Kodak set to quit camera film and photo paper business
Source: BBC News

Debt-struck photography pioneer Kodak says it may sell off its still-camera film and photo paper divisions.

The firm has already stopped making digital cameras as part of efforts to reduce its losses after filing for bankruptcy protection in January.

It has also been trying to raise funds by selling off more than 1,100 digital imaging patents.

It had originally planned to announce a buyer last week, but said "discussions continue" and a deal might not happen.

6. They didn't see the writing on the wall in 2000 when HP introduced their first digital camera

they didn't see the writing on the wall when their Japanese competitors packed their cameras with features at select price points to undermine their pathetic designs.

They didn't see the writing on the wall when film sales plummeted in 2004 with the onslaught of $99 4MP cameras.

They were blind to technology as it passed them by, and here we are, the end of Kodak.

I sit with a picture of my then baby daughter sleeping with her dog in 1993 on my desk. And on the back barely perceptible is the word Kodak. The picture is bright and crisp.

My beautiful daughter is now 23, but the picture will remain forever, unlike Kodak. Blind to progress.

8. kind of like the '70s-80's when people were buying fuel efficient Japanese cars

and US manufacturers kept turning out big gas guzzlers.

1. Tries to understand DainBramaged's guarded response to your perfectly reasonable analogy.
 2. Reads both posts twice. Still doesn't get it.

No way the DUmp can acknowledge the role of unions in destroying American businesses.  Just as high taxes and Obamacare costs play NO part.   ::) ::) ::)

In the 1950's it wasn't "Get your camera" it was "Get your Kodak".

If unions had their way, JOHN DEERE would probably still be making 2 horse wagons.

That's funny, I bought my first digital camera (Olympus) in 1997. Those DUches sure are on top of just about everythin.

I owned my first digital in 99. It was an Office Depot markdown clearence. There was an article in Wired back in the late 90's predicting the death of film within 3 product cycles, which would have been easily 10 years ago.
Momma is a big fan of Kodak Easyshare cameras. They last a few years then start to fall apart. They take good Pics for her use with enough features to make her happy. The product is fine, the problem lies with the company management. They killed Kodak.

Agreed that is a big part of Kodak's decline.  Thought I read somewhere that Kodak actually invented the digital camera back in the mid 70's but management made couple bad decisions about it.

Being from western New York, I've heard a lot about Kodak, then in the mid 90's spent a couple years trimming trees all over Rochester.  Couldn't believe how everywhere you go in that city, there is a huge complex that was involved with Kodak.  It was impressive, and that was even when they were starting their decline.  Must have been an amazing company during it's prime.  Sad to have seen it fall to this point.

At least the UAW memebers at John Deere were wise enough to vote in a two tier contract with lower pay and benefits for new hires. It kept the jobs in the United States and in the same town. The men and women working under that new contract are still doing ok. The companies that fought such changes are gone. Case-IH comes to mind....in came New Holland. They broke the union and moved the combine plant to Grand Island,NE.

Things like "cheating on your piecework" were eliminated when the company and UAW agreed to the new rules at John Deere!  :lmao:

DUmmies are clueless....this is the 1975 digital camera from Kodak. It was huge!

Kodak did not fail because it missed the digital age. It actually invented the first digital camera in 1975. However, instead of marketing the new technology, the company held back for fear of hurting its lucrative film business, even after digital products were reshaping the market.

Same thing happened to Ilford a while back and they're better off for it. Kodak film is not likely to disappear any time soon.

The Kodak films are at the moment some of the best colour print films available (Fuji for slides and Ilford for BW imo).
