I'm on paid leave from work due to my neck surgery, but things should be wrapped up next week just in time to fly out of Las Vegas Thursday morning. I purchased my nonstop ticket in June and it was quite affordable.
I will be heading back home, to the Quad Cities and surrounding areas for a week.
5 cities, two states, one big river in the middle (http://www.visitquadcities.com/)
Quad Cities USA (http://www.quadcities.com/)
They make these in Moline & East Moline, IL...I used to paint parts for the cabs when I was 19 years old...
This is Geneseo, IL the town I lived in worked in off and on for 10 years. When I was in the car biz, you move around a lot...but for the last four years of my life in IL this was my town I lived in worked in...6,500 residents. Geneseo is also the home of the Springfield Armory and Armalite. Rock River Arms and Lewis Machine is not too far away either. Crime was pretty low in that town. The town is known for it's Victorian homes.

I spent 5 years when I was young working here. Some of the aluminum we made might be in your home or business! Or the next time you are on a plane look out at the wing and think, did Rob Johnson mix the alloy right? The world's largest aluminum mill, ALCOA Davenport Works, in Riverdale, IA

The air was toxic inside that plant! Our cars all won insurance checks for paint damage. But it was safe for us to breathe while working. :lmao:
I will be staying with friends that live close to where the Quad City Air Show will be Sept 1 & 2nd...the Blue Angles will be in town...I can watch it from their yard.
I don't normally drink. But I do usually tie one on when I am on vacation. :cheersmate:
What are your plans?

I do not think that word means what they think it means. :-)

Explain.
It used to be four cities. One was pissed off and joined the group. Sorta like the Big 10

I from down in Decatur, more so from a small town near Decatur, but living in Decatur now, so I'm familiar with the Quad Cities, but haven't been there many times.

You are where ADM (Another Dead Man) makes all that ethanol!
My brain also just made the facebook connection. :-) Good posting there also, friend.

That is a good thing!
I was on the dark side when they had their big labor dispute in the early 90's..... :-)
I was an elected union rep & all that stupid stuff...It was not all stupid. I was able to work on all the new mills first. I was on a joint company/union safety and labor task force in which we eliminated and combined jobs to be more efficient. I saved a few people from getting hurt, a couple from getting fired, helped a couple others get fired before they killed someone, and at 23 years old had my own office and a Cushman to ride around the plant in. Then I screwed up my shoulder and back when a 93 year old lady ran a red light and I nailed her car on my way to work. Everytime I returned to work the production jobs freaking killed me with pain.

I am hoping for a nice long quiet weekend. Been burning oil at all ends and the deadline for most of my projects at the moment is 8/31. I also will be taking a certification test on 8/28, so when not working, I am studying, or thinking about studying. I believe I will be headed out to East Texas, to my buddies farm and looking at farm life while enjoying some good visits, food and drink.
-
If the weather is nice, I'll be outside working on my car(s). My Toyota needs work and I will probably manage to procrastinate until then.
-
If God is still hearing and answering prayers (last time I checked, he was...) we'll be moving OUT of our tent, and INTO our new house.
-
Working.
-
I plan to spend the day regulating my vowels in anticipation of a long-ish car trip later in the week.
-
My husband will be working on our stairs. He has worked the last two weekend figuring out exactly how he is going to do it (and drew it on the wall), what he needs to order and what he can get at lowes and home depot.

I worked most of the other holidays this year, so it's my turn to take some time off.

It sounds like a good weekend for a project!

We don't get holidays off other than Thanksgiving and Christmas. The sad thing is if they could force us in on those days without a mutiny they would...

I'll be at my sister's, awaiting her return home from the hospital from her surgery.

I love the look of this town. So wonderful! I would love to visit a place or live here

I am going to go paintballing and have my youngest son's bday party with my sil's kids. Her father passed away 2 weeks ago when we were going to do it so we had to cancel.

I took my vacation before and after the holiday, so that is why it worked out.
Twice this summer I watched fireworks from work. It sucked. Not sure if I would of went to see them otherwise, but it stirs up emotions in me as I really start to miss my father on holidays.
I did get holiday pay on top of my regular pay, that always helps.

