I honestly don't see how the Phils are going to blow it this year little bro. They are walking away with the NL pennant my friend....... only to be beat by the Red Sox, but they are going to the dance.

Nah, the Phils are taking it. They are prone to choking, but I just don't see it this year.

Starting Pitching.
But, as long as the Phils score 10-15 runs a game, they should win a few of them. :-)
Nah, the Phils are taking it. They are prone to choking, but I just don't see it this year.
a quick glance at the standings indicates that the phils are up .5 games on the fish, 3.5 on the braves, and 4 on the mets. with over 100 games to be played. hell, you're right. cancel the season, and lets start the playoffs! :whatever: :-)
Who's your little bro?

By all means, we'll talk again in September. My thread was a shout out to Red, who is a die hard Phils fan, that I think from what I have seen from them thus far that they will get over the choke bump in the road this year.
Just a hunch, but I doubt I will be wrong.
No way, formerlurker. D'backs own it this year.

I'll call the AL right now -- the Red Sox. I would have done that back in April too.
Diamonbacks? yawn. Dodgers? giggle. Mets? come on, NY teams I live to watch choke. I hope they go neck and neck with the Phils to the end, only to choke. So to that end - Go Mets!
That said, I don't see the Phils choking this year, and I waited to June to make the comment. Of course there is a lot of baseball to go, but they'll be standing at the end getting their dance card punched.
Really makes no difference who wins though as the AL team will beat the best of your lot regardless.

So many Jr. Nostradamases calling for our downfall. And the wins just keep coming.  I love the proof being in the pudding.
The Phils do have enough starting pitching to win, if it stays healthy. In spite of what he's shown in the first few weeks, Myers CAN pitch worth a damn, as he's shown in his last two starts which he lost thanks to no run support. Hamels is money in the bank, Jamie Moyer's arm hasn't fallen off in twenty years, and even Eaton is pitching well, wonders never cease 'n all. The bullpen has been outstanding and really, that's been all the difference in the world with our team.
But everyone knows major leaguers get paid for what they do post All-Star break. So tell me, how have the Phils fared post All-Star break the past couple years?
Oh, kids?
ANGELS 38-24
RED SOX 38-26
PHILLIES 37-26
I'd bitchslap ya both, but Seattle already did it to the Sox last night, and looking up at the Cubs EVER should be embarassment enough.

Hardly as the Sox have the same record one, and two -- we have injuries presently coupled with the brawl the night before equates to the give away to the Mariners yesterday.
Angels will do nothing yet once again this year, and look at that - EVERYONE is beating the Yankees so y'all don't even have that to pound your chest over this year.
Oh, and how is Dice-K doing Sparky?

The Skanks had another walk-off win today. 'Course, it was against KC, but KC was up 5-1 and 10-6.
Also, let's remember something--the season is 162 games long, not 60-something.
This is going to be an extra special June this year. We get both the Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Califoria of Los Angeles in Citizens Bank Park during interleague play. Back to back. That'll be two big names for our kill board. I'm game for any wagers ya'll want to suggest. :cheersmate:
Red Sox 1st place. Angels eliminated in first round of the playoffs, sweep. Yankees suck.
Carry on.

