Title: HOME-DESPOT rant
Post by: JohnnyReb on October 11, 2012, 05:05:18 PM
So, some ass stole some of the electrical covers from the old home place I've been remodeling. I was already on that side of town so I went in  Home-Depot....they had white plastic wall socket covers marked $2.99 each...with the 8% sales tax because it's in the city limits, the 10 covers I needed would have been over $32.00.... hell no I ain't paying that. So, I go across town to the place that extended me credit to build my first house 44 years ago this passed January. I bought 10 white metal wall socket covers with little thingies on the screws so fat fingers don't lose them, 8 single pole light switch covers, 2 double pole light switch covers, two 3-way light switches and 6 new door stops for.......$32.00 plus a few cents change.

It pays to buy from your local people usually.

I found out when I went to Lowes, that it's sometimes cheaper to ask if they have a contractor's package of things like that.   It's sad that the receptacles, and switches are sometimes cheaper than the covers.

And while they're sold with the union label, they're mostly made in China. Just try to find a part made in  the USA.

The nearest Home Despot is the better part of a hundred miles away, but there are three Lowe's within an hour of me.  Their pricing on electrical components for household wiring is just weird, some are dirt cheap and others are ridiculous.  They do have the 10% discount for active and retired military though, which neutralizes (And then a bit) the stiff sales taxes that apply in the towns where they're located.

Yeah, I find that to be the case in my area. There's one Lowe's in town and I frequent them most of the time due to the 10% military discount - which is almost a wash when you factor in the sales tax. (Nine times out of ten I have to ORDER what I want -- these guys don't stock much here.)

There used to be a Sutherland's in town but they went out of business a few months back. I suspect the Lowe's (which is pretty new) had something to do with that.

Westlake (Ace) hardware is frightfully expensive, but then again, they've got to pay the army of guys they have walking around with Secret Service radio Bluetooth thingies in their ears pestering you the second you walk in the door. And typically, when I DO need help, the bastards are nowhere to be found.  :whatever:

doesn't hurt to ask if they take military ID either.  I get all kinds of discounts using mine.
