Title: I found a dog
Post by: RobJohnson on October 18, 2012, 12:46:02 AM
I came home from work and this little guy was hiding out on my front patio.

I started a Facebook thread.

Everyone told me that I need a dog and to keep it.

I wanted to go through the proper channels as I knew someone was misssing a pet so I had plans on calling animal control in the morning.

The dog followed me all over the yard, it was all dirty, muddy and dusty from some rain we had.

I provied the dog with a couple hours of companionship outside and some hydration, he was really thirsty. I found some dog food from when I dog sat, and he was also very hungry. I figured he would be outside all night. I left the outside lights on to keep the bad dogs away and my .40 S&W stun gun helps...we have coyotes

After a long and at times very inappropriate facebook thread a coworker sends me a text, she had a friend that lost a dog. His name was sparky.

I let the dog in the house. I said "Sparky"

His ears pearch up...and jumps up on the sofa, laying between my back and the rear cushion...he was no longer scared.

The dog owners just left my house. The daughter had been very upset. The dog accidently got out this morning and had been missing all day. They had been looking all day and putting up posters.

Several people on Facebook told me to just keep the dog as they are expensive....there is no way I was going to risk keeping someone else's pet. That is not simply fair to the other people, if there was any other people...

It ended well.

It was an awesome dog.

Just keep it? Isn't it sad the entitlement that seems to e getting so engrained in our culture? You did the right thing. Always assume a well fed and taken care of animal(overlook new dirt) is someone's pet and treat them as such.

God bless our helpless creatures.  I am soooo happy the little guy got back to where he belongs.

Thanks from me and from dogs and dog lovers everywhere.  I admit to loving them a lot and would go out of my way as well to find the owner of a lost pup.  They pine for those they love just as we do.  What a happy, happy ending!

Agreed on both counts.

Rob, that's awesome!  I think all of us know that feeling from some time in our lives when a beloved pet goes missing.  It's awful, and the worst of it is the unknown.  Eaten?  Run over?  Adopted?  Stolen?  Suffering?  You did such the right things.  I applaud you.

You did great, Rob! Such a happy ending!

Be careful though, in this case it worked out, but there are horrible people out there who use dogs as "bait" for dog fights, and if you put an ad out there you always want to make sure it's the actual owner and ask them to provide pictures and other proof.

I can see, after we're in the townhouse, going to a local shelter and getting a dog.

The pooch didn't have a nametag, with phone number?? I hope the owners got him one...

Exactly.  It's just like finding a wallet full of money. It's not mine to keep unless no one claims it.

I just happend to have a co-worker that had a friend that was missing a dog....my co worker called me, asked for permission to give them my phone number, and it was a done deal. A very happy ending.

I was pretty happy when my co worker sent me a text message picture of the same dog that was in my yard, I then let the dog inside the house so he did not get away.

The dog just had a bath, she let him out for a minute before she realized a gate was left opened.

Accidents happen.

After the dog greeted the owners, it came back over to me and stood by my leg. I think it wanted to stay.

Maybe he wanted to pee.

Rob,

Get a damn dog. Go to the SPCA and rescue one. It's easy to see that you're a little sad that the dog left.

 :fuelfire:

But you definitely did the right thing.

I have enough on my plate right now. I love dogs. I love kids. I just don't need my own right now.

Been there, too.
My last passed a bit over a year ago.
There is a time and a place for them.
You'll know when the time comes, to look for another.
Far better to wait until you're ready.

Me too.

But in response to jty, sometimes when you live in a rural area (as I do), said rural areas become a dumping ground for heartless assholes who think they're doing the dog/cat/whatever a favor and simply open the car door and deposit the critter outdoors to fend for itself.

Most of these end up dead whether through starvation, or predation, or usually being hit by a car.

In some stupid, mindless way these people think they're being humane when, in fact, they're being cruel. Pisses me off when I see this kind of stuff.

Our second dog came to us in this way. She was emaciated, tick-ridden, filthy, hungry, thirsty, and needed a spay. No collar, no ID, it was pretty clear she and her siblings and the dam had been dumped. We found homes or otherwise turned over the others to animal control (the dam wound up being adopted by a family in the KC area) and we have the smartest, bestest pupper EVAH as a result.

Two of the cats I had were "throwaways" like you've described, Eupher.  One was tossed out of a car window (at least they stopped the car -- jerks ) and the other was just left to fend for himself when the owner moved away.  How people can be so cruel, I just can't imagine.  But both cats were loved and taken care of for the rest of their lives.

Back in Illinois when we lived out in the country (I'm no city kid) friends and family would often find a cardboard box full of puppies or kittens along side a road on top of many other strays left behind like you mentioned. My grandmother had an outdoor shed dedicated to a few stray cats, she would lock them up at night and let them out during the day. They had plenty of food, shelter and heat in the winter.

My mother still has a 17 year old cat that she rescued as a kitten. We caught the mother & father with live traps, paid to have them fixed, and turned them back loose....a neighbor had way too many cats...so we fixed the problem... :-) We had the blessing of a deputy sheriff. The lady would not provide proper food and water, and eventually legal action was taken against her.  We had a local dairy farmer that would take all strays to keep mice out of his grain, yet the cats would find their way back, even miles away.

Also during the foreclosures many people simply took off and left their pets here in Nevada, pretty sad. The good news is Nevada makes animal abuse a FELONY....but of course if you hit your wife in the face, that would just be a serious misdemeanor...  :thatsright:
