Members of Congress –mostly male and Republican– sleep in their offices to avoid paying rent
They shower and shave in the morning at the gym. Dinners often are warmed up out of a can. And at night, they bunk down in the same cramped offices where, during the day, they conduct the nation’s business.
For about 50 members of the US Congress, the office doubles as home — at least while they’re in the capital.
With Washington embroiled in a raging debate over taxes and spending as lawmakers and the White House try to avoid plunging over the “fiscal cliffâ€, these members of Congress are living proof that austerity can begin at home.
They reside in their offices because they cannot bear to do anything as wasteful as rent a small apartment or stay in a hotel.

3. I find that to be admirable.
Nothing wrong with being frugal with yourself. It's the miserliness and cruelty towards the needy that I cannot abide.

4. And I'm appalled they can't manage their money any better than that.
They are well paid. They can afford decent living quarters. What does this say about their ability to manage the nation's budget?
This post made me bust out laughing. DUmmies aren't exactly known for their economic skills.

8. Maintaining two households can be expensive
perhaps they want to spend their money on other things like college for the kids or family vacations.

12. And my spouse and I manage one household on less than half what they earn in Congress.
Imagine that.
Your spouse must control the money, otherwise you would be homeless.

5. Every time I see this story I think
They are living in government buildings and I am paying their water, heating and electric bill.
Does anyone of DU have an employer who provides free housing?
Nope DUmmies get their free housing from 0bama.

The American people provide food, housing, utilities, education, healthcare and a pension to democrat welfare slugs.
When do we get labor from our employees?

I guess stupid Anne doesn't keep up on real estate prices. A salary of $174K these days isn't really enough to support two households, especially if one of those households is in Washington, D.C. Plus, real estate prices in Washington, D.C. are going up (unlike the rest of the country) because there's a shortage of available real estate there. Renting an apartment is through the roof (literally).
See, Anne, federal government employees are paid well and they all live in that little liberal island of Northern Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. Because they have the money (courtesy of U.S. taxpayers), they can afford to buy up the real estate there.
I suppose those frugal lawmakers could live in Harry Reid's penthouse suite at the Ritz (or whichever expensive hotel he makes his D.C. residence).
DUmmies are stupid, and they prove it every day, every hour, with their posts.

Government buildings are heated and cooled 24/7 , so their living there adds nothing to the power bills.

I don't think I want anything "produced" by a DUmmy.
They couldn't boil water without screwing it up.

It says that we'd have a balanced budget if these guys ran the government. Too bad those purse strings are still in Pelosi, Reid and Obama's wasteful hands.

Thank you. Beat me to it.
And most government buildings are lit up like an Apollo launch site, 24 hrs a day.

Now, we are expected to believe this?

The Die alte Sau and her husband, both of whom are schoolteachers with scads of seniority, each make less than $44,000 a year?
$174,000 divided by 2 = $87,200.
Schoolteachers with scads of seniority in Kansas City, Missouri, making less than $44,000 per year?
Yeah, yeah, sure, sure.
It sounds like when Ms. Ed, the unappellated eohippus, alleged that as a registered nurse, she made only $24,000 per year.

John Kerry lived with how many people (without paying rent) in between the rich heiress and the rich widow?
D.C. is insanely expensive. I would rather they do this and actually LIVE in the state they are elected from, then spend their entire existence removed from the people they represent.
File this under who gives a shit.

The rawstory is so reliable and unbiased, it must be true. :whatever:
Thank goodness it might not have anything to do with certain "appointments" that were made a year ago when congress critters
were supposedly in recess and couldn't be reached.
I think there's more to it than being austere.

Where do I start?.....OK.....WBT talk radio in Charlotte NC had a black conservative host in the 3 to 6 pm. spot right after Rush. The democrat convention was coming to town so the had to get rid of him. They replaced him with 2 liberal turkeys from the liberal triangle area about a month ahead of the convention.
Now I can start.
The day Jim DeMint announced he was leaving the senate, the 2 liberal talk show host DUmmies were making fun of him and his financial affairs. Seemed as though his tax return showed that he had 2 mortgages totaling 700 thousand and savings in 2 retirement accounts with only 16 thousand in each one. They were laughing and ridiculing Mr. DeMint for being in Washington for 8 years amongst all the graft, bribes and corruption and that was all he had been able to steal for himself.
Just showed me he had been honest and democrats are the crooks that can't stand a person with some scruples.

I lived for a few years rent free in government housing.

And do we even want to talk about the guy who has lived here for the past few years?

I can tell you that his bedroom is much nicer than mine was.

I wouldn't want to live in that apartment April.
Too dang close to an airport. :-)

Man, is Anne stupid, or what?
I rowed over and was struck by how shallow and petty and inconsequential the thread was. The inmates should be scheduled for more occupational and/or shock therapy.

Anne Pritchett excels at being shallow, petty, and inconsequential.

Don't know about Mr. Ed, but if Ms. Ed was paid according to performance, I'm positive she's currently being grossly overpaid.

Tell me about it! On duty nights one had to sleep in medical. Directly under the flight deck. Never made much sense to me to put the people that needed rest and recovery right in the noisiest part of the ship.

You also live in a red state, whereas blue DC and Maryland are expensive.

I must admit, I'm impressed by the fly-in garage underneath.
Saves time waiting for the stupid valet.

You mean, of course, the Die alte Sau and her husband, not the chief dick-inspector and her "partner" of Skins's island.
But considering both pairs, if there's a teacher in a big blue city making less than $44,000 a year, or a registered nurse down in Texas making only $24,000--unless a nun, and it's a pretty sure thing neither one of these are nuns--I'll eat my hat.

They try to live within their means. What's the problem with that? :???: :mental:
