I know you should not flush pills, but can you flush aspirin?

Isn't it made from willow bark?

1. Not really

Willow bark contains salicylic acid, but aspirin is SYNTHETIC salicylic.

8. No, it's not "synthetic salicylic."

Salicylic acid is the compound found in willow bark. In that form, it's extremely irritating to our digestive tracts. Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid, which is not nearly as irritating, and later metabolizes to salicylic acid. It's a much better way to deliver the drug.

3. Take it to Walgreen's. Mine has a place to dispose of drugs.

6. No, it's one of the things we made in high school chemistry

All aspirin is made in the lab. However, it does break down readily into vinegar and a couple of other simple compounds so if it's out of date, flush it.

As for flushing other medication, it's still the preferred way to get rid of it because sending it to a landfill keeps it in concentrated form while flushing it disperses it.

I wish there were better options for disposal, myself, such as returning it to manufacturers for reclaimation. Unfortunately, flushing is the best we've got now.

^^^needs no identification.

I know you should not flush pills
Why?

I can't think of a reason, except in the case of democrats, where it might be construed as destroying evidence.

From what I have read the biggest problem in the big city's is the waste water that contains every drug know to man, at this time.

City's try to reclaim  and purify the waste water, but the problem is now that there are so many drugs in the water from piss an poop of humans that it is a daunting task.   I would never flush any medication down a toilet, Next week I may be boiling potato's in that stuff.

Chicago 30+ years ago at O'Hara the water fountains spewed out a pale yellow water.  People drank that stuff, Yuck back then.

Never flush drugs drugs down the toilet, keep them in Tupperware small containers , water proof, in the toilet tank.  There is a good reason why Tupperware still sells like hot cakes, learned this from some Ghetto friends.   Also a good place to hide cash, few thieves will even think of checking out the toilet tank.

Actually there is an ounce of truth to one of the DUmmy's statements. If you open a bottle of aspirin and it smells of vinegar toss it.
But leave it to a DUmmy to do things the hard way. Just put the cap back on the bottle and throw it in the trash.

True. The sewer system is not a universal disposal site.
Should not be treated as such.

My dads doctor told him our sewers are full of undigested pills.   I even read that there is a lot of prozac found in sewer water.

But don't throw away unused/out of date aspirin.  Plant in your garden, kills fungus that grows around plant roots, put in a vase of fresh flowers, make a paste for mosquito/bug bites, grass and other stains (mixed with lemon juice) and I'm sure other uses.

In my job, I go to a fair number of sewage treatment plants.  One guy who runs a plant for the NYC DEP in the Catskills told me that there's "everything from HIV to holy water" going into sewage treatment plants.

But, good sewage treatment plant operators are proud of the fact that what comes out of their plants is almost always a lot cleaner than the body of water it's going into.

Hey, OS--is this the case where you work(ed)?