Oh, and how is Dice-K doing Sparky?
I heard he might be back in the lineup next week.
No matter, he'll tank in the second half of the season just like he did last year. You're pinning your hopes to a pitcher whose ERA in September and October was almost EIGHT.
That's right, EIGHT. Look it up RIGHT HERE (http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/historical/player_stats.jsp?c_id=mlb&baseballScope=AL&subScope=teamCode&teamPosCode=BOS&statType=2&sitSplit=9&venueID=&timeSubFrame2=1&timeFrame=1&timeSubFrame=2007&Submit=Submit).
And if you think you're going to go far with a nearly Atlanta-esque shit road record, think again. You've yet to hit your All-Star slump that you hit each and every year.
Oh, it's gonna be fun to watch, I can tell you that much.
And finally, Bartolo Colon? Sucks ass. I could have told you that. But no, you had to spend bucks to find out. You would have thought Theo the Excel Queen would have figured that out after Gagne, Donnelly, and J.C. Romero were complete busts, but nahhhhh...
Tell me how good your team is when Manny goes headcase on you again and you don't have "Big Sloppy" to back your ass up.
Now you wanna talk sweep?
Hey, if I got over six runs a game of support, I'D be 8-0. Bartolo isn't looking all that hot for 4-1, and frankly, who else do you have? Sure, Okajima has a decent ERA, when he isn't giving up Grand Slams to guys batting below the Mendoza line.
Face it--your bullpen sucks, and Papelbon isn't the dominant closer he was. K-Rod, OTOH...
Yeah, at the end of the day, who would you rather have?
Then again, who would you rather have NOW?
Colon, or Lackey?
Okajima, or Scott Shields?
Lester, or Ervin Santana?
Wakefield, or Saunders?
Bucholtz, or Garland?
I think I've made my point.
I think you better look again. Our first-place lead is bigger than your first-place lead. Yours is what, 1 1/2 games? Call me when you hit 5 games up. It won't happen, mind you, but you can dream.
Oh, and who has the better record again? Say it with me, everyone--ANGELS. That's right--ANGELS.
And nice game last night against the Reds. First time you face the Reds in over 30 years and they picked up bitch-slapping ya right where they left off in the '75 WS. Nevermind it's against a last place team, you got punked by a guy who came in with a 2-9 record. How do you even speak when you just got thouroughly OWNED like that? Oh, and whatcha gonna do now that Manny is out?
Yep--that Atlanta-esque road record is gonna not just bite you IN the ass, it's gonna tear that bad boy right off.
And finally, get off the Dice-K wagon already. It's just gonna look that much worse when that train wreck happens, and you know damned well it will. Like I said, do a month-by-month breakdown of his ERA, and you're gonna see that the longer the season goes on, the worse he's gonna get. He won't be a .500 pitcher during the second half, and don't even try to tell me otherwise.
And chokemeister? K-Rod? Does your boy have 4 consecutive 40-save seasons? Is your boy 27 for 28 in save ops? I think your boy chewed the baseball himself and is too embarassed to admit it.

Y'all know that we already had this discussion on K-rod last season. He, like A-fraud, SUCK in the playoffs. So I would even take Rivera over your boy k-rod anyday.
Yeah, every so often our lineup makes chumps look like Cy Young contenders. It happens. Already over it.
We have more wins than the Angels. Say that with me -- MORE WINS. We are in first place in the AL. That is how it works.
You have absolutely nothing to gage Dice-K by other than his first year here. He is doing extremely well, and I have no doubt will continue to do so. Face it, you got nothing.
Angels win last night? Ooh, my bad -- no they didn't. Of course they didn't. Big talk on our home games when the Angels are just about even on home play -- but heck, when LA is chuck full of whatever-way-the-wind blows for fans I guess home park advantage means very little.
Would you look at that JD Drew has a double and triple today..... another cast off from the land of la-la that seems to fit into life in Boston just fine.

I truly think that we are better than our record indicates, and I think that the dodgers will contend.
but there is no excuse for the way they have been playing lately. I have been brutally honest in my baseball thread.

Oh, goody--the "we're better than our record" indicates, but you're still sub-.500.
Well, look at it this way--at least you're not a certain football team who went 16-0 only to choke the "greatest team ever" title away in the last TWO MINUTES OF THE SUPER BOWL TO A 6-SEED WILD CARD TEAM.
Oh wait--LA doesn't have a football team anymore. You wouldn't understand that reference, given what few football fans in the LA Basin are Rai-DUH fans.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.
Oh my, would ya LOOKY HERE????
Who has LOST two straight?
Who has WON two straight?
Who looks like an inbred ESPN commentator? Dah...SOX! Dah...Phillies! Dah...West Coast who?
Yeah, come on...bring it on.
Oh, here's a headline for ya hon...try not to well up with tears when you're reading it:
Cards power up, poised for sweep
The actual link on MLB.COM was something like....
CARDS ROLL DICE-K, POSED FOR SWEEP
At Fenway, no less. Hang your head and admit your shame.
And Red...seriously? Giving up a jack to ERICK AYBAR?
ERICK AYBAR?
A shortstop? Oh man, this is gonna leave a mark. And in YOUR crib, no less.
Both of ya'll can just curl up and mutter to yourselves for a while now. Really--just lie down and be still, because any retort you might come up with is just gonna get met with a severe beatdown.
Well, look at it this way--at least you're not a certain football team who went 16-0 only to choke the "greatest team ever" title away in the last TWO MINUTES OF THE SUPER BOWL TO A 6-SEED WILD CARD TEAM.
Oh, trust me--as much as it pains me to admit it, Boston has the best major sports franchises going right now between the Pats, Celts, and Sox.
Yes Jules, I said it. But that doesn't mean I'm going down quietly. And we've 1--still got a better record, 2--taken you 2 out of 3 in your crib so far this year.

But, you said:QuoteThis is going to be an extra special June this year. We get both the Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Califoria of Los Angeles in Citizens Bank Park during interleague play. Back to back. That'll be two big names for our kill board.
All that happened is that the Red Sox and Angels added the Phillies to their "kill board." If the Mets could hit worth a lick, they would have made up a few more of those games. I didn't say that the Mets were going out to the Angels and were going to take two of three from them in their park, or that the Mets would take two of three from the Rox. But, it happened. What also happened is that the Mets' bats went silent against the Mariners. (Seeing that Dan Giese and Darrell Rasner are pitching the day/night split doubleheader tomorrow, the Mets stand a good chance of taking that DH.)
The Phillthies are going to panic, and overpay for someone. Probably someone that they can get on the cheap, like Greg Maddux. The Mets probably will overpay for someone to replace Carlos Delgado, and soon. Ollie Perez could wind up somewhere else soon (Texas?), but he'll bring back someone mid-tier.
Replace that bag of popcorn with some crow and you'll be just about right.
I'm sorry, whose bullpen would you take over yours again?
Thanks for playing my little SECOND PLACE RED SOX.
C'mon, this surprises you that Manny can only pick on the elderly? Guy's been a headcase ever since he was with the Indians.
Damn, what a difference a couple of days makes. You're falling farther and farther behind, the Philthies are barely hanging on to their spot, and the "sucky" Angels?
Just extended their lead in the West to 4.5 games.
Sucks for you two.
How sweet it is indeed. See ya on the 18th, toots.

Seriously, I don't know what Pat Gillick is waiting for. He better get on the phone and sign us a pimpin' starting pitcher. He's not gonna be our GM next year... what does he care how much it costs? When's there gonna be a better time to take a stab at glory? What's the future we're building for? We've got one of the best teams we've ever had hitting their prime now. We need to land a big fish now, and take our best shot now. Don't be the Eagles, Gillick! Don't waste the best years of our best players! Pleeeeeeease! Yes, I am BEGGING! We need this, Pat. We need something to hold onto for the next twenty-five years. Don't do us like that, man!
:-)
You want to go to that card? I mean, since you won't admit your pitching staff sucks, we'll go with managers?
Who would you rather have--Scioscia or Tito?
Oh, and how's life treating you when you're looking UP AT THE RAYS, FALLING FARTHER AND FARTHER BACK???
Say it with me now...FOUR GAMES BACK. FOUR GAMES BACK.
See, don't you feel better? I certainly do.
Ya gotta keep these people in their place. I mean, when they're not RUNNING smack, they're smacking each other with baseball bats or running each other over in bar parking lots.

