I already know how this is going to end, and that I'm in a tiny minority here, but anyway.
Should the DUmpster be made a closed forum, accessible to members only?
I wish it were, but that's about as likely to happen as Barack Milhous bringing the price of gasoline down to thirty-nine cents a gallon by election day. It's just not going to happen.
I was all over Skins's island this morning, desperately trying to find primitive campfires DUmpster-worthy, and coming up dry.
The primitives on Skins's island used to be a Comstock Lode of hilarity and laughs, but it looks like the mine's petering out.
This of course is because the primitives are aware of the DUmpster, and afraid to say their primitive things, lest they be quoted here, for the illumination and amusement of decent and civilized people.
They've become more inhibited than an old lady with haemerrhoids wearing a too-tight corset.
It's because they know they're being observed, and are nervous about showing their true selves.
Life was much easier when it was just us watching the primitives.
Now it's a case of the primitives watching us watching the primitives.
-
I said "not sure." Here's why--yes, it inhibits the expression of the primitives. But, it also shows the world (moderates and such) just how batshit-crazy they are.
-
The genie is already out of the bottle.

The genie is already out of the bottle.
Yeah, and I still kick myself for having helped create the problem.
Back when conservativecave was still new and nobody heard of us, I made it a specific point to attract the notice of the primitives, so as to increase the number of "guests" reading the site. I thought it'd be a good thing, having lots and lots of people reading here.
Ooops.
-
I would prefer it myself, the only drawback would be that potential new members who might be attracted to sign up because of this forum wouldn't know it was here.
However, the other side of the coin is if the admins here want the site to be more than just The Dumpster forum (which is the main attraction), then by closing the forum to the public they could focus on trying to attract new members via enhancing the other forums. Of course, as an admin they have to actually be engaged and want to make the effort, which seems unlikely.

I vote yes. It would drive the dump monkeys crazy.
-
I voted no. I love being called out. (waves to Omaha Steve)
The DUmmies are boring because the election has become all consuming. Not because we are watching.
Frank. Wait till after the election to contemplate such things. Win or lose, the DUmmies will revert to their varied and entertaining campfires. Trust me on this.
Primitives will be :panic: around the bonfires soon enough.
-
I vote yes. It would drive the dump monkeys crazy.
Agreed. I think closing it FORCES them to sign up here.

How long would it take to ferret them out--I kinda doubt they'd sign up with theit DUmp names, after all . . .
-
Grasswire, OS and Nads will lose their minds. Oh what fun those threads will be on the closing of the DU forum.
Do it until DOTY is announced (and the election is over). Like the Oscars it should be a secret ballot and process.
PLEASE!!!!

They will be signing up in droves. Make the post count 200 for them to see the forum.
Oh what fun we will have!!
:-)
-
I say no because it lets them see that people know just how bat crazy retarded they are. In all reality, the DUmp is a gift with all the stupidity they have. Closing it to them will not give them the chance to see that were are calling them out on it -> I know them seeing it drives them crazy.
-
I voted yes, they come here and still don't understand what they read (e.g. "barack milhous), so I vote to close it.
-
Are all these Dumpster threads about the Democratic Underground? Why do you all like that place? Those people are nuts.

Pure comedy gold.
-
Not "no" but "hell no."
-
I voted "no," for the simple reason is that I abhor secrecy when it comes to expressing one's unadulterated, common-sense views, and subjecting them to others. And, frankly, I get a kick out of knowing that some scumsucker's views are being exposed to the world as idiots, not just laughed at in relative secrecy.
While the "well is running dry," suffice to say that DU is not the only loonybin in the world. Why not do the same for Kos, for instance? In the past, I've thought of starting threads on them, breaking down their arguments, then exposing the idiot commenters. I even have a "tip jar" image that would be hilarious.
That's just one thought.
@Dori: Because we love to laugh at stupidity, and even more fun that they notice it. It allows us to undermine their intelligence in good humor.
-
I voted "not sure" because yes, it would drive them nuts, but I love the fact they can come here and see what logic and reason looks like.
But now, driving them batty, having them sign up, and reach 200 posts to view it would be nice. I think many would leave before that happens.
-
I'm in two minds.
I think that the DUmmies have become more aware of us since the introduction of the new regime - back in the good old days a post mentioning us in anything more than the most oblique way would be sent down the memory hole faster than the speed of light...whereas in the new days of community standards they're allowed to talk about us.
However I think that there are other reasons for the decline in quality. First being the election (as noted above); the other is the slow purging of long-term members who don't fit the perfect standards of the DUmp Inquisition. We all got to hear about the great ghey purge and similar, but there's a slower drip-drip of members who offend one particular privileged group...this makes their entire discourse more boring.

I was about to say the same thing. It's their decline causing the lack of quality. Drop the numbers and there just isn't as much insane to go around. We already have a few DUmmie moles here. Whenever I get nasty towards them they can't resist letting me know.

