Current (1:00 p.m. Saturday) scores in the Southeastern Conference:

Western Carolina 0
Alabama 42

Arkansas 14
Mississippi State 17

Jacksonville State 0
Florida 10

Wofford 0
South Carolina 7

Georgia South 0
Georgia 7

Alabama A&M-Auburn, Mississippi-Louisiana State, Sam Houston State-Texas A&M, Syracuse-Missouri, Tennessee-Vanderbilt, Samford-Kentucky, to come later.

Why are Tennesse and Vanderbilt playing today?

I thought that was one of those historic season-ending rivalries, like Ohio State-Michigan, Harvard-Yale, Southern California-UCLA, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Washington-Washington State, Texas-Texas A&M, Kansas-Kansas State, &c., &c., &c.

Don't know, Frank.  I just hope the real LSU shows up and not the one that laid down against Alabama.

I just checked.

Tennessee plays Kentucky at its season-ender.

Kentucky?  Are you kidding me?

Despite the disparity in greatness between the two teams, I always thought Tennessee and Vanderbilt were season-enders, the big rivalry (in the historical and cultural senses, not the television-appeal sense).
Title: Re: LSU is going down!

Never thought of it that way.  Just wanted good football.....
Title: Re: LSU is going down!

I further checked.

On slate for next week, the season-enders for the Southeastern Conference:

Georgia Tech-Georgia
Florida-Florida State
Auburn-Alabama
Mississippi State-Mississippi
South Carolina-Clemson

I dunno if Louisana State-Arkansas has any "history," or Vanderbilt-Wake Forest.

Missouri-Texas A&M looks as if the Southeastern Conference wants to relegate them to the poor relative's side of the kitchen table; the "leftovers" who don't seem to "fit in."

It's nice however to see that at least ten teams (five games) respect tradition.

Gonna be a great day to put a smack down on Ga Tech, The Gamecocks/Tigers game is usually pretty good.

Man, what happened to college football?

Checking the rest of the season's schedules, I see Texas ends the season with.....Kansas State.

WTF?

I know, I know, Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference, but still, they could've kept the Texas-Texas A&M game as the season-ender.

Title: Re: LSU is going down!
Post by: md11hydmec on November 17, 2012, 01:27:30 PM
I agree.  I wasn't thrilled with A&M coming to the SEC to begin with, but they actually put on a good show.  Like you, I wish they kept the rivalry games at the end.

UT and UK are rivals.  They used to play for The Old Whiskey Keg, but I think both schools did away with that several years ago.

In the Big 10, there's a few of the usual classic season-enders:

Michigan-Ohio State
Illinois-Northwestern
Indiana-Purdue

The Nebraska-Iowa game is a forced "rivalry," forced upon us by the effete eastern elites who think that Nebraska and Iowa are very much alike, two peas in a pod, and so it's a "natural" to be our season-enders.

Actually, it's an Abomination.

And Michigan State-Minnesota and Wisconsin-Penn State?  Why are three fine teams being relegated to "left-over" games in the Big 10?

fransolich's suggestions for season-enders in the Big 10:

Ohio State-Michigan
Indiana-Purdue
Illinois-Northwestern
Nebraska-Wisconsin
Minnesota-Iowa

I dunno what to do about Michigan State and Penn State.  Teams can't have two season-enders, so Michigan-Michigan State is out.  And Penn State needs expelled from the conference--not for the Sandusky mess, but simply because Penn State has the sorriest-assed fans in all of college football.

UT and UK are rivals.  They used to play for The Old Whisky Keg, but I think both schools did away with that several years ago.

I figured there was a little bit of history in the Tennessee-Kentucky game, but surely not as much as in the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game.

Actually, from Tennessee's POV, their biggest rival is Alabama.  Third Saturday in October.

The Pacific 10 seems to still respect tradition, but not as much as they should.

The classic traditional season-enders next week:

Washington-Washington State
Arizona State-Arizona
Oregon-Oregon State

There's Utah-Colorado, but because of the sorry-assed fans of Colorado, no point in rewarding Colorado with a notable season-ender.

Apparenty Southern California-UCLA as a season-ender has gone the way, alas, of the horse and buggy.

