Title: Model Rockets...
Post by: DefiantSix on October 03, 2012, 01:52:23 PM
My son Joshua, has been getting into building and flying model rockets (the Estes kits) in a big way. Back when I was a kid, they had a rocket that packed a 110-size film camera into a nosecone/payload section. Well, I thought the modern version of something like that would be a fun thing to add to his repertoire, but nobody makes anything like that anymore; commercially, anyway. So, it looks like I'm gonna buy a stock rocket kit, and modify the nose cone to install one of these into it, as a gift for Christmas this year.

What about starting with a rocket that has a payload bay?  http://www.instructables.com/id/Model-Rocket-with-horizontal-HD-video-keychain-cam/

Kinda what I had in mind.  A payload bay like THIS (http://www.estesrockets.com/rockets/kits/skill-2/003227-loadstartm-ii) ought to give me enough space to mount the cam without too many odd curves to have to adapt new parts to.  I'm still planning on arranging a "periscope" system in the side of the bay, in order to give the camera the best view possible.

Tell me about it.  Getting my boy involved with these has brought back some fond memories of when MY dad got me started with model rockets. Which of course reminds me of how much I miss that man.  :bawl:

Update:

I just bought the camera for doing this over the weekend.  So far, we're on schedule for a Christmas launch date. :II:

Will do.  The camera shipped yesterday, and FexEx says they'll be delivered on the 30th.  Now to get the rocket to put it in.

(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/happy.gif) Good for you!

Have you tried Hobby Surplus (http://=http://www.hobbysurplus.com/rockets.asp)?

They have Estes (http://www.hobbysurplus.com/search_result.asp?CATEGORY=Rockets&MANUFACTURER=Estes+Rockets) rockets and kits and motors.

One Christmas, I bought one for the neighbor's daughter (she was of the very bright variety) that already had a camera mounted in it.