I vote yes. It would drive the dump monkeys crazy.
My main point--although it's not going to win my argument, of course--is that the primitives were funnier when they didn't know they were being observed.
Take, for example, the sparkling old dude confessing that his trophy wife makes him use the bathroom in the basement so he doesn't stink up the bathrooms on the first and second floors--or his posting of photographs of himself in a pink tutu. He did things like that when he wasn't aware he was being watched.
Now he's really uptight, and isn't funny any more.
Or the big guy--imagine what would've happened if www.electstevedawes.com suddenly came out of nowhere, from no known direction. That would've really freaked him, having absolutely no idea "something" was coming, and it would've been funnier.
And quite possibly the subway cat would still be posting prolifically.
And perhaps even the hippywife, Mrs. Alfred Packer, would still be around in the cooking and baking forum, providing rich material unbeknownst to her.
People are funnier when they don't know they're being watched.

If I had to post 200 times to read, I would never bother. It would be a shame to lose access to a site that I view every day, but I just wouldn't do it.

I don't think anybody concerned about the DUmpster becoming a closed forum should worry much; it's not going to happen.
It's just wistful thinking on my part, because as a moderator, I like the place to be stocked with plenty of good high-quality inventory, and it's obvious the primitives aren't putting out like they used to, because they know they're being watched by decent and civilized people.
But it's not going to happen; imagine the insurrection if it were tried.
There however exists sort of an alternative--but not likely to be used much--in the closed political forum here, accessible only to members with 1000+ posts. It wasn't created for this purpose, but it is handy for shoving in sensitive primitive campfires where one doesn't want the primitives to know what one knows.
I suppose that's the best possible practical solution.
-
I vote no - search engines do a much better job educating people about primitives if they are able to index the data.
-
Can I vote multiple times from different locations? Democrat Underground tells me I should be allowed to do so.
Why are you disenfranchising me?
-

You know, that gave me an idea, although again it's probably just wistful thinking; if it were to be done, there'd be mutiny.
Perhaps the nominations and voting for the Top DUmmies of 2012 should be a closed process, invisible to the lurking primitives, open only to long-time members with 1000+ posts or something. These are the people most likely to be knowledgeable about the primitives, and the ballot would present only high-quality candidates.
(The winners of course would be publicly displayed.)
There's always been a problem with primitive riff-raff, the lumpenunterprimitiven, the faceless lynch mob, being on the ballot, confusing readers. As Mr. Wiggum will confirm, sometimes one of the award's bestowed upon a primitive about whom little or nothing is known. It's a pain then, when one has to write the award.
About two or three times each year, I've been almost compelled to write an award thusly:
Congratulations to primitive blahblahblah, #14 Top DUmmie of 20xx!
I know nothing about this obscure primitive, and there doesn't seem a whole lot of material.
So anyway, congratulations to primitive blahblahblah, #14 Top DUmmie of 20xx!
But being a nice guy, I try to do better.
There'll be a new rule for nominations this year which should ameliorate the situation somewhat.....that is, if the rule's read.

We're disenfranchising your cat Bob, not you.
-
Can I vote multiple times from different locations?
Not until you're dead.
-
On the fence here . . . yes, it could be worth experimenting with this idea some after the elections are over next month.
-
I believe they will eventually return with some quality material, right now they are having to adjust to what is just unthinkable to them, the country does not believe as they do and soon they will see and hear the words President elect Romney.
It has left them in an abyss for the moment as they knew, just knew that O was inevitably going to be reelected and in a second term without worry of campaigns that was when all the goodies would finally be delivered.
In time the vile evil that is their soul will rebound and the crazy will be back.
I also think that knowing so many of us walk freely among them has them unsettled as well.
The me first paranoia of a liberal mind is in play too I suspect.
Really, what fun would it be to post the absolute idiocy that is symbolic with the name atman if he can`t see it.
DUmbass McGrath has had plenty of chances to post here and just lurks, doubt that would change since he is such a pansy ass coward so would hate for him to miss out seeing his sheer stupidity displayed for all.
-

It's not going to happen anyway, and in all honesty, if it were put to a vote, I'd regretfully have to vote "no" myself.
As Splashdown said, the genie's already out of the bottle, and can't be shoved back in.
Part of which is my own damned fault, four years ago trying so hard to get lurkers here.
I'm just engaging in wistful thinking here; as some have pointed out, they mostly read instead of comment, and we don't want to cut them out, as they're us too.
-

I voted no until I read this.
You make a strong and reasonable argument.
-
You make a strong and reasonable argument.
Whoa. That's a first.
But anyway, those who say "no" don't have to worry. The DUmpster's NOT going to become a closed forum.
I brought up the issue because I'm frustrated that the primitives, knowing they're being watched, aren't putting out like they used to, and so it's getting harder and harder to stock the shelves here with quality inventory.
It's just wishful thinking on my part.
