From a part of the DUmp which we can't see as it's super-secret...perhaps they're discussing meta-nadin
jsmirman (3,971 posts)
Is meta the place to attack Nadin for being insufferable about Superstorm Sandy?
Words cannot express how shitty I find her post about the storm: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021714375
I have reached my breaking point with her.
For the record, living in one of the potentially Sandy-affected cities, I stocked up on enough stuff to ride out at least two weeks, and possibly a month. In the end, it wasn't much more than a nasty rainstorm here.
But I have a lot of friends who suffered greatly from Sandy, and it didn't ****ing matter what they had on hand when the storm hit. I also know people who pretty much lost everything. Friends of friends ****ing died.
And for this insufferable ninny to post her "I told you so" bullshit is just intolerable.
She could have made the exact same points without any of the insufferable nonsense, finger pointing, and victim shaming.
For the easily fooled, she pulls it back with a throwaway command that people give money, not compassion, but the post is all about Nadin using ****ing Superstorm Sandy to make herself feel better about herself.
And as to the official record, it's gotten to the point where I'd like to see certifiable proof of her official role in all the activities she claims to have participated in.
I'm sorry to be so hostile here, and I know her post has been up for a few days already. I was busy doing important shit, like helping win the damn election.
People attacking my home city is my trigger. I think her post is contemptible.
Oh my. It seems like somebody can't perceive nadin's greatness and bow down to her, as all should.

4. Well, she's probably already put you on ignore by now, so why not?
The ultimate punishment is raised - being ignored by nadin.

7. I have her on ignore so would not have seen her thread without your link. Thankfully.
My husband is a Firefighter and is also on a Disaster Medical Team. He was deployed to NY last Tuesday and we are really missing him. He is taking care of people who were evacuated from a nursing home, from a hospital wing and from a psych ward.
My husband is one of the most compassionate people I know. A GOOD first responder ALWAYS is. They know that people need compassion when they are in dire circumstances. It's not just about function and process, it's about caring for your fellow human beings. Not blaming, not rubbing their noses in their situation to score points. If she is what she always claims to be she's doing a damn shitty job if she doesn't understand that.
Another one who doesn't see her innate superiority - tut tut tut.

10. whoa.......
You keep making posts like this and nadin with her super-all-knowing-pro-at-everything-and-better-than-you powers will tell Skinner he needs to PPR you.
I, like someone else posted, have little faith in her roles as she states simply because even though she tries....she does not 'talk the talk' of a true disaster worker. Her talk is all about how much more she thinks she knows about a topic than any constructive posting that will lead to discussion. Not sure nadin knows the concept of discussion....she knows how to point her finger....say I told you so...and toss bits of 'crunchy' information to us peons but, does not know the back and forth exchange of ideas and opinions. Probably because she does not think any of DU is on her level of intelligence (I say ignorance) to be worthy of troubling her 'beautiful mind' over.

26. The DU posters Nadin calls out in that post were the most vile posts I have read on
DU. One of them was insisting that NYC was safe, no one there should bother to prepare. This bullshit was being posted even as hundreds of thousands of NYC residents were being evaccuated. Another, with 'Hoboken' in the username was posting similar 'you yokles don't know how secure this city is' materials even as his own Hoboken was being flooded with sewage tainted waters.
Those posters endangered others with their bullshit. Those posters were bad, bad NYers, lousy citizens. They needed to be called out.
Some of my closest friends work in disaster preparation and recovery for Federal and State agencies. Posts like those Nadin called out place such workers in danger by encouraging those who could prepare to sit on Staten Island without a can of soup because 'the bodegas and delis never close, they have years of food on hand'.
Anyone in that storm's path should take great issue with not Nadin, but with the posters she called out. I also addressed them. To repeat, the most irresponsible posts I have ever read on DU. Awful, dangerous bullshit. It needed to be countered in thread for the safety of those who might be reading it. If it bugged you or others, that is inconsequential.
Only one nadin defender in quite a large bonfire...

27. The "I told you so" post was written on NOVEMBER 5th!!!
Are you ****ing kidding me?
I have more to say on her use of barely breathing strawmen, but the above makes your post ridiculous.
It didn't "need to be countered in (a)(?) thread" started November 5th.
Would you at least read the damn thing you are responding to???

