Coyotes and a BB gun - I need advice

I haven't had any problems yet. The coyotes generally stay out back in the woods, well away from the house. I don't want to kill them, just scare them away from the yard if they get bolder. I have some vague notions about rock salt. Anyone have any advice for something that will sting but not cause permanent problems for the beast?

1. Neighborhood dogs (large) seem to be doing the trick for us...

While I see one come through the neighborhood at night--heading into the open space fields on either side, they don't linger--even though the bushes and under-deck areas of these houses are sanctuaries for wild rabbits and we are nearly overrun with them. But when I hear the neighbor's lab or the large mixed breed on the other side bark at night, I inevitably see a coyote pick up the pace to run through.

Of course little dogs and cats allowed outside are another story....

I'm glad you are looking for a non-lethal solution, though.

3. Where I am, the coyotes kill dogs regardless of size unless the cougars get to them first

2. A paintball gun solved my problem with neighborhood dogs crapping in my yard. Worth a try.

5. IMO piss is the best defense. Have a beer party and piss all over the place you don't want them

It worked on coyotes and wolves in N. TX

I'm not certain that will work against coyotes primitive, but I suspect if your property reeks of urine, it will certainly keep decent and civilized people away.

I would think all the cannabis in their piss would attract critters.  :-)

The best thing is to tie a steak around your neck and lay in the bushes to draw them in and when they get close jump up an scare them! You will never have to worry about them again.

Where I live, there aren't coyotes and other predators threatening me outside my home
Where I live, people are calm, they don't worry about being attacked when they go in public.

Where I live people aren't invaded in their homes, their cars aren't hijacked, they pretty much don't lock the doors

Where I live guns aren't part of everyday life. Where I live crime isn't causing me angst every day.

Where I live no one carries guns. The yahoos wear camo to go shopping, but people snicker when they see them.

I understand if you live in a place where any of these forces are in play and a gun is necessary.

What I don't understand is why guns take over your lives and you find it necessary to spread your paranoia to me and mine.

Mourn the victims, hug your children, have a peaceful Sunday.

If the primitive doesn't want to kill them, I'll come and kill them onthe cheap.  I hate coyotes.

Even went night hunting for them once.  A friend and I, encouraged by our good buddy Al, did anyway.  The trip ended with us laying in a ditch on one side of the road and a bunch of coyotes wondering where the fresh kill was on the other side.

Dig a deep hole out in the yard and shovel about 6 inches of ashes into the hole.  Spread peas liberally around the top of the hole--I've had good luck with the Green Giant brand.  Then hide and wait and when the coyote sneaks up to take a pea, you rush up and kick him in the ash hole.

No dummie. What ya do is feed the poor little things. The only reason they are down around your place is cause they are hungry. Feed them and make pets out of them. I suggest Alpo and some hand feeding.

Unless those large dogs breed with coyotes, then the coy dog offspring can be worse than the coyotes.

Don't mess around with today's break barrel pellet guns. Mine will a put a pellet through 1/2 inch CDX, 1/16 alum sheet, and 1/4 inch PVC at 50 feet. As a tween, I used a .22 to scare off coyotes, I think these would scare one off. Only problem is that rate of fire is about 3 a minute in daylight.

When I was a kid we had Red Ryder BB guns, but souped them up. Out of the box, they were really weak shooters, just half-assed toys.

A couple of friends and I discovered that oil would change all that.

We would squirt motor oil down the barrel until it was oozing out all over the place, let it percolate for a while, then dry fire the gun until just a fine mist of oil came out.

The BB velocity would be at least triple what it was before supercharging. You could shoot through both sides of a tin can, where before the BB would bounce off. Sparrows, starlings, even pigeons paid the price.

I guess the oil caused some rubber seals to swell and contain air pressure better, but don't know for sure. We never tore one down to see how they work.

But I never heard of anyone shooting their eye out.

I recently bought a Gamo breakdown pellet gun, and its power and accuracy are really impressive. No more squirrels on the bird feeder.

Mine is a Beeman but I think all of them are made in the same factory in China. They all look 99% the same on the exterior. The 1% being the different name tags.

Eyes go in, not out.  :o  My Uncle was playing with his buddies, after Christmas.  Dumbass friend of his thought it would be cool to shoot at the train running behind the house, danged if that BB didn't smack my uncle in his eye.  Had to get a glass one, I guess he was somewhere around 10 or so.

I rescued his box of glass eyeballs when I came down to clean up what I could after Katrina.  What in the world does someone do with a box of glass eyeballs?  Though, they really aren't eye "balls" anyway.

When I was a child in south Georgia robins weren't viewed by the country folks around here as being songbirds. They were viewed as potential dinner.

Doves are as numerous as they used to be, but i do see more hawks circling in the skies.  Never saw hawks here in the 70's, just farther down in southern Illinois.
