Things are getting worse in Cleveland.....
Advertisements [?]Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 05:32 PM by OhioChick
One of my kid's friends lives in Cleveland and he said that things have gotten so bad in Cleveland as of late, he's afraid to go out after dark. For some time now, people have been going into homes that were "for sale" or abandoned and gutting all of the copper out for scrap. Now, they're hitting the homes that people live in....during the day when most are at work.

Most people no longer can leave lounge chairs, lawn mowers or grills outdoors unattended, any longer. My kid's friend said that his family had everything usually kept outdoors stolen, so now have their used grill and lawn mower they purchased is kept in their living/dining rooms.

The newest thing that he told me last night was the city was having problems with gas siphoning...(that's a given) but a group of people going around late at night and stealing the catalytic converters off of the older cars for scrap. I cannot imagine using a hand saw to get one of those off, so they must be using a reciprocating saw which I would tend to think would be as loud as hell in the middle of the night.

From what he said, citizens of Cleveland call the police, but unfortunately.....they never show up. Things are very, very bad here.

To make matters worse, I heard within the past month or two that they've closed down one of Cleveland's police precincts....

On Edit to Add: Too much in the way of job loss here....and it isn't ending.

Police can't respond? I guess we'll just have to hire some private contractors...
How long before the first stateside "Iraqi style" bloodbath happens here?

I honestly think that if private contractors start patrolling US city streets, a second revolution won't be far off.

3. Budget cuts and many being deployed over and over again has decimated

15. SCOTUS says government is not obligated to protect an individual unless she/he is in custody & that
 includes property.

Defense of self and property is a personal problem and unfortunately citizens of Cleveland are finding out the hard way.

How awful, the people of Cleveland should vote out their Republican administration ... oh...

I don't think most of our grandparents were out of childhood yet, the last time Cleveland had a Republican mayor.

So who's to blame?

Voinovich was mayor during the 80s when we lived in Cleveland but he's a 'rat in disguise, so he doesn't count. Also it's been like this in the city for 30 years, where has the DUmmy been?

But one has to remember something.

Voinovich is a Republican, and was the Republican mayor of Cleveland.

However, the machine that runs Cleveland is a Democrat machine.

A Republican mayor of a large corrupt city does sometimes happen--Lost Angeles and New York City of recent memory--but he is, essentially, just a figurehead.  In fact, sometimes corrupt Democrat machines "allow" the election of a Republican, so as to give the impression something's being done--it's an old public-relations gimmick.

The same happened with recent Republican governors of Massachusetts; it was always obvious who was running the show, and it wasn't William Weld or Mitt Romney.

Pretty sad that the party that wins Ohio in the last ten or so Presidential elections has gone on to win the White House . . .

My cousin just moved there and LOVES it.  Of course she also lived in St. Louis and loved it there too.  You couldn't pay me enough to live there.  It has turned into the cesspool of Ohio.

The thing is...the DUmmies could be living in paradise and would still find something to complain about. If there is nothing to complain about, they would just make something up.

I'm not a 'buddy'. I'm a girl. And Kentucky, while beautiful, is still full of some of the more regular types on the Springer show. I think the 5 state area here supplies most of his guests.  :lmao:

I'm sorry, I've lived in a few places...the midwest would NOT be my first pick. It has its moments, but they aren't consistent enough. It's like putting your life on hold for 6 months out of the year with the weather and the people tend to be either the extreme of too reserved or the type of backwoods that provide waaaayyy TMI.

To each his own. I know that kind of love for an area. Despite all the lame comments made about Miami and the surrounding areas I endure as well, I absolutely LOVE it and wish sometimes I never moved away from it. Looking back, it was an absolute paradise to grow up in, despite its problems at times.

BTW, that's what my new avie and countdown is about. My dad lives about an hour or so north of Miami and the kids and I will be staying down there for nearly 3 weeks. I SO TOTALLY can't wait! :-)

FIVE states, you say?  My experience with "other" people has led me to believe the triad of stupidity is

Pennsylvania
Ohio
West Virginia

but I suppose my horizons could stand some broadening...

Hey I have lived in all 3 of those states. :bawl:

JTYANGEL I should have mentioned that I would rather live in Detroit than some areas of Kentucky.  Like up near Cincinatti, there are some really icky places there.  Miami is beautiful but too dang hot!  I would melt on day one there even in winter.

Don't discount Indiana and Kentucky(those are the two states you missed). I'm tempted to say Michigan too since there's plenty of Springer guests in Detroit city council alone to make it worthy of mention. :-)

I was just commenting on getting jumped on by a couple of peeps here(I don't think you did even though I might have quoted your post). My point was my favorite usually gets its fair share of comments too. People vary on this stuff. I'm not a big fan of the midwest, I'm really not. Doesn't need defending though...that's just my personal tastes and experiences. If y'all like it, that's more room for you when I leave it someday.  :-)

I admit I'm a total beach girl. I love the ocean, I love the waves, I love the sand, I love love love tropical climates. I'm also more comfortable with people who are warm and affectionate in their greetings, tone, and vivacious in their mannerisms. I think given all that it makes sense that I am comfortable in a place like Miami. I find the Latino culture and how lively and expressive it is in general more of a 'fit' for who I am. I just don't 'fit' in the midwest and I know it. I think I've only met a couple people up here that I would qualify as having those qualities without being totally crass which I also don't care for.

Cincy is just my adopted "home" but it's swell enough. When I decide to make a big move it will be to the Great Northwest, the Southeast coast, the South or the Midwest. In any case, my stand-by rule is that only the locals get to make fun of any given area w/o being challenged on it.

Peace and love...

You know, it seems to me that Oklahoma, much like Ohio State, got railed by teams that they should have beaten handily.  For that matter, I seem to remember more than a little fear on the part of OSU at having to face the WVU offense.  But, alas, WVU decided to lay down at the end of the year and gave OSU a chance to continue their perfect record against SEC teams.    :rotf:

OTOH, you should be glad that OSU was bitch-slapped by LSU.  Could you imagine the embarrassment of getting blown out by UF one year and WVU the next?

Kentucky, while beautiful, is still full of some of the more regular types on the Springer show. I think the 5 state area here supplies most of his guests.  :lmao:

FIVE states, you say?  My experience with "other" people has led me to believe the triad of stupidity is

Pennsylvania
Ohio
West Virginia

but I suppose my horizons could stand some broadening...

Probably wouldn't hurt......

Hey now.  My inlaws are all from WVA.  "WVU" adorns lots of my kids clothes.  In fact......one Christmas, my FIL bought every single person in the family a WVU t-shirt....I have a pic of it somewhere....

It's all good, LP, I grew up there.

Darn it, I knew that too. (you are "unbuddied")  :p

Cincy is just my adopted "home" but it's swell enough. When I decide to make a big move it will be to the Great Northwest, the Southeast coast, the South or the Midwest. In any case, my stand-by rule is that only the locals get to make fun of any given area w/o being challenged on it.

Peace and love...

... and

Well, I am a local so what do you think of that?  I get to make fun of where I live while I live here :lmao:

Hey, we still got the Buckeyes, Rearden. *waits for the SEC fans, WV fans, and Michigan fans to come and dog our team...as usual...haters  :-)*

Thanks for unbuddying me...I took the most offense to that. I'm no boy, dang it!  :thatsright: :-)

Yes, it has been a while.  In fact, I looked at some info sites on-line and apparently it wasn't the first time that river had fire difficulties in the Cleveland area.

So the fire problem morphed into other problems.  Such is life.
