I am very proud of him.

Typically once you get to red belt the process slows a bit, depending on the school. Brown and black take quite a bit longer, too.  He just needs to hang in there.

Well...My son would have tested for his purple belt today but only showed up for moral support. One month ago today, he had surgery to put a rod in his broken femur. He was more than ready for the purple belt at the time but He broke his leg in PE class the week before Christmas.

He is healing well and may be cleared for athletic activity in a couple of months. He is walking short distances without his walker and only needs his wheelchair at school to get around the duration of the day. He can stand to get into his locker and walk short distances provided that he doesn't put too much weight on his mending leg.

He should be able to get back into it in just enough time to test for his purple belt.

Damn, that sucks.

Take it easy when they take the cast off.  About a week after I had mine taken off, I tried to put some weight on that leg and fell over like a wet noodle.

There was no cast. It is amazing! The surgeon installed a titanium rod from the hip down through the center of the femur and then attached the bone to the rod on both sides of the break. Three incisions and that was it. He does some exercises twice per day. he was told that he can apply as much weight as he cab tolerate. When I was his age, back in the stone age, this would have required a cast from the tip of the toe to above the waist.

Wow, sounds like he broke the hell out of that leg.

But, he's young. Youngsters mend up fast. And best of luck to him in his quest for Purple!