33. What was really bad was those who prior to the storm that left NYers without food
Last edited Fri Nov 9, 2012, 04:02 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
wrote stuff like this: "But it doesn't take a genius to realize that "stocking up"
and this survivalist type planning is the LAST thing anyone in NYC needs.
Jeeze, you've got no clue, do you? "
I mean, was that the fact that no one needed supplies after the storm in NYC? To have some emergency supplies, as NYC authorities asked is 'the last thing anyone in NYC needs'?
"I understand supplies are huge for people in more isolated areas, but not here.
I'm sorry you're having such a rough time wrapping your head around it, but its very different here in that respect.
You can PM me for an apology when you find stories of NYers starving, okay? "
"I said we don't need to stock up, and my friends who evacuated would agree with me. Sorry my point- that we are sitting in a big ****ing piles of supplies over here- went right over that posters head. Sheesh."
Those posters encouraging others to refuse to prepare were in the wrong, extremely so, endangering others including those who later had to rescue those who did not prepare well enough.
Everyone should read the thread this is about, from which I pull my quotes and they can decide if those 'we don't need to prepare' posters were in need of correction.
Nadin was not alone in castigating those bad citizens, lousy NYers. She was right and they were oh, so wrong. Note the 'NY is perfectly safe' poster demanding apology when the storm caused no more than a burp to the city.
People dying is not the time to play 'too soon'. Never too soon to castigate such bad citizens as those telling others not to prepare because NY would magically serve them no matter what happends.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021640450#post17
How you can be offended that Nadin's comments were 'too soon' when you are not offended at those who were spreading unsafe bullshit before the storm. Talk about bad timing.

45. There are a lot of syntax problems in your post here
can you please correct them so that I can understand exactly what I am responding to and then tell you why you are wrong?
Syntax is the least of nadin's problems.
ProgressiveProfessor (18,457 posts)
40. I am surprised at all this poutrage at a GD thread several days old
that you did not even post in. Must be the implied criticism of NYC that triggered you.

43. You don't read. Was busy busting ass knocking on doors
just returned home after electing PROGRESSIVE Senator Elizabeth Warren.
But you wouldn't care about that because at least as your username goes, you appear to be a fraud.
ProgressiveProfessor (18,457 posts)
50. I read your claim
That is all it was.
I was not doing that since I am in SoCal...our election results were a lock.
What is not progressive about caring for the environment and advocating adequate preparation so that those in the most dire straights will get the resources needed?
jsmirman (3,971 posts)
53. My "claim" lol
Want to see receipts?
I'll take a photo for you of my all-night bus ticket to travel to Massachusetts for Elizabeth Warren after campaigning in Virginia. Btw, I came home early evening from campaigning in Virginia on Sunday and took that all-night bus THAT NIGHT.
Forget it - any further response to your ridiculous BS is unnecessary. Anyone who can read and remember basic things like "cows go moo" knows that I tried to organize people to go to Ohio and Florida, that I supported a wide array of progressive candidates in this election with money and time, etc.
If you don't, that's on you.
I live in a place where my election results are "a lock." That's why I TRAVELED to places where that wasn't the case. You could have gone to Nevada. But that would of course involve actually being true to what you claim to be, and you are not.
You care about the environment? That is delightful. Outside of your attack on cities, which I believe to be thoroughly inaccurate, I do not recall your pro-environment posts. It's great if those are somewhere within your regular program of liberal-bashing.
That would be the first actually progressive position I've seen you take.

57. I have a large solar plant I have built up over time
Last edited Fri Nov 9, 2012, 05:14 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
I have posted about it occasionally, mostly on DU2. You can see it from Google Earth if you care to look. It is limited at this point by line capacity. I also tend to post to debunk some of the green energy hype that is out there. It is too important a need to allow the hucksters to foul the waters so to speak.
The issue with older cities is well known in urban planning circles. Detroit is harbinger of what it so come, though similar pockets are already showing up in the northeast as well. US native population is shrinking faster than many realize, it is immigration that keeps things going. Without it, we would be like Japan. The older cities are environmental disasters due mostly to historical activities. Eventually some areas will have to have a massive clean up or be abandoned.
The University is in session, and I keep my commitments. I was working on local issues, which is where we should be concentrating more than we do. If you get the local votes right, the regional, state, and national will take care of themselves.
I bash non-thinking trash talking, and there is a lot of it out there. Those who invest so emotionally in "their city" and such that any disparagement triggers them are good examples of such.
jsmirman (3,971 posts)
60. Let me explain something to you
before I get back to sleeping off five straight days of traveling and campaigning: anyone who thinks New York doesn't need to exist right where it exists doesn't understand anything about geography, commerce, or the history of the world. Anyone who doesn't think New York will rebuild and will figure out how to protect herself is also missing some widely-available information on those topics.
New York has built over itself many times over, but New York has also had passionate, powerful conservation movements for a long, long time and is a masterpiece of urban planning.
Do you actually know the New York you criticize? The building of the grid system is one of the most remarkable stories of careful urban development in the modern(ish) world. That it took place as early as it did speaks to how remarkable it is.
Your comparison of New York to Detroit seems flat out ignorant.
You go in a lot of directions in your post, so I'm not sure what I'm responding to, but thank you very much, New York and immigration are like Peaches and Herb.
And my "local" issue - as a New Yorker and a U.S. citizen, is getting someone like Elizabeth Warren elected, someone who actually gives a shit about reforming Wall Street.
I don't get how you miss that cities are, in many ways, greener than the alternatives. Just some quick pulls online are:
http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-and-economy/2012/04/why-bigger-cities-are-greener/863/
http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/translating-uncle-sam/stories/urban-or-rural-which-is-more-energy-efficient
Mass transportation versus all the time others spend in cars is just a beginning point.
I personally don't like concrete paving over natural treasures, and despise the reckless encroachment of human dwelling into important habitat.
I don't think my city is a perfect place, but by God, I do call it home, and I am a proud New Yorker.
I think your solar plant sounds great.
I dislike much in the post I am responding to, but it is certainly the least displeasing post of yours I can recall reading.
I do so love it when they turn up the hate on each other.