harsh, dude. :-)
.....and yet they still have the same amount of wins as the la-la-loser Angels, and they still are at the top of the MLB. HAHAHAHAHA. No worries they will reclaim the AL East soon.
Tack Atlanta to our kill board for the 2nd time this year. Right next to the 1st place, Cinderella story ( :lmao: ) Marlins. Yay for us, but I can't wait to get the Mets again. :hammer:

How'd that turn out this time, Red? The Mets are 7-3 v. the Phillthies this year. 2-1 at Shea, and now 5-2 at CBP, winning all three series. And Adam Eaton being the Mets-killer got turned on him (finally). If I were you, I'd be saying something to JRol about "we're gonna win 100 games this year." You'd have to only lose 21 the rest of the way . . . and that ain't gonna happen.
Mets win the division the last week of the season.
The Mets have three pitchers whose name stands out on the "probable starters" chart: Santana, John Maine and, even now, Pedro Martinez. The Brewers have Sabathia to go with Ben Sheets. Even with Tom Glavine and John Smoltz on the disabled list, Atlanta has Tim Hudson and Jair Jurrjens - a name that stands out anywhere. The Cubs have Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster.
The Phillies have Cole Hamels. That's it.
The ageless Jamie Moyer is fine. Kyle Kendrick has been very effective but hardly overwhelms hitters. Eaton has made some decent starts, to be fair, but is ever capable of a game like last night's. Myers is a cipher.
The Phillies are an offense-first team, no question about that. But offense is much more prone to hot streaks and cold snaps than first-rate pitching. Over the course of a long season, the teams that get the best pitching, week in and week out, tend to rise toward the top.
When Atlanta was winning all those division titles in the 1990s and 2000s, the lineup changed dramatically. Pitching was the constant.

Aw, shit hot, people!
Who has the best record in the majors NOW, toots?

Yawn. If you played as many games as we have then I would be impressed (yeah, not really). However you haven't.

Great--a bunch of players who don't deserve to be there, put there by a bunch of ballot-stuffing mouth-breathers. Sorry, but a LOT of more deserving players got overlooked or outright dissed. Doesn't make your players any better, sad to say.
But go on--please explain to me why a guy who isn't in the top 50 in ANY offensive category save homeruns (13) when THAT'S ALL HE DOES is somehow named to the All-Star team?
Save your smack-talk for this weekend. Friday is already set...Lackey versus Buchholz. Hope you're hungry because you're gonna be eating a lot of this:

Yawn.

Enjoy the ride Sparky cause it will be stopping soon. You know that as sure are you are sitting there reading this.

Say it with me, sweetie...EIGHT OUT OF NINE. That's not a fluke, that's not a quirk, that's your asses getting PUNKED. OWNED. USED.
So far we're 7-2 against your vaunted division this road trip, and that includes:
5 of 6 against the Sox and Yankees IN YOUR CRIBS
Sweeping you AGAIN, this time IN YOUR CRIB. You won ONE game against the Angels this year. ONE.
You really want to face us in the ALCS or ALDS, assuming you even make the postseason? Bring. It. On.

Sweeping you AGAIN, this time IN YOUR CRIB. You won ONE game against the Angels this year. ONE.
You really want to face us in the ALCS or ALDS, assuming you even make the postseason? Bring. It. On.
Yawn.
So what's new kids?
Anything? I mean besides the Angels being the flavor of the month in the media that is.
Enjoy the ride Sparky cause it will be stopping soon. You know that as sure are you are sitting there reading this.
I am glad this thread is pinned also. I know how this story ends......
Flavor of the month? Bwahahahaha!
Say it with me, sweetie...EIGHT OUT OF NINE. That's not a fluke, that's not a quirk, that's your asses getting PUNKED. OWNED. USED.

