Really Staten Island?????
I've seen the clips from yesterday about 5 times now with those Staten Island residents demanding their assistance and decrying that no one has been there to help. Each time I yell at the TV...
YOU LIVE ON A ****IN ISLAND!! and need to take a ferry to get there.
THERE WAS MANDATORY EVACUATION!! and you ignored it choosing to stay.
WHERE ARE YOUR 3 DAYS OF FOOD & WATER? You're told right on the FEMA site to prepare yourself - this is YOUR responsibility!
Sandy hit Monday night so Tuesday was Day 1. FEMA was there on Tuesday. Supplies are coming today. The response is the best of any disaster relief in history.

anyone is supposed to feel badly for people who generated their own situation? hardly. The OP is right on. The IC or plans section chief has apparently, and rightfully, assigned them a spot in the response priority list.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY (WAFF) - The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews learned they could not help out in New Jersey unless they affiliated with a union.
Utility crews volunteered with Sandy recovery. See photos.
Crews from Decatur Utilities headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees

I am being told that both companies are denying this happened.
Two area utility systems - Huntsville Utilities and Joe Wheeler Cooperative - mentioned in media reports claiming their crews were not allowed to help with storm aid in New Jersey because they were non-union said this morning the story is untrue.
The general manager of the other department mentioned, Decatur Utilities, has been unavailable for comment this morning. One of its crew members was quoted in the initial reports.
Bill Yell, spokesman for Huntsville Utilities, said nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from Hurricane Sandy and had no union-related issues.
"That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle."

4. ...The big timebomb I'm seeing here are those long gas lines...that affects a lot more people in that region. Those long lines made for "compelling teevee" and another image Willard and his propagandists will try to push all weekend. It's important they try to make the President look inept and they only have 4 days to do it...

A rep from Decatur Power was on the phone on Varney's show on FoxBusiness this morning and confirmed that his crews got to a staging area in VA, and IBEW refused to let them go on unless the company signed them on to the union, and wouldn't back off it, so the company pulled them back home.

Having lived in Burlington County, NJ, for several years, yes, it's true. It's one of the two states I know of that have such a law, 'To protect jobs.' It wouldn't really slow things up particularly, though, that's more an electric power and fuel supply issue.

I can't imagine handing my bank or credit card over to some minimum-wage no-speakee-English immigrant just off the boat just for gas. Sounds like a great way to get ripped off.

We did that for many years and never heard of a problem. Then after the big price jump in the 70s, when gas approached forty cents a gallon, stations started offering a nickel or so discount if you pumped your own.
Of course, in the 70s, gas station employees were still English-speaking Americans.

Of course this has nothing to do with the hurricane victims' preparation or lack thereof. It's the fact that they had the temerity to complain to the MSM about the response, just a few days before the election, that has the DUmmies in a snit. That's been the decree at DU for the last few months: No complaining about Dear Leader until he is re-elected. Until then you must suffer in dignified silence for the greater good. Once he is ensconced for another four years you may continue wheedling for your pony, and he may turn His Great Grinning Visage upon you and cast a few crumbs your way.

Uh-oh...someone better tell the DUmmies that there's actually (gasp!) BRIDGES that connect Staten Island to both NJ (at least 3 I can think of) and Brooklyn...I should know. When Scoobie and I went to NYC last Thanksgiving, we went to Staten Island (she grew up there for a while as a child) and we actually took the, oh, what was that famous bridge again???
OH YEAH--THE ****ING VERRAZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE. Free one way, $13 toll the other. You know, at the time the longest suspension bridge in the world? Where the NYC Marathon was supposed to start on Sunday?
