Bit by a rat? Bit by a damned RAT?
Whilst taking out the garbage, which around here involves buying special yellow town bags, filling them and hauling them to the town dump, I noticed a heavily breathing brownish hairball in the milk crate/filing thingie on the back porch I threw some scraps into the night before.

Turns out it's a rat who, while heading for the bag of tasty potato peels or squash leavings in there, got caught in one of the round holes in the side of the crate. Seems his head and shoulders made it, but his fat ass couldn't get through.

Now, I have no great affection for rats, even though this was a cute country rat and not one of the fearsome Norway rats found in NYC subways and tenements. Should this rat have met its fate at the claws of one of the local barn owls, I would not have flinched or shed a tear. But, accidentally caught in this contrivance of which it had no natural knowledge did not seem a proper fate even for a rat.

So I freed it. Which meant cutting through the soft plastic while trying not to cut through the rat. Needless to say, the rat was not amused and kicked up a fuss. Having absolutely no appreciation for my attempt to free it to become owl food, it managed to bite the tip of my finger. A tiny bite, and a tiny bit of blood.

Being human myself, and not a rat, I continued freeing the ungrateful critter and managed to get it into a large plastic container. When I got to my vet's office and put the Tupperware on the counter there was the expected amusement. I think they were disappointed it wasn't a new patient.

But, they assured me there are no known cases of anyone getting a disease from a rat bite in these parts. The rat is now somewhere in the woods looking for its usual food, or looking out for an owl.

Because any warm-blooded mammal can have it and spread it.

I got bit by a wild mouse when I was 12, and the state or county health department had to make certain it wasn't a rabies carrier. Good thing I caught it. Otherwise I would have faced those painful abdominal injections, just in case. Rabies isn't something to mess with

and big ones, like beavers, only rarely. Anyway, doctors and vets don't worry about it.

It seems that raccoons, the worst carriers, have been successfully inoculated and were never much of a problem out on the east end of the island anyway. (rabies, that is, raccoons have always been a pain in the ass around here)

It was kind of you to free the rat, nasty as it was to you.

I found that they had been chewing through the the refrigerator cord. Maybe another week or two and it would have been fried mouse with a possible side of house fire.

And the greedy little buggers don't even bring their own beer!

Good goobly-goo.

These people need to clean up their houses, or get some traps.

When we lived in "the van down by the river" (mobile home of a friend of my wife's family knows who let us live there rent free while we got this house built), we had a rat problem. We found they were climbing up the dryer vent hole, so I got a new vent hose, put it on, and voila, no more rat problem.

The mobile home was always clean, with the wife being OCD and all.

I see a rat, and we get some really big river rats around here, said rat's life expectancy has dropped to zero.

I hate rats. I kill them anyway I can as fast as I can. Shovel, poison, shotgun, traps, pistol, weed-eater whatever. It don't matter. I see one, it's gonna get dead real quick.

You are a complete dumbass, dummie. Next we will be hearing about how you have to have all kinds of medical treatment due to the rat bite and can't work and have to go on disability.  :thatsright:

Rats have not yet transmitted rabies to humans in the US, but a small number do carry rabies.  The vet should have tested the rat.

Stupid DUmmies.....all that for a frigging rat.

Just as bad here. Thursday a deer was hit on the north end of main street near the Wells-Fargo bank. It was all broken up but still alive. A fellow was going to shoot it but a DUmmie stopped him claiming she would have him charged with animal cruelty. He was told that only a cop could shoot the deer, so they called the city cops. Cop showed up and said he wasn't allowed to do that and they would have to call a vet to have it put down humanly.......1 hour and 2 shots(needles) later at an unknown cost to taxpayers, the deer was dead.......sheeeesh.

mod. to change was to wasn't

You fall asleep in class or something? Rodents don't carry plague. Their fleas do.

Figured your type should know all about parasites.

Sounds like the hyenas in Iraq.  They put out traps for them, and when they caught one they transported it to the vet to be euthanized at taxpayer expense.  We worked out that the total cost of the trapping and euthanization was about $650 per animal.

Hey DUmmy -

You know what kind of rats don't bite ? - Dead ones. You should have smacked that rodent on the noggin and put him out of his misery, then unceremoniously cut the carcass free and dumped it in the trash.

Rats, mice, possums, 'coons, groundhogs, doesn't matter.  I consider them all trespassers, and dispatch them with whatever I have handy.  Just killed 3 possums in the last week, 1 with a .22 to the head, the other 2 were beaten to death, one with a shovel, the other with a 15 inch Craftsman adjustable wrench.

Seems like we are having more of a varrmit problem this year than previous years.  Usually, I kill 3-4 possums a year, 2-3 groundhogs, and my mouse traps in the house nab about 5, usually in the pantry.  So far this year, 9 possums, 7 groundhogs, a RABID 'coon, and at least 12 mice.

The only explanation I can come up with is:  they are reincarnated Obama voters.   :lmao:

Why didn't he just get a stick and push him through the hole?

Why didn't he just kill the damned filthy thing in the first place.  It's not like it's an endangered species.   :hammer:

STOOPID, F'N DUMMIES!  You KILL your own babies, YOUR OWN FLESH AND BLOOD, which genetically is 1/2 of YOU, yet you WON'T KILL A F'N, DISEASE CARRYING, PROPERTY DESTROYING RAT!

You people are F'CKED in the head, severely!   :hammer:

What more proof do we need to prove liberalism is a mental disease?

Mouse invasion?  :rotf:

The only time a mouse got inside my parent's house is when a cat found it before the mouse found the trap.  One of the cat's would kill it and then place it in the toilet.  That happened once or twice a year.  After I moved to Phoenix, my cat found a lizard and killed it and left it in front of the toilet for me.  Then when we move to Las Vegas, my black cat killed a scorpion and left it in the middle of the living room.  I thought it was alive and freaked out and wouldn't go anywhere near it.

When you have been bitten by ANY animal, at minimum you need a tetanus shot.  To just say "Rats don't carry rabies" and let it go was insane.  When my HOUSE cat bit my kid and then died a day later, we had to send it in for rabies tests, and he'd not only been inoculated, he was never outdoors.  Only an idiot would get bitten by a rat and then just let it go.

OH, yeah, it was a DUmp story, wasn't it?   :thatsright:  The idiot part was pretty obvious.   :lmao:

Antibiotics should be considered as well, any animal can carry nasty germs in their mouth.

Nice. Back when I lived in OH, my dad's brother's son (my cousin) had a blow gun he used to nail one to the side of his garage wall.

Once upon a time, we had a mouse problem.  After our little terrier mix Dominic dispatched nine of them to the Big Wheel of Cheese in the Sky, they must have gotten the word because only one came around, and that years later.  He was a clever little sucker, evading traps and dogs' jaws, but hubby finally nailed him with some poison.  We have to be careful about laying down poison because of the huge koi pond that takes up at least one sixth of the backyard.
Pigeons, rabbits, squirrels, rodents of any sort do not fare well in our home.  If the dogs don't get them, one of the roaming cats in the neighborhood (not mine ast they are all indoor) will kill them off.  We have rescued some baby rabbits from the jaws of our dogs; I like rabbits and unlike the rest of the critters, they are cute.

I can't believe this guy took a ****ing rat to the vet.  Wonder what the vet thought.  Probably that this was the sucker that was born that particular minute. :rotf:

When I was up at deer camp last Saturday, one of the guys mentioned that he hadn't seen too many small rodents around this season.  Then the reason poked its head out of the woodpile--an ermine.  Said ermine then blitzed to a position under the porch.

No mice around the camp this year.
