A friend on FB started the whole "Romney was a draft dodger" thing again.
The thing is, this guy's grandfather was rather well-known. I won't say who it was, but suffice to say I could make a big stink about it.
What do you vets think about Romney having deferments and his mission trip as part of his church duty?

I don't think about it. Don't care. It won't make me more or less likely to vote for him.
"The business of America is business." I want a businessman in the White House, not an anti-business man. A maker, not a taker.

Do they have proof?

What for? its not in dispute that Romney got a deferment for college and another for his Mormon mission. I guess its up those who were in the draft whether that counts as "dodging" or not. Being way to young for that I dont really have an opinion and I think its a non issue since both the GOP and dems are against the draft now.

Ask this person what they think of Clinton dodging the draft, and then ask them what they think of Kerry being a treasonous traitor. An uncle of my wife's tried the same thing, when I asked him those two questions, he shut up and deleted the his thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mitt's number never was called, so even without deferments, he never was going to be drafted.

AFAIC, deferments existed to be taken by those eligible. Unless they were taken by fraud, I don't have a problem.
Alsø: I think I read somewhere that he had such a high lottery number that he wouldn't have been drafted by 1975 or beyond even without deferments (literally, "winning life's lottery", I suppose, but again it was part of the system and complaints should be directed against the Selective Service Administration).
Alsø alsø: I think the military is better off with an all-volunteer force. Recent history hath shewn that if a national crisis arises where a military response is deemed necessary by the citizens, recruiting offices will be overwhelmed with applicants, including old broken veterans like me.

I was in HS and college in the late 60's - early 70's.
Any guy who was in college full time(12 hrs or more), maintained a minimum of a 2.0 each semester, a GPA of a 2.0 or better and stayed in school during the academic year, avoided being drafted. I know, because I was pinned to one who wasn't drafted by following the above.
I remember when the birthdate drawings started and being very very glad I was female. My birthday was in the first 50 every year!

If most people cared about military service or the lack thereof, McCain would be president today.

On a draft card that was a 2S student defferment.
I had a collection of different draft card classifications. I think that if you had one foot bigger than the other one, they had a classification for it.... :-)

Thanks. I feel the same way, I just wanted some feedback from some others.
I'll try the Clinton and Kerry things with him. I really don't want to make a big stink, but I'll just bring it up.

I think it's generally unfortunate that the overall percentage of professional politicians that have military service backgrounds is getting lower with each passing year.
But in no way, shape or form do I consider Romney's deferments as being "draft dodging." By definition, somebody who has dodged the draft was DRAFTED first, then skyed out in response, usually to Canada.
Romney's actions were legal at the time. No harm, no foul.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be taking any advice on who is or who is not a draft dodger from a damn liberal. I would have unfriended that mofo 5 seconds after he posted it. Done with ****ing liberals.

My friend list decreases in number everyday. No sweat.

Jon Kerry said he went to Vietnam where he himself became a war criminal participating in one massive war crime.
The left cheered Kerry.
The left always cheers soldiers who hate America's wars.
Now they want us to hate Rmoney because he didn't sign-up but took a deferment...
...which was totally legal and set-up by dems.
Yet, they want to despise him because he did not serve in a war they call illegal and immoral.
Next up, Rmoney blamed for NOT being a insider trader like so many other Wall St executives.

Most of the politicians of the last generation had service because of WW2. Our military was 11 times bigger than it is now and we only had 40% of the population that we do now.
