Americans should change the way we vote

I guess I make a similar post like this every election season, but there are a lot of ways we could improve the way we vote in America, to make voting more efficient and to make more people vote.

One suggestion I've always loved is mandatory voting. I think maybe its Australia that requires all eligible voters to vote, or pay a small penalty for not voting.

Another is allow voting to go on for at least one whole month, instead of just 12 hours in one day in November. We all know how difficult it can be just to get to the polls and vote, taking off work, trudging through snow, etc. Let the whole month of October or November be for voting.

And of course, crack down on voter fraud and cheating, there's always a way for republicans to cheat and lie and steal the election, they're doing it now in fact.

I vote absentee, and it worries me that my vote will be tossed into the trash by some republican asshole. I can't get to the polls, so I vote by mail.

Voting online should be studied too, or by phone. Getting young folks interested in voting is also important, and registering to vote should be made easier somehow. And don't get me started on the Electoral College.

I believe our current voting practices are archaic, from 150 years ago, and to have the same system in 2012 is just ridiculous, and I believe its kept this way to PREVENT AND SUPPRESS voting. We have a 12 hour window for the whole nation to vote? Thats just stupid, and its unfair too.

the lumpenunterprimitiven at this campfire are of mixed feelings about that, excepting they seem unanimous that election day should be a paid day off.

Hey, Phallusscrapper-

It ain't Republithugs breathlessly racing to court to halt and overturn every common sense law to stop voter fraud/cheating.  Get a clue, you fat-headed ***k.

I agree to some extent about the time off with reservations.   The worker needs to show some how they did in fact vote.   Some of our pollings stations give out small stickers that read --I voted, did you------I use to see them on the hard hats at work worn by the workers that took a few hours off work to vote.   I did get mine a couple times but we just got out of work 2 hours early, or came in late for second shift.     NO, we were not paid for lost time but we not penalised for missing work either.

Then have the Libs never heard of an absentee ballot,  one knows they cannot get off work, be out of state or most any reason one can get one.    Heck I think they will mail them to your house if you are a registered voter.

Why do these people always want to emulate societies that aren't exactly thriving...like Australia?

I like to advocate that everyone else follow our model.  Or not.  I don't really care about other people in the world that much.  They are over there.  I am over here.

mopaul used a lot of words to say what amounts to "I want the US Constitution to be tossed and a new one put in its place."

If we're required to vote, we'll then have to prove that we did to avaoid penalty..... BY SHOWING ID.  Do they ever think their arguments through to the natural conclusions?

One thing they always, but always forget...yes, voting is a right but rights require responsibility. If it's important to you, you'll find a way. I live in a vote by mail state and I actually miss going to the polls.

He should be worried about the lower percentage of Democrats in swing states not regeistering to vote this year. It's either because ACORN isn't helping them enough or some Democrats are pissed off they didn't get their free pony and skittles.

It is like the song by Rush with the lyric "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice."

Um...does he know it's not difficult to register to vote? You can do it online? Print it out and mail it in?

I feel just the opposite from DUmmy mopaul. Voting should be made as difficult as possible. Maybe open the polls from 2 to 4am on Tuesday morning. Low turnout is a good thing. It means fewer of the lazy, stupid, uncaring scum - the democrat base - bothered to show up. I see nothing but bad in a high turnout.