Now, don't be getting too cocky, Sparky. Regular season records don't mean a thing when the playoffs begin... just ask Patriot fans.
:thatsright: Oh, shit! Sorry sis
Nah, that is a total Philly team motto Red.
Regular seasons do count. Angels were on a run that Sparky better know will not last outside of his own division. Yankees owned them -- you would think Sparky would be concerned by that, but oddly no.
It's going to be good folks.
You know I love you to death, but you really need to retake Sesame Street.
We SPLIT with the Yanks. In New York. I'll take that.
Oh, and for the record:
LAA-NYY record for 2008: 2-2, with six left to play.
LAA-BOS record for 2008: 8-1, with none left to play.
BOS-NYY record for 2008: 6-6, with six left to play.
You really are gunning for that third-place finish, aintcha?
And here's a pleasant little thought for you: BOSTON MASSACRE (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/08/21/yankees_finish_off_five_game_sweep/). Sweet dreams.
Hmmmm...17 games up with 21 to play...and you're leading your division by how many games?

What is your win record? uh-huh. How many games are you up on the Sox? uh-huh.
Few more weeks and we will compare the final tally.
You know I really miss Don and Coco. I wish they would sign up here. :(

Why--so someone could be MORE wrong than you?

It was an accident. He didn't mean to blow out his knee. "My bad."
The ESPN article in which they are rejoicing over Brady's injury really made me sick to my stomach (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-3-49/Domino-effect--How-Brady-s-knee-impacts-AFC.html). Talk about taking pathetic Patriot hatred (jealousy) to the absolute max.

I cried for you when I heard about this. My condolensces. :(
All is right with which world?

And we didn't even have to blow out Cutler's knees to do it.
See ya in Week 7. BTW--who is the only NFL team to have a winning record against the Pats since 2001?
» I want to admire the Denver Broncos for opening the season with a blowout victory on the road. At the same time, I find it impossible to ignore the fact that their opponent, the Oakland Raiders, provided no more resistance than they could expect to receive going against air on the practice field. Jay Cutler did show how much better a quarterback he is now that he's undergoing treatment for diabetes. He has regained the size and strength to stand tall in the pocket (not that the Raiders defense gave him much reason to feel uncomfortable) and throw the ball with zip and accuracy. Rookie receiver Eddie Royal demonstrated that he has difference-making skills. But, I'm sorry. It's hard to truly know just how good the Broncos are because their opponent was so incredibly bad. We'll get a much better idea when they take on the San Diego Chargers in Week 2.
And you against the Jets. This oughta be good. Do we need to put you on suicide watch Sunday night?

Oh hell's no.
D-line don't need Brady to squash Favre's ass. :-)

No, you just need some guys who aren't already in walkers.
Nice choke job against the Rays.
Hang your head in shame, FL. Tell me right now, admit it before all on this board, that the Pats are DONE. OVER. FINISHED.

Ah you're kidding me right?
Picture this, 2001 season. Week 5. Brady's second game after the Bledsoe injury. Brady's Pats lose to Miami 30-10.
How did that season end again?
While I am disgusted at their performance Sunday, you would have to be a complete fool to say they are done for the season. You know, the same kind of fool that thinks Denver's 3-0 start is something to get excited about.

In all reality, FL, they're only 2-1. Everyone knows they didn't really beat the Chargers.

Neither does videotape. Touchdowns scored by running the patented "Zebra Offense" have no street cred.

Name the only team who has a winning record against the Pats since 2001. Try, please?

Tell ya what--you go to Roger Goodell himself and tell him to take that "W" out of the column and see how far ya get, m'kay?

The Giants?

Bzzzzzzt! Wrong!

Pinning for posterity.
I honestly don't see how the Phils are going to blow it this year little bro. They are walking away with the NL pennant my friend....... only to be beat by the Red Sox, but they are going to the dance.

I'm gonna unpin this with the Red Sox now have a fork sticking in them.
For the record my OP was for the Phils, and you pinned this based on my statement that the Angels would be eliminated in the first round -- I am correct on both accounts.
The fumes that the Red Sox were running on ran out, but they were almost there and certainly would have been if Ortiz, Lowell and Beckett were healthy.