58. I agree, and here is a link to the subthread discussion you're referring to.
It's dated FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26TH... 3 days BEFORE Sandy hit. Those upset by this issue, which continued in several subsequent OPs by Nadin and several others, really should read this first.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021640450#post17
They showed a great deal of patience with these DUers, and were trying to help. And were RIGHT.
jsmirman (3,971 posts)
62. Again, her post on November 5th is long after the fact
and is offensive.
Great, two or three posters avidly disagreed with her. Quite frankly, out of everyone I know who suffered from the storm - and that is many, many people - not ONE of them suffered from a lack of food or water, the sensationalist nonsense about dumpster diving aside. NOT ONE.
That doesn't mean I don't believe in stocking up in advance of uncertainty - it's simply prudent.
But a few posters carrying on an argument does not justify the nasty, self-congratulatory nature of the OP this thread covers, which was made well after the storm.
As I said, all points could have been made without any of the nastiness and gloating - AFTER A FREAKING DISASTER - which is rampant throughout her OP.
And it's not like her points convince me she is a real deal official capacity first responder/official relief efforts person. You only needed an online connection or a radio to get the mayor's instructions and follow them.
I actually don't think they were right, as, once again, of ALL the people I know who were affected, and this covers many many hundreds of people, NOT ONE suffered from a lack of food or water. But if they were right or wrong is not the point here. It's the finger pointing post disaster and the nastiness shown where it is simply counterproductive and out of place that is unacceptable.
Great, Nadin copy and pasted a bulletin on disaster preparedness. As I said, I stocked up for an apocalypse and my town hardly got hit.
Anyone want some spare dried apricots???

I do want to say to you that I really hope that all the people you know and all those affected in your area get the help they need -- in an ongoing way. Wow! I'm shocked! I thought lardasses stuck together.
Anyway, the DUmmies overlooked my favorite nadin post of the past year.
She was patiently describing to the DUmpmonkeys the many reasons nearly all other countries, especially mexico, are superior to America.
One reason is that due to our inferior educations, we've never embraced the eurotrash metric system.
She went on to explain that there are 60 centimeters in a meter.
Actually, she was right, there are sixty centimeters in a nadinmeter.
The crazy bald dwarf is two nadinmeters tall, and three nadinmeters in diameter.
Those dimensions describe an oblate spheroid.

A stopped clock is correct twice a day. Have to read through Nads stuff to find out at what time she is right.
I have to admit that giving money to anyone in a disaster is to throw it to the wind. What they need is man power, humanity rushing to their aid with food, blankets, tents seldom used, Hibarchies no longer used, fuel for cooking , clothing no longer needed , at this time of the year boots and gloves, ----Stores could ship down tooth brushes and tooth paste, sleeping bags from them that no longer camp. If we look in our attics and cellars we can find something to send. The things we no longer use but can save a life else where.
I gave up on Chirietys when I read about the huge salerys the heads of them get, my only Charity sending money is the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
With the huge tax breaks why are our companys not donanating tons of things to our the victims. ?

