Title: If you could see anybody in concert at any time, Who would you see?
Post by: Splashdown on November 10, 2012, 06:07:09 PM
Money is no object. Time period is no object.

Here's mine:

The Band's Last Waltz Concert on Thanksgiving Day 1976. Some of the biggest names of the time were there.

The J. Geils Band. I don't know how the hell I missed them. They played all the time in the '80s.

Patsy Cline. She had one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.

Probably more.

Pink Floyd before Syd Barrett went all nutso.

The Beatles before they were famous so I can kick John Lennon in the balls.

The Grateful Dead before Pigpen passed away and they turned into crap.

Metallica before Cliff Burton died and they turned into crap.

The Beach Boys during Pet Sounds.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mozart or Beethoven.  That would be amazing.

Too many others to name.

I saw Pink Floyd just after their release of the Ummagumma LP. I saw em at the Easttown theater. They opened for Fleetwood Mac before  Peter Green quit. The Eastown was Detroit's version of the Fillmore West.

This was in 70. I use to go there or the Grande Ballroom every week end, both Fri and Sat night. Selling lids and dealing hippy chicks. :stoner:

I saw the Doors and passed on seeing Hendrix (  :hammer:) I guess I would have liked to have seen Big Brother and the Holding Company.

I've seen most bands of that era. It cost 2 bucks to get in.

I saw The Clash at the Red Rocks amphitheatre in Colorado.  It was good, I can't imagine a better concert so I guess I'd like to see it over again--and I wasn't even that big of a fan of The Clash.

Must've been 2004 when I saw Doc Severinsen. Amazing musician and performer. And he was in his late 70's at the time and he's still going strong.

And if you want to be kicked squarely in the balls by sheer virtuosity, go see Arturo Sandoval sometime:

This one:

On December 25, 1989, [Leonard] Bernstein conducted Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in East Berlin's Schauspielhaus (Playhouse) as part of a celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He had conducted the same work in West Berlin the previous day. The concert was broadcast live in more than twenty countries to an estimated audience of 100 million people. For the occasion, Bernstein reworded Friedrich Schiller's text of the Ode to Joy, substituting the word Freiheit (freedom) for Freude (joy).[34] Bernstein, in his spoken introduction, said that they had "taken the liberty" of doing this because of a "most likely phony" story, apparently believed in some quarters, that Schiller wrote an "Ode to Freedom" that is now presumed lost. Bernstein added, "I'm sure that Beethoven would have given us his blessing."

--from Wikipedia article on Leonard Bernstein.  While I don't expect to meet him in Glory, that concert, for me, made up for much public wrongness (lovin' on black panthers, etc.).

I was stationed in West Berlin at that time and I remember Lennie's visit. I didn't attend either performance, unfortunately.  :banghead:

Well I've pretty much seen all the bands I'd like to see in concert so there are a few I'd like to see again.

Becoming the Archetype
Demon Hunter
As I lay Dying
Sleeping Giant
White Collar Sideshow

Also that was all young people rock and roll for all you old people. With their loud guitars and drums.

Bands I have seen, but don't care to see again are
Ozzy Osbourne
Megadeth (They sucked soooo much. Dave should've retired years ago.)
Metallica

I saw Patsy Cline when I was seven or eight.  I was eight when she died.  I cried because I was in love.

I bet seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park would have been pretty good.

I saw Levon Helm and his band maybe 3 years ago at the Electric Factory in Philly--I was this close to the stage. He was pushing 70, had suffered through throat cancer. It was the best concert I've ever seen, hands down.

Cats, have you ever gone to a Midnight Ramble at the barn up there?

No they were a might pricey! But a few private jam sessions at the farm and I knew him as a customer of mine as is Garth. I was very close to the stage at this one!

I return the high5 for listing The Last Waltz! Yeah I think if I could pick one that would be it. I wore the vinyl out of that album!

There's a smartphone app called Wolfgang's Vault. It collects concerts from some of the greatest bands ever. The band's Last Waltz concert is there, completely unedited. It's a little raw, but it's great to hear it.

I'm not sure if you're a smartphone/ipad/ipod geek, but if you are, it's worth getting.

Thought of another one I'd have loved to be there for:

Roger Waters's The Wall at the Berlin Wall in 1990. That would have been fun to see--pretty star studded.

I would also like to catch up with bands I somehow missed.  Iron Maiden and Motorhead specifically. Don't know how I did that?

Good choice! Growing up in Woodstock, NY was weird, I met her too. My older sister took me to a club when I was 14. The Sled Hill Cafe, she was there tying one on and sang a few songs for the patrons and then sat at our table and thought it was fun to feed me beers! Ah memories.

I saw them some time in the 90's.

It probably would have been a better show if the drummer had two arms at the time.  His drum setup was interesting, though.  Lots of trashy-lookin' girls, too.

Oh yeah, trashy looking girls are prerequisites at Def Leppard concerts LOL. It seems that during the Colorado concerts where the Armageddon It video was filmed, they were having sex with groupies in between songs under the stage. I wouldn't have done that, but I would've totally been stylin 80's style if I had seen them in concert.

I bet seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park would have been pretty good.

Tell ya what--seeing Springsteen and the ESB in Philly is awesome.  See, when he was just first starting out, a Philly deejay (whose name escpes me at the moment) started playing his stuff on his show in Philly, saying that Springsteen was going to be "the next big thing."  Well, Bruce got quite the following in Philly, so he always played his best shows there.  I got to see him there on August 11th, 2003 (Coach Herb Brooks died that night) at Lincoln Financial Field.  Effin' awesome show.  27 songs, over 3 1/2 hours.  He started with one that he'd never done before with the E Street Band, and I knew the song.  I was singing it at the top of my lungs, and the people in the row in front of me (we were 20 rows from the stage, in front of Clarence, and they were from Asbury Park) were asking each other, "How does he know this song?"  (I had it on a Bruce tribute album.)  Unreal show.

Now my daughter wants to see him with me . . .  :whistling: O-)

I've never really been into concerts at all. The only one I've ever been to was provided free for Canada day in Kanata Ottawa. I don't even remember who it was now :/

Despite not being into concerts and the like if I could have gone to any Electric Light Orchestra concert I sure would have.

My Husband has gone to a few Philly shows when his friends had extra tickets, I've never seen him in Philly, but the Philly shows are always the best shows, followed by the Garden. No idea why, but Bruce just comes across as a little nervous during the Jersey shows. We did have the pleasure of being at 1 of the best Bruce shows ever, Aug. 11 1999 at the Continental Airlines Arena, 10th row on the floor almost center, pure luck that we got those seats, Bruce added a few more shows, that show was 2nd to last, they added the extra shows because the other shows sold out so fast, I just happened to call at the right time, my husband was shocked at the seats. It was amazing seeing Bruce so close up.

I visited his grave.  Stevie, Jimmy Sr., and Martha are buried about 50 yards from my mother.  I grew up with the Vaughans.  We's all Oak Cliff folks.

You shoulda gone with the magic idea.  :)

Not a big concert junkie, but if I could go back to see any live event that would be impossible to see presently, I'd elect to go be a fly on the wall in the Constitutional Convention in 1787, or watch Lincoln wipe the dais with Stephen Douglas in the Lincoln/Douglas Debates.

As far as concerts I'm dying to see, I have tickets to see one of them on December 1st (http://www.forgottencarols.com/).
