A good time to recall: Molly Ivins on Hillary Clinton.

Molly Ivins: Not. backing. Hillary.

Friday, January 20, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas (Creators Syndicate) -- I'd like to make it clear to the people who run the Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for president.

Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone This is not a Dick Morris election. Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges.

The recent death of Gene McCarthy reminded me of a lesson I spent a long, long time unlearning, so now I have to re-learn it. It's about political courage and heroes, and when a country is desperate for leadership. There are times when regular politics will not do, and this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of bull that only the truth can provide relief. . .

I miss Molly. She saw right through Hillary Clinton, and as this comes to an end, it's a nice time to remember and respect her wisdom.

8. She almost killed me, a couple of times.

Should you somehow encounter her in the Hereafter, let me give you some hard-earned words of advice...

Never, ever, go out drinking with that woman.

If I had time, today, I would tell you a great story or two.

Maybe you could PM a reminder to me.

Some things are difficult to share in a public forum.

But for you, Skidmore....

2. Great job, Don. KnR

As one who has lived through both eras(I was actually held for Court Martial because of something I said during Watergate), I really enjoyed reading that editorial.

McClellan Book Confirms Bushies Both 'Worse Than' and 'Not As Good As,' Watergate   Updated at 10:05 PM

It hardly took the recent Scott McClellan book to confirm the verdict of Watergate emeritus John Dean that the current crop of Neo-Con Cosa Nostras in the Bush administration is far worse than the Nixon Mafioso. But this view tells only part of the story.

No, I’m not talking about the world-class competition between the two Administrations for violating constitutional, international and moral norms. Indeed, my own sense of history and constitutional law persuades me that Dean’s aptly named book about the Bush gang, Worse Than Watergate, is unquestionably accurate.

Instead, my only quibble with Dean’s neat alliterative title is that it doesn’t take into account the drama, pageantry and mythic proportions of Watergate that I perceive, through my nostalgic-colored glasses, as sadly missing in the Bushian banana republic.

I guess what I’m driving at is, Tuesdays have no feel, and neither does the current Constitutional crisis.

The contrasts are both stark, and too numerous to exhaustively list....

4. Gosh, Don...

Thank you.

I got court-martialed because I had been in the States on leave and was regaling my buddies with the latest craziness that was coming out of the Watergate fiasco.

That was the point when an asshole Lifer walked up to me and said, "Look, sailor, Mr. Nixon is my Commander-in-Chief and I will follow him through the Gates of Hell if he needs me."

I told him that I certainly hoped he would get the opportunity to do just that, real soon.

BAM!!!

Air Force Unit's Nuclear Weapons Security Is 'Unacceptable'

Source: Washington Post

By Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 31, 2008; Page A03

The same Air Force unit at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota that was responsible for mishandling six nuclear cruise missiles last August failed key parts of a nuclear safety inspection this past weekend, according to a Defense Department report.

The 5th Bomb Wing was given an "unacceptable" grade in security of nuclear weapons, according to the review by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. In another category, management and administration, it received a grade of "marginal," based on deficiencies in recording changes that affected the operational status of nuclear cruise missiles and gravity bombs.

Those are two areas where failures last summer allowed a B-52 at Minot to be loaded with six air-launched cruise missiles and flown to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana without the pilots, air or ground crews knowing they contained nuclear warheads.

Among the problems found during last week's inspection: Internal security forces did not go to assigned defensive areas during an exercise that involved an attempt to steal a nuclear weapon; security guards failed to search an emergency vehicle that entered and left the nuclear storage area during that exercise; a security guard used his cellphone to play video games while on duty; and guards were unarmed at traffic control points along the route where nuclear weapons were to travel.

8. Don't hold your breath.

There are quite a few folks here on DU who have been involved in the handling/security of tactical nukes. And not a single one of us has a clue as to how it happened, other than the word came from the highest level at DoD or White House. The fact that six nukes flew around like that (with only the slightest mention by MSM) is very disturbing, to say the least.