Stanford-UCLA, and Notre Dame-Southern California next week.

I really dislike how television screwed up old season-ending rivalries.

Man, ever since Nebraska left the Big 12, that conference has been a mess.

The only traditional season-ender is Oklahoma State-Oklahoma, but Oklahoma does play Texas Christian the week following.

I still can't believe Texas is ending its season with Kansas State.

Kansas State?

The Johnny-come-lately, parvenu, flash-in-the-pan Kansas State?

USC-UCLA still end the season often on odd years but both are pretty good traditions.

Im sad that Texas has wimped out and refused to continue the rivalry with TAMU. Although I can understand not wanting to face Johnny Football.

Yes USC was the favorite in that respect but purely on tradition and the history of USC winning 12 of the last 13 years. UCLA got a new no nonsense HC and has been rolling this year though.

I wonder what's wrong with Nebraska.

Minnesota 0, Nebraska 10, one-third of the way through the second quarter.

Even though Minnesota's one of the very few teams that has a winning record against Nebraska, usually they're push-overs.

Nebraska 84, Minnesota 13, in 1984, I think.

The game that drew a lot of criticism from Nebraska-haters, but hey, the game was up there in Minnesota, and we could take only a limited number of players, all of whom played.  Near the end, it was suggested Osborne send in the water-boys to get some football under their belts.

I'm not sure how the guy in the cubicle's going to call it, though.

He must be looking at his keyboard cross-eyed.

Thanks.

I knew there were other penalties, but I never thought not being ranked was one of them, as in the past penalized programs have been ranked.

Once the BCS got started the ranking penalty started also because polls effect the BCS rankings. The sad thing is OSU could have taken their penalty last year when they were mediocre and been in the NC hunt this year.

A lot of teams at half-time at the moment.

In the Big Ten:

Minnesota 0, Nebraska 24
Ohio State 14, Wisconsin 7
Purdue 6, Illinois 3

You know, all things considered, Rebel just might be right, and Louisiana State's in a bit of trouble with Mississippi.

We'll see, but it is possible.

Minnesota 0, Nebraska 31, halfway through the third quarter.

Ohio State-Wisconsin still bogged down, 14-7 respectively, nothing going on in that game.

Okay, another--possibly--stupid question.

I follow the action on the ESPN scoreboard, of course.

Sometimes there's two games where half-time starts at about the same time.

But then one game's already being played well into the third quarter, while the other game's still at half-time.

Are half-times all the same length of time, or is the guy at the cubicle being slow?
Title: Re: LSU is going down!

Well, with only seconds to go in either game, it looks as if Ohio State and UCLA won theirs.

But the Ohio State-Wisconsin game must've been a real yawner, stuck at 14-7 since forever.

Ohio State-Wisconsin apparently now into overtime.

Okay, that's all the football watching I'm doing for the day.

You know, it's really ridiculous.

These scoreboard internet services hire guys to sit in cubicles, watching one game each on television, and punching the statistics into a keyboard as they happen.

It seems an easy job, as easy as strawberries and cream.

And I'll bet they're paid more than minimum wage.

Nice, cushy jobs, sitting at a computer, watching a football game, and keying the strokes as needed.

But probably the boss of the scoreboard services takes Saturday afternoons off, leaving the other guys unsupervised, and so they probably dig into the Jack Daniels and Colombian Gold during the afternoon, and perhaps even cop a few feels off the office secretary.....neglecting their jobs.

There's no reason for such a signicant time-lag between what happens in real life, and when the statistics are punched in; in fact, the statistics should be up within a split-second, if one's on his toes and alert.

I agree.  I wasn't thrilled with A&M coming to the SEC to begin with, but they actually put on a good show.

I was. Mizzou could have stayed their asses in the 12 or joined the B1G where the rest of the yankees are though.  :-)

Never wanted to see Texas and A&M to lose their rivalry, but there was so much bad blood against Texas that no one could blame A&M. The SEC shares all revenue. Texas acted like it owned everything and everyone else was there as a sideshow. It's why you hear players and fans yelling after the NC, not their teams name, but SEC! SEC! SEC!

Stanford 17, Oregon 14, final.
