A Soviet-era military training jet crashed and burst into flames during an air show in Iowa on Saturday, killing the pilot in an accident that occurred near a busy interstate highway, authorities said.
Corporal Jacob Pries of the Davenport Police Department said the accident involving the L-39 jet, developed in the former Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s, occurred about 1:30 p.m. during the annual Quad-City Air Show.
The jet was flying in formation shortly before it crashed alongside the I-80 highway. It plowed into a field near the Eastern Iowa Industrial Center in northern Davenport, Fries said.
This was the first act to start the two day show. The crash could of been much worse, as there is a busy truck stop with lots of fuel very close to the crash site. On top of the fact the plane crashed right next to the interstate I-80.

I pray for the pilot's family and all others involved. Very sad end indeed.

I agree Undies.
I talked to a park ranger that seen it happen. He was still pretty shaken up.

It could ne coincidence but there were two of these planes At the Offutt AFB show last weekend and they didn't fly on Saturday because the weather was bad and the show was cancelled for that day and the ydidn't fly on Sunday. If it was one of the two that was there and it was a mechanical failure then the possiblity of it crashing last week would have been worse. Base housing is all around the base and then there are seveal businesses and the highway that runs along the south side of the base . No good way to go down in a lot of the area.

Sad to hear. The L-39 has a pretty good safety record, as it was built based on the McDonnel Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. I could tell a story or two.

It's been reported that this same type of plane killed two people in NV and also in another state at airshows in the past year.