Ok this is odd, as in very odd, and please follow the bouncy ball
working on a story that actually involves the Human Rights Commission in Mexico City... and I cannot complete that international call.
Ok, that happened after the last quake, 7.1 all circuits got overloaded, fortunately it was not the we lost the comm tower like we did in 1985.
Here is what has me a tad nervous. A judge has indicted four senior officers in the Mexican Army (while retired, one of them before retirement was in line to become the next Secretary of Defense. and before retirement was the vice secretary of defense. Equivalent in the US a combo of the Secretary of the Army and the Commanding officer of the Army, responding to the Join Chiefs)
He had a lot of friends in important places within the army by the way, as in elite units. And the country is still having issues after the elections.
Not saying there was a coup, but this is odd indeed. I even checked the international calling code three times and called my mom, also in mexico city...
But all nooz sources from down there seem to be all normal and nothing seems amiss. I mean, we even have our daily report from the front lines (aka the dead from the war on drugs)... odd.
And it could be as simple as... a cable broke, or the satellite is having issues.

This isn't directed at you, sir, but other members.
When one posts a campfire from Skins's island, links to the original campfire are always a good thing to add.
It also helps to copy-and-paste the date and time of the primitive comment, as franksolich does.
But since that's more complicated, it's not obligatory, but perhaps one could copy-and-paste the date and time of the original comment at least?
Primitive comments used to always arrive here with the date-and-time stamp automatically, but when my fellow alum moved the primitives to the new island nearly a year ago, they don't any more.
And thundley4, sir, I got a bone to pick with you the next time you bring over a campfire.....
Someone recently asked me, "Hey, how come you're always editing thundley4's original topics?"
-

Those aren't any problems; my concern in that case was that you made a great comment, but it suffered from lack of proper formatting, and the reader might've dismissed it.
Nor is it too much of a problem to remind that links to Skins's island are important.
However.
However.

In the case of my good friend and colleague, one of the finest persons one can ever hope to meet, I suspect thundley4 does what he does on purpose, to see if franksolich is doing his job.

I don't understand. It's different from the old DUmp, but including date and time with a copied post from the new DUmp is no more difficult.
You just copy from the bottom up and wiggle your mouse at the top to catch the date and time.
I hated it at first, but now find it as easy as the original DUmp.
Very often, leaving date and time off the copied post destroys the purpose of bringing it over.
-

The stupid time and date won't come over unless I do a separate cut and paste of them. I highlight them with the posts I bring over, but they refuse to follow. Most of the posts I bring over are from the current day since I lurk on page 1 of general discussions on the island.

No, no, no, sir, good friend and stalward pal.
That's not the problem.
How come when you post an original topic from Skins's island--and we're all very appreciative of all that you do--you NEVER copy the name and post-count of the primitive lighting the campfire? You start the thread off with the primitive's original topic, but not with the primitive's name and post-count.
When you quote other primitives further on down, you do that, include the name and post-count.
Just the primitive originally lighting the campfire, you don't.
Seriously. It's gone on a long time, and I let it go because I was mystified as to why it was happening.
On the scale of things, it's just a small matter, no sweat.
And by the way, my good friend thundley4 contributes a great deal to conservativecave, and I especially am appreciate of that.

The stupid time and date won't come over unless I do a separate cut and paste of them. I highlight them with the posts I bring over, but they refuse to follow. Most of the posts I bring over are from the current day since I lurk on page 1 of general discussions on the island.
It works for me if you copy from the bottom up instead of top down.

And she has an irrational fear of hair brushes.
All we know is she is called the Nads.

I played around with copying posts and I think I have it figured out.
It works for me if you copy from the bottom up instead of top down.
It worked, but I had to copy from the very bottom of the post box.

In the event I actually have a little time I may have to branch out to other primitives as well. :-)

Well, the oblate spheroid finally showed up to defend herself.

99. Oh and one last thing
You think it's cool for supposed New Yorkers to go against standard civil defense advise and tell people that preparation is not necessary? You think those people were doing the right thing?
As to my credentials, I still have one of my Red Cross IDs...happens to be the Mexican Red Cross, unlike it's American counterpart, does have things like hospitals, ambulances trauma units, disaster services (like it's counterpart) and rescue services. Oh the list of other services is long, by the way.
But do tell me, how much does compassion buy you? How much do twenty dollars buy you? I guess encouraging people to donate to responding agencies so they can actually buy shit people need, like food, toothbrushes, toiletries, at times shelter, and the list goes on and in and on, is somewhat vile.
So out of respect to your city should I encourage people NOT to give money and NOT to prepare?
News flash. Sandy is the moment Americans realize ....global climate change is real and more disasters are in the future.
And yes, I love you too.
Oh and no skin off my nose if you put me on ignore. I will be brutally honest, I will consider it an honor. How about we mutually ignore each other?

