Title: missing in action
Post by: franksolich on October 04, 2012, 09:34:07 PM
Hey, I'm missing two of my good buds.

One is JohnnyReb, who's been here every day since he first joined conservativecave; he hasn't been around since September 29, 2012, and I'm worried.  Has anyone heard from him, why he's gone?

Damn.  He's a really good friend.

And then there's the crusty old curmudgeon, John C Calhoun, who hasn't shown up since February 2, 2009; I suddenly remembered I hadn't seen him for a while.

Anybody know what's up with that?

Yes i have noticed that Allosaurus has not been around either. As someone once told me, people will go off and do their own thing for awhile. Sometimes they come back and sometimes they don't.
I think it is important to have at least one personal contact outside of here. If someone does not show up, someone else might know why and fill us in.

Frank, have you tried Emailing them????

Well, no, JohnnyReb is one of my best friends here, a personal hero of mine.

As much as one male can love another male without being perverted, I love JohnnyReb.

He was coming here every single day, bar none, since the first day he signed up.

JohnnyReb's great; a real southern gentleman.

John C Calhoun, I dunno how I missed him for so long.....

Don't nobody get me wrong here--I like everybody on conservativecave equally.

Everybody here's colorful, interesting, and distinctive; we aren't any faceless lynch mob like the primitives.

I like everybody equally.

That being said, the members here I'd like the most to meet in person have always been JohnnyReb, NHSparky, and thundley4.  They're great.

I don't like to play favorites, because I got no favorites here.  I like everybody equally, and if anybody wants to know what I really think about them, I pull no punches.

NHSparky is awesome; a true Renaissance man, a paragon of maturity whose level I could never hope to attain, but strive for anyway.  One time, maybe about a year ago, I commented "My God" to something (I forget what; it had nothing to do with NHSparky), after which NHSparky immediately came on and commented in return, "Here."

He had no idea how appropriate that actually was.

No way.  Not at all.

We all tend to admire people who have qualities we ourselves don't but wish we did.

You, sir, are one Hell of an impressive person, and I mean that enthusiastically.

Yeah, yeah, sure, sure, you might see yourself as "just another blue collar down in rural Illinois, nothing disctinctive," but I strenuously disagree.

You're steady; you're sturdy, you're steadfast.

And your dry wit is awesome.  I don't think you have to present your wit; I think it comes out naturally, sometimes without even you realizing it.  Damn, you're good.  We're approximately the same age; if I had a friend such as you when I was growing up (don't get me wrong; I had good friends in childhood, admirable people), I would've been enriched enormously.

You don't do it here, but I suspect in real life, you'd kick my ass when I deserved it kicked, and there wouldn't be any hard feelings about it.

You're much more than what you imagine yourself to be, thundley.

Sir.

Oh now, madam.

Perceptions of others are always evolving--as they very well should--but I suspect my perceptions of the most-senior members here (say, those who joined before March 6, 2008; about the first 200 members of conseervativecave) are pretty much accurate.

Members newer than that, I'm still getting used to.

You know I love you with passion and ardor, but I'm not used to you yet.

Give it time.

Question--the emoticon that Gina used is called "bigbird."  Would a President Romney cut it?

Well, you know you're there somewhere, sir, pretty high ranking.

I like all members here equally.

It's kind of like being a parent with several children.  The parent loves them all equally, one no more no less than the other, but at the same time the parent's more attracted to certain characteristics of one child or another.

The reason one has to be careful about one's perceptions of other members is because sometimes the real person and the internet persona can be two entirely different things.

I'm thinking of John C Calhoun here, who enjoyed a reputation for being a crusty grouchy pissy old curmudgeon; that was his internet persona.

However, I happen to know that in real life, John C Calhoun is of a nature and habits that make even Santa Claus look like Ebenezer Scrooge; a great guy, a friend to all, as generous with his heart as he is with his pocket-book.

It's all good, frank.  I know quite a bit more about your life because of your great stories than you do about mine so that's certainly fair  :)

There's a certain, uh, problem with that, though.

While in those short stories, other than the added primitive-elements, I accurately show my life (again, other than the primitive elements), in blunt truth it's only a minuscule part of this everyday life.  It's all true, other than the primitivia in it, but it's only a scrap, a fragment.

I dunno what impression I give of myself here, but I suspect some of it is the impression of utter confidence.

And yes, I really am that way, utterly confident.

It's that, or to be afraid of everything and everybody.  There's no middle-ground.

But at the same time, all those around me in real life are always nervous, fingernail-biting nervous.  Not nervous about me, but nervous for me.  "He doesn't have the slightest idea of what's going on, and he's going to innocently get into trouble....."

It goes way back, to the beginning of life.

Well now, you know that I have to withhold judgement in your case--along with the cases of dutch508, longview, Reality vs DU, Skul, and other members here current and former residents of Nebraska--because I'm too biased.

All I can say is that you're all top-notch, world-class, first-rate people, which is my honest and truthful perception, but again it might, or might not, be biased because of the Nebraska connection.

I'm really concerned that no one has heard anything from JohnnyReb.

I went back and read his last several posts and there was nothing to indicate him being gone for any reason, upset with anyone here, or family reasons for being off line.

I hope it's just that he has been busy, not that anything bad has happened.

Isn't there anyone who has contact with him in real life?
