My...before the storm hit
Several of us told New Yorkers right here on DU why they had to carry at least the minimum of preparations. We were told that no, NYC was exceptional. It will truly be before Sandy and after Sandy for NYC residents.

As to the people in the zone...I am almost willing to bet that while most of you are giving money right now, the ARC and other charities are counting on the first week after incident for 95% of the money they will get...not lack of compassion, reality, in two weeks the stories will mostly be gone from your papers.... reconstruction, and recovery...free hint, people are still rebuilding from Katrina, you want to do some real good...find some money to give to longer term charities and NGOs...(Hint, habitat for Humanity)

Yup, already gave the cash we could afford and will make a point to give in two months, when most of you will have, predictably, after all the lectures and faux outrage, moved on

I've got to wonder how much of this mess is from meteorologists crying wolf too many times. We live in a serious snow belt, waking up to sixteen inches is not surprising (it's snowing right now, actually.) But in the last five to seven years, seems like the weather men have to proclaim doom and gloom worst case scenarios every time snow starts falling. Probably half a dozen times throughout the winter, we are hearing about a possible blizzard that may be the worst in decades, and invariably, it ends up being nothing out of the ordinary. But schools shut down and people panic. And what's funny is that the two really serious storms we've had in that time period, the weather men completely missed. I still joke about driving in to work and the radio said to expect four to eight inches of snow-the numbers were right but wrong at the same time, we had four feet by the end of the day. My point is, after hearing horrible news from these guys and never having it happen, I've become very skeptical of weather predictions. Even living on the opposite end of the state from the city, when sandy hit we still had all the schools shut down, people were panic buying water and supplies-yet all we got was some gusts and rain.

I've heard yankees in Florida claim that because they had lived through blizzards they could handle anything a hurricane could throw at them, and they weren't going to abandon their beach front dream home. The ones that were found after the storm are all back up north now.
