Snyder, GOP leaders unveil right-to-work legislation; protesters flood Michigan Capitol

Gov. Rick Snyder said he is prepared to sign legislation that would make Michigan the nation’s 24th right-to-work state when the bills get to his desk.

During a news conference today in the state’s Capitol, Snyder said the Legislature will proceed with right-to-work legislation for public and private employees — which would exclude police and firefighters — and that the bills could be introduced today during the lame-duck session.

“The goal isn’t to divide Michigan. It is to bring Michigan together,” the governor said, as hundreds of union protesters stormed the Capitol and the governor’s office, vociferously voicing their opposition to the plan.

It would all be illegal.

Snyder has been a snake in the grass all along, and too few of the idiots in this state understood that. Including the media, with all their "oh he said he wouldn't sign any right to work legislation!" **** them, all of them. This was made possible, most recently, by the failure of Proposal 2 to put collective bargaining rights into the state constitution.

People voted no, saying it wasn't necessary to put them into the constitution because they weren't under attack. From now on my first question dealing with people here will be, "How did you vote on 2," and I'll treat them accordingly after that.

It's payback for your attempt to change the MI Constitution with Prop 2. It would have thrown out 170 existing laws to give unions unlimited power.

You lost. Get over it.

Anti right-to-work protesters arrested in Michigan Capitol

LANSING, MI - About a half dozen people who were protesting against right-to-work legislation were arrested outside the Senate chamber shortly after 12 p.m. today.

The protesters, who are among an estimated 3,000 union members and others demonstrating against right-to-work bills at the Capitol, were arrested for impeding the flow of pedestrian traffic, said Michigan State Police Inspector Gene Adamczyk.

He said the protesters were trying to push their way into the Senate chamber and laid down in a common walk way. They were asked to move and did not, he said.

-snip-

Union members and others in the Senate gallery applauded and cheered for those who were arrested as they were brought through the Senate floor.

Just remember that your attempted recall of Snyder failed. The Governor, Senate and House is firmly under Republican control.

You can still belong to a union if you wat to are dumb enough. If unions were such a good deal this wouldn't be a threat.

So what are they protesting?

The 2010 groundswell of conservatism continues under the static noise of a general election loss.  This is indeed good news and should serve as a warning of things to come in 2014.  The sad thing is once the unions in MI are neutralized, the very scum that are currently holding the various municipalities hostage will enjoy prosperity they did not earn nor deserve.

Michigan GOP approves right to work amid union protests

<snippet>

Quote
LANSING, Mich. — Republicans slammed right-to-work legislation through the Michigan House and Senate Thursday, drawing raucous protests from throngs of stunned union supporters, whose outnumbered Democratic allies were powerless to stop it.

Just hours after they were introduced, both chambers approved measures prohibiting private unions from requiring that nonunion employees pay fees. The Senate quickly followed by voting to impose the same requirement on most public unions.

Although rumors had circulated for weeks that right-to-work measures might surface during the session's waning days, the speed with which the GOP-dominated Legislature acted Thursday caught many onlookers by surprise. Details of the bills weren't made publicly available until they were read aloud on both floors as debate began.

The chaos drew raucous protests from hundreds of union supporters, some of whom were pepper-sprayed by police when they tried to storm the Senate chamber.

Because of rules requiring a five-day delay between votes in the two chambers on the same legislation, final enactment could not take place until Tuesday at the earliest. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who previously had said repeatedly that right-to-work was "not on my agenda," told reporters Thursday he would sign the measures.

Democrats denounced the bills as an attack on worker rights, but the GOP sponsor insisted they would boost the economy and jobs. A House vote on public-sector unions was expected to come later.

18. Actual union corruption hasn't helped
The two biggest articulated resistances to unions I've encountered are:
1) Corruption
2) Seniority rules

I think a third that doesn't get mentioned is that unions are seen as sticking up for union workers at the expense of non-union workers. (See the whole flap about the non-IBEW linemen allegedly kept off the line after Sandy.) Working America is a start, but there's still a lot of outreach to do.

On a larger point, if you want to see our side's version of the right's general echo chamber/bubble mentality, talk to other liberals about labor unions. I have seen on this board stuff like "I literally can't imagine a worker not wanting to be in a union." Yeah, you probably cant, which is the problem...

There were just loads of ads for the collective bargaining amendment, starring nurses, teachers, firefighters, police, factory workers. We showed this state the vast swath of people who benefit from union rights, but they still looked at these everyday heroes and went to the polls and voted a solid "**** you."

With Super-PACs from around the country kicking in enormous funds to stop Prop 2, total advertising spending over the initiative could easily top $30 million.  Some experts on a panel commissioned by the MIRS estimate it could go as high as $40 or $50 million

I can't find it but the final figure was 60 million by pro labor groups.

One of the proposals that was defeated would have defined a person who is taking care of any family member that is collecting any sort of state or federal benefits as a unionized health care provider, subjecting them to union dues.

SO, we're standing around with our beers, and someone mentioned the union.  It all then came gushing out, the hatred and contempt for the UPIU (united paperworkers Int'l union).  They sucked the wages out of the paychecks, and gave nothing back.  Defended the deadwood and drunks, and ignored legitimate complaints.

So Wasp, I never did punch anyone in the nuts.   :-)  I just stood and listened politely.

In a related story, Omaha Steve Dawes was taken into custody at the Cornhusker Road overpass on US Hwy 75 this morning, on a charge of Obstructing Traffic.

In an exclusive interview, Bellevue Police Captain Mark Elbert said, "It appears Mr. Dawes was trying to commit suicide, but couldn't hoist his fat (expletive deleted) over the guardrail." According to Elbert, Dawes has been unable to make a statement to police, as he hasn't stopped crying since being taken into custody. "We have only been able to distinguish a few words. Mostly he sobs 'Why, why?' over and over again."

Stay tuned for updates on this story.

Right-to-work legislation in Michigan: Thousands could mass for rallies at Capitol - Numbers needed!

Right-to-work legislation in Michigan: Thousands could mass for rallies at Capitol
By Paul Egan
Detroit Free Press Lansing Bureau

LANSING -- Unions spent Friday organizing civil disobedience training and staffing phone banks to urge members to be at the Capitol on Tuesday for what could be one of the largest demonstrations the state's seat of government has seen in decades.

Backers and opponents of a right-to-work law in Michigan said they are planning to show their strength -- predictions of 7,000 demonstrators or more, including hundreds from other states -- as the Legislature prepares to complete its fast-track consideration of a package of bills that would make the lightning-rod issue the law.

• RELATED: Michigan House passes right-to-work legislation after Democrats walk out to protest closed Capitol

Gov. Rick Snyder already has said he will sign the bills when they hit his desk, possibly Tuesday.

What happens in Michigan, considered the birthplace of the American organized labor movement, is being watched across the country and could prove to be a litmus test of sorts for unions and their once Teflon influence.

"On a scale of one to 10, this is an 11," said former U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, now business development representative with the Michigan Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust.

"This is a direct affront to organized labor and its members. It's a game-changer."
