Being a retired military member, I do the bulk of my shopping at the base commissary. Prices are better, and since the employees aren't unionized, they don't have the freedom to be sullen, uninterested and rude towards their customers. However, I do occasionally have to run into the local Giant to pick up an item or two. I always do the self-checkout, so as to limit my exposure to the union nasties behind the register.
Earlier this evening, I had to run into Giant to get some distilled water for my floor steamer and some fresh apples for hubby's lunch. Lo and behold, on the front door of the store was a big sticker that said "UNION SHOP", along with the information about UCFW Local 400 out of Landover, MD.
Now, Virginia being a right to work state, I stopped by the manager's desk before leaving the store, and explained to him that I was surprised to see this sticker, seeing as union shops are illegal in Virginia. I further explained that I was certain that he wasn't trying to intimidate any potential employees by posting incorrect information, so I would drop by tomorrow to ascertain whether or not he had removed the sign. I explained that if he didn't, I would have no choice but to report him to the National Right To Work Legal Defense Foundation, an organization that LOVES to take on stores that try to force workers to join unions, even when the law prohibits them from doing so.
So, I'll go back tomorrow and see what his decision was. Just thought you would want to know that some of us fight against union intimidation tactics every bit as strongly as you fight for them.

I, for one, anticipate the news you bring to us on this tomorrow.

Grocery store chains love to keep thier employees all herded together in the union. I don't really understand it, but Food World hounded me for months when I was seventeen to join the UFCW. I never really understood why. It was a part time job as a teenager to keep gas in the car tank really.

Yep, and here in Virginia, Giant has been caught a couple of times telling employees that they had to join the union, which is not true. To me, that sticker on the door is nothing more than an intimidation tactic.