102. Nadin, I'll respond to you fully if I have time, but the fact that you posted your "I won't have a star because I don't get to make the rules" post earlier today is laughable.
Why is it laughable?
I don't know if you are aware of this, but you are incredibly rude, caustic, dismissive, confrontational, and belittling in thread after thread, often where everyone else is calm before you drop in with such loveliness.
That's okay within the rules, but how you feel entitled to not receive the same back is what blows my mind.
You regularly practice the conduct that you decry as unfair when it is directed at you.
Our interaction on this board started with me defending you when I felt you were being unfairly chased from thread to thread. And that defense was not just a one off comment in a thread. I went well beyond that. You soon turned on me in a previously non-confrontational thread (this was long ago). That's okay. I think I know your ways now.
I believe this post to be acceptable under the guidelines of meta - as meta is the place where we should hash things like this out.
rhett o rick (22,826 posts) Tue Nov 13, 2012, 03:14 PM
106. So you call it "hashing out"? Getting together with your buddies and ridiculing a DU poster?
What do you hope to accomplish by this thread? Are you hoping that Nadin leaves DU? What then, you high five with your buddies.
Maybe you can goad her into violating TOS and you can claim credit for her TS.
We Democrats have a lot of work to do and this type of disruption isnt helping our cause.
Union Scribe (3,452 posts) Tue Nov 13, 2012, 03:53 PM
110. No. No no no.
People who constantly condescend to others and flaunt a laughable jumble of credentials while getting basic facts wrong do NOT get to claim bullying when others are hurt, offended, or just plain call bullshit on them. You have this entire situation reversed. The person you're so valiantly defending uses tragedies for self-serving anecdotes and lectures. They don't get to do that with impunity, nuh uh.
rhett o rick (22,826 posts) Tue Nov 13, 2012, 04:09 PM
111. So your justifcation for the bullying is that she deserves it?
Look at this thread. Posters are using ridicule in groups. No matter what she has done, this is not the way.
If you have facts, present them. No excuse for bullying.
I am not defending any of her actions although I never have run into any that you describe.
IMO there are those here that relish running people out of DU or getting them TS'd.
jsmirman (4,017 posts) Wed Nov 14, 2012, 04:57 AM
121. I want her to view the consequences of something like nasty finger pointing at a point in time where such behavior is counterproductive, insensitive, and simply untimely.
And those consequences are that people get upset by such posts, for reasons I've attempted to explain.
I think she turned this unnecessarily into something it need not have been - as I said, she could have made the same points without the self-congratulations and the belittling of others - in a topic that is very raw and close to home for many DUers.

What, exactly, do you think my post referred to?
truly an honest question.
rhett o rick (22,826 posts) Tue Nov 13, 2012, 05:35 PM
115. An honest reply. You used ridicule to indicate that you think Nadin has exaggerated her "claims".
I dont know if she does or doesnt. It really doesnt matter to me. I have never run into a post of hers where I thought she was exaggerating. If you do, it is very fair to point it out at the time. But this thread is an embarrassment.
We Democrats have a lot of work to do and we need to stop picking on each other and get to work.

The DUmmies are sensing a second DOTY for the crazy bald dwarf, and they hate her for earning such attention.
A howling swarm of DUmmies attacking a Top DUmmy are like a pack of hyenas surrounding a wounded buffalo.
The buffalo DUmbly swings its horns to and fro, and if the hyenaDUmmies aren't careful they'll be impaled.
In the long run, we know how the story ends, but maybe nutcase nadin will be an exception to the National Geographic channel rule.

What she needs to realize is this, New Yorkers are different, it's not like living in the suburbs, people in NY don't stock up on food, in most cases they don't even have a car, so there's no way they can lug the stuff home, and apts. are small in NY, no way could they stock up on weeks of food.

No, Bally, what she needs to "realize" is some self control and humility. Only then will she be able to actually see how much of a condescending ass she is. Anything less than fixing the true internal problem is just a band aid.

Oh God yes.
The oblate spheroid actually thinks she's the brightest person who's ever existed, brighter even than God.
It's a very strong and tenacious illusion of hers.
Of course, the reality is, she's dumber than a rock.

Remember, if the oblate spheroid's anywhere in the Top Ten, the award is a Freudian description and analysis of her sexual fantasies.
She's opened her yap so much that even a layman can figure it out.

The quintessential democrat voter...
And because the oblate spheroid's smarter than all those who came before her, the collective lore of her people, a lapsed Jew, she's perhaps not aware that "humility is the beginning of wisdom."

Nadine is either really liked or hated at DU. I wonder if DU is factionalized.
