I would support a national registry for all mental health patients
A persons name would be in the national registry if a licensed psychiatrist deemed that person unfit to own a firearm...
There would be an appeals process for people on the national list banning them from purchasing a firearm.

6. An absolutely terrible idea
It literally gave me flashes of the Third Reich, as well as people put on the registry for things like being gay and black.
You do realize that sociopaths aren't mentally ill, and wouldn't be on that registry? Right?
Hitler outlawed guns. What is it that DUmmies want to do again?

I read something on the interwebs a while back.
Had something to do about courage of your convictions or some such, or maybe it mentioned something about asylums for thee but not for me.
I don't know, maybe I'm wrong about that.

This reply is in the campfire, I thought it was interesting so I towed it over.

12. Asinine. Instead I support a national registry for all gun owners.

With a licensed psychiatrist evaluating the circumstances and background of each and every person who wants to own a gun. And a mandated inventory of each gun owned. And a new eval, or an update of the previous eval, for each gun purchased. Edit to add: All costs to be borne by the person who wishes to be licensed and registered to own the firearm.
Don't look at me, I don't have a problem...

Got news for you DUmbshit: it already exists. Question #11f on BATF Form 4473 (http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-4473-1.pdf) asks:
"Have you ever been adjudicated mentally defective (which includes a determination by a court, board, commission or other lawful authority that you are a danger to yourself or to others or that you are incompetent to manage your own affairs) OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?"
IN other words, if at any time in your life, a court has been asked to declare you, well, the typical DUmmy, you are forevermore banned from so much as simple possession of a firearm of any kind. Oh, and the records of such adjudications are available to the NICS system: if the background check turns even one up, DING! no gun for you. (By the way: this is why the Dear Leader Regime is going gangbusters on their efforts to get Desert Storm/OEF/OIF vets to come forward for "treatment" of their PTSD. It counts as an adjudication of mentally defective, according to them.)
So, DUmmy, knowing that your grand idea has been in place for at least 25 years, how'd that work out in Connecticut last week?
-
You can hear the goostepping all they way acroos the internet with each keystroke they make. Next thing you know their Dear leader will be asking them to make up his new citizen corp or whatever it was he was asking for so they can come to get us and our guns.

If we're going to have national ID check that includes a database on people with restraining orders and convictions because those disqualify a purchaser, then yes, we probably should have one for diagnosed mental pathologies too. It wouldn't have changed a damned thing in CT, of course, since Lanza did not buy or register to himself the firearms he used.

Not just yes but HELL YES! Most of the DUmp readily admits that they are mentally ill, on drugs, or both.
