So , this doctor was being interviewed on the radio about his new book, and he makes the comment that half the people that come to see a doctor have nothing physically wrong with them, that the pain or digestive distress etc is caused by something wrong in their personal lives. And of course, this is why more women than men turn up at a doctor's office.
What's with these guys who think if they can't figure out what's going on, it means nothing is happening? It's the same kind of willlful ignorance that once taught that the appendix and tonsils were useless organs!
The doc's right on the money. It's all in their heads.
Really, I'm surprised "hypochondria" isn't something that gets one a first-class ticket aboard the social security disability gravy train, but I suppose it's only a matter of time.

1. And look how long it took doctors to admit that menstrual cramps were NOT psychosomatic.

2. Women with life threatening cardiac problems have been patted on the head and offered Valium instead of an EKG that would have turned up the real problem.
If they survived the trip to the ER, then I'd get them. By that time they were deathly ill and many survived to be cardiac cripples because some damned doctor thought all women were emotional wrecks and couldn't be arsed to do his job.
Doctors like this guy need to be out of medicine.

When I was in SD earlier this year pulling medical coverage for the Officer Candidate School I hung a sign on the Aid Station door that read, "Comfort breeds Cowardice."
There was a discernible drop in people coming to sick call.

I have hypochondria, the doctor gave me a new drug called placebo it seems to be working great. :-)

The DUmmies ought to be experts on it, except that each of the sufferers there is sure they really are sick and that only Obama can save them. Or they're scamming for disability checks...

My grandma who is 98 has been dying of every illness and disease since she was a young adult. The only thing ever wrong with her was she had gallstones and had gallbladder surgery in the 60's or early 70's. When I was diagnosed with Takayasu Arteritis she was 100% positive that she had it too...she didn't.

I'm waiting for a response from the beefy, tattoo-festooned DUmmy mopinko, the reigning queen of hypochondria.

The last I saw of her, she was alleging to have been afflicted by the West Nile Virus.
One assumes she's been afflicted with the East Nile Virus, the North Nile Virus, and the South Nile Virus already.
