Hurricane Sandy as 'super storm': Is climate change a factor?
As Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Eastern seaboard — laden with predictions of drenching rains, fierce winds, snow and extensive damage — some scientists are pointing out ways that climate change might be influencing hurricanes.
No single weather event, be it drought, snowfall or hurricane, is caused by climate change, climatologists say. Rather, climate change amplifies the intensity or duration of extreme weather, akin to “putting hurricanes on steroids,†writes Amanda Staudt, a climate scientist for the National Wildlife Federation, an environmental advocacy group.
“The answer to the oft-asked question of whether an event is caused by climate change is that it is the wrong question,†writes Kevin E. Trenberth, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. “All weather events are affected by climate change because the environment in which they occur is warmer and moister than it used to be.â€
Hurricane Sandy poses several threats. Vast and slow-moving, it is expected to pour drenching rains and unleash powerful winds in the Northeast over a protracted period, perhaps several days.

Of course it's climate change. Everything is climate change. :mental:

9. It's very rare to get severe hurricanes this late in the year. It may be due to the warming of the
Atlantic Ocean. Global warming will effect water temp. and route of Gulf stream. I would think that would make the season for hurricanes longer and cause them to be fiercer. That is a scary thought. Too bad right wingers can't understand the concept.
Yeah shame on us for not wanting to raise taxes so we can save mother earf.
Seriously if climate change was really such a serious issue would Al Gore fly all over the globe telling us how carbon is killing us?

This is all George W. Bush's fault.

Last I'd heard, the weather liars were having trouble keeping Sandy so much as a Cat 1. It kept shrinking back to a pissant tropical storm on 'em.

No.
-
Every year the Chicken Littles have been predicting bigger and stronger hurricanes due to global warming. Every year they have been wrong.
-
Sandy is a large, disorganized storm, buffeted by bad luck (high tides) as it smashes into a dip of arctic air in the gulf stream. It is a hybrid storm, and it is a rare occurrence, but really... I don't believe the resultant damage will be any more severe than usual.
I also believe that if it does plow into the Appalachians as forecast, that the storm will rapidly degrade.
Sure, there will be squalls, wind, and rain - and there will be power outages and blocked roads, but nothing more than the same sort of results any large Nor'easter is capable of delivering.

Supposedly, the winds are going to strengthen to 90 mph or so, today. :runaway:

Oh, and DUmmies? October/November hurricanes? Yeah, not so uncommon as you might expect. Enjoy:

You must have watched NBC News last night?
I was laughing my ass off at them hyping the storm so as to make Obama look good. It was RE-dick-que-lous.
....and then leading you to believe they were giving you live reports from the beaches of the N.C. Outer Banks.... :lmao:....reporter was making her report in bright sunshine when it was already dark 150 miles inland... :lmao:....but that's alright, The DUmmies bought it.... :lmao:
They don't just think people are stupid.....they know it.

The DUmmies seem to have forgotten the time of year the events in movie The Perfect Storm ocurred.

But this flies in the face of their super-heated oceans because of GW theory - so obviously, history is lying.

Someone asked a woman in the grocery store the other day about why she was buying 5 gallons of milk. "In case the power goes out we have plenty" Then she replied "no" to the question about her having a generator to keep all that milk cold if it does go out. Did I mention that this area is probably going to go for Obama? :rotf:

I wonder if she bought some candles so she wouldn't have to watch TV in the dark if the power goes out.

The problem is that she obviously does not read DU. If she did she would have known to follow the advice of the great and wise nads on what milk to buy.

1. Hurricanes in the Atlantic have occured in every month of the year "hurricane season" is just the time of the year when they are most likely.
2. October is still hurricane season, though it's very late in the season.
3. This storm is far less powerful than the 1930s era storm that hit Massachussettes and New England late in the year.
4. While this is a major wind and rain event, the news media has hyped it to epic proportions. Hurricanes similar to this one form every few years in the Atlantic.
Too bad DUmmies won't read this.

I woke up this morning to a weather report already downplaying this storm. It's barely a Cat 1.

Well this guy won't take that as good news. He was ready.

That's exactly what I heard. These mongoloids (and the Blamestream® media BIRM) will just keep trying to blow it up into the worstest. most destrucivest storm ever, so the Lightbringer can ride to the rescue, part the skies, tee off from the ladies tee and save the planet.
F :censored: in' imbeciles.

Well, duh.....how else are you going to justify extorting taxes out of the great unwashed. We 'tupid, remember?

This is all George W. Bush's fault.
I feel that it is Al Gore's fault for not doing enough to warn us of the potential dangers of man-made global warming.

"Super storm?"
It's a Cat 1.

9. It's very rare...
So, in other words: these things happen even without Global Whining.

I flipped around the TV channels this morning. The ABC, NBC and CBS morning shows were all calling this a "Super Storm" or "The Perfect Storm" ....blah-blah-blah. They're setting it up so Obama can be the hero.....if he fails as he usually does....it's over. :lmao:
I feel for those that have to suffer through the storm but hey, you do what you have to do.....take care of yourself first and then go help others.

SHAME on you Sparky for pulling THAT out of the hat! DUmmies can't be bothered with things like that. That would cut into their time of reading what their compatriots are telling them!!
Some of them have actually SEEN PICTURES of the Atlantic Ocean and they KNOW what they're talking about dammit! How dare you.

I'm shocked at the absence of survival tips from nutcase nadin.
She's an expert in hurricane precautions, and I expected an avalanche of pro tips from San Diego, guiding her little clutch of DUmpmonkeys through the hazards of this killer storm.
I'm also expecting the crazy bald dwarf to explain how this storm has been caused by a combination of American industrial pollution and radiation leaks in Japan.
-
I've not checked this campfire for input from gNads, but if she doesn't "weigh" in on it wearing her meteorologist and survivalist hats, no one will know what to do.
-
Seems that years ago, only actual hurricanes recieved a name.
Now days, anything that can blow a piece of paper across the field, gets a name.
For this reason, some people are convinced it's the fault of Gorebullsh** Wormining.

Climate change? No way. Media over-hype? Abso****ingloutely. I heard it breathlessly refered to as the worst storm to hit the US since Katrina. So at 20 after 3 this morning I woke up everyone in the house screaming GIVE ME A EFFING BREAK. IT'S BARELY A CATAGORY 1, YOU FREAKIN MORONS!!!!!! at the TV.
I must be a brave soul. I was out in it Thursday evening and Friday morning with the AC guy working on my system. My part involved keeping his electronics dry in the wind and rain. To us it was nothing.

Same happened with me pretty much all day yesterday. If I could have reached through the tv and strangled every single monitor reader from the Weather Channel all the way to national broadcasters for the way they scared my children, I would have.
I must be a brave soul... To us it was nothing.
To those of us that don't rely on hype and ratings for our daily bread, it's just another crappy, mid fall weather event. I've been through nor'easters that were much worse and didn't get nearly the hype.

After the BP oil spill, the midwest floods, the tornados, the economy, no budgets, no plans and Benghazi they need to make Obama look like he's actually in charge of something.

Looking at radar imagery, it seems the hurricane has been decimated by the cold nor'easter air - so I flipped on The Weather Channel, and one of their Global Warming talking heads is telling us how even though there is (no/soon wont be any) hurricane anymore, that it doesn't matter, its still a megastorm of doom. :whatever:
As I said yesterday, even though the storm is huge, it isn't stable, and it is going to collapse. it seems its already falling apart, and it hasn't actually hit land yet.
Again, it isn't going to dissolve into nothing, but it will behave like a typical nor'easter - wind gusts, rain, and snow at higher altitudes. The only wildcard is it is hitting during high tide, which is resulting in coastal flooding.

All that MSM hype gone to waste.........and Obama was going to get so much mileage out of it.

All that MSM hype gone to waste.........and Obama was going to get so much mileage out of it.
It isn't surprising, the MSM & Team Obama have run out of opportunities for The Lightbringer to shine. Anyway, the apparent collapse of Sandy isn't unexpected - A typical nor'easter simply isn't compatible with a hurricane.
Though I have the feeling that many on DU were hoping for some real-life apocalypse porn - namely the arctic hurricanes from the movie The Day After Tomorrow.
Too bad, primitives.
-
So, the megastorm of doom doesn't kill anyone, and property damage is far from catastrophic?
What happens then?
Easy! The jug-eared muslim gets credit for managing what would have otherwise been an unprecedented disaster.
Now, second possibility - what if the megastorm of doom floods and damages billions of dollars of property?
What happens then?
Easy! The jug-eared Kenyan gets credit for preventing a Katrina-like disaster.
It could have been so much worse without the steady hand of the muslim messiah.

In this area she probably did. I think I am the only one that pays in something other than EBT anymore in that store.

I drove to work tonight. 30-35 mph winds, gusts maybe to 50.
I dealt with far worse during the ice storm in 2008, the wind storm in 2010, and Irene last year.
But what really got me going was eating breakfast this morning and the idiots on GMA were talking about, "How to talk to your kids about the storm."
That got me into a snarkier than usual mood when the owner of the breakfast place and I were chuckling to ourselves and I said, "Yeah, here's how you do it--mommy is gonna light a fire in the fireplace, you kids'll eat some popcorn and play some games, and maybe daddy'll have to go outside and cut up a tree."
Oh, that would have made a liberal's head explode, cutting up the trees of Mother Gaia and BURNING them! Oh, the horror!