Have fun, Rob! My husband is from Monmouth, IL. Kind of close to the Quad Cities.
We don't have any plans. Just finishing up packing since we close the Wednesday after Labor Day. We are both off on Monday, of course, but I will work if they decide to let us. Labor Day isn't a big deal to me.

They shut down that street and put on an amazing Victorian CHRISTmas walk. With live window displays. People come from all over to attend. Many travel down from Chicago to visit. (150 miles) The streets are full of love, joy and peace during that night!

My brother in law graduated from Monmouth High School. His parents owed the Monmouth Hotel which is now the Monmouth bank. There is marble from the walls in that hotel that is now used as park benches in the town. They had a few bucks.
His parents are gone now, but I always enjoyed going to their house for holidays. Even when my own parents were snow birds and not around for the holidays. I always had an open invitation, great people. Friendly town.
I used to have several relatives, including myself that did not live too far from Monmouth at different times. We would go there for dinner once in a while as a kid.

Good luck on the test.
I need to get my butt in gear. I need to complete 20 continuing eduction credits by October for Nevada and one of the hours has to be a "live law" class and I still don't know the date or time and either does my company!
It's job security, but a pain every two years. Then in April I need to complete 30 hours for my national certification...
Most of the courses we can't even legally share with the people we serve due to our state laws.

Yeah, I should be finished in a little over two years. I sure did pick a boring career!

I just feel Blessed that I have been able to keep the same job for over four years.

Nothing extraordinary, if the weather's nice I imagine we'll grill stuff. My son starts school 9/5 (he'll be a junior!) but has everything he needs for school so I don't anticipate any last minute shopping. I have to get him in for his sports physical this week as my co-worker is taking vacay next week and won't be able to cover for me.
Any Monday off is a GOOD Monday, as far as I'm concerned! :-)
-
If my plans work out my vacation will be extended by three or more days.
I will know tomorrow. :-)

Yes, I foresee THIS in my future for the weekend as well!
-
Mrs. E and I were invited over to a friend of her's on Friday night. The reason wasn't so much social as it was practical -- the friend's husband is in the market for purchase of a euphonium and I'm the guy with the answers. :whistling:
Apart from that, I've already resurrected a project I'd started on back in 2005 and had put on the back burner. Hell, it's been so long on the back burner that the pilot light's gone out. But I'll be re-reviewing my information and writing and the re-writing again and again and again until I'm sick of it.
But this project will go on past this weekend.

Are you composing something musical, Eupher?

Are you composing something musical, Eupher?
No, I'm writing a book. Seriously.
I've not had enough training to be a composer. Wouldn't do that anyway -- it's never interested me. Arranging, yes, but not composing.
-
Fiction or non?

Shades of Eupher?
-
Fiction or non?
Non. It's an historical account of the 298th Army Band, sprinkled with a lot of anecdotes and personal accounts of those who served there. Deactivated now, it was stationed in West Berlin from 1945 till 1994. Nobody else is writing it, so I am.

Oh, I have a thing or two to say in the book.

Cool. :cheersmate:

Thank you. I feel sorta shitty, because while I have probably a couple hundred pages written, it's a very poor first draft. I've let the thing sit idle for a very long time, mostly because of time constraints. Be that as it may, some of the guys I talked to and who gave me their stories were there in the beginning and are dying off. I gotta finish this thing before any more of 'em croak. :p

I'm paying off the credit card bill from the Brew Tour. Staying close to home, may go for a day trip ride around the lake. I'll pack a sammich and thermos of coffee if I do.

I guess my plans at this point are junkyard diving for Camry parts and a suspension upgrade for the MG. Maybe a date. We'll see. :ashamed:

Have some polo stuff to do Friday, Sunday, and Monday, and offered to help spell people at a grassfire on Saturday. Then polo will be over and besides our continuing wildfire problems, it will be time to start shipping cows.
-
I just ended my long hold time on the phone with the airline.
I extended my vacation by four extra days..... it saved me $1.90 on the airfare, even with the last minute change.
-
I plan to sleep until I'm done sleeping.
-
I'm getting all my stuff ready (license, enough ammo, cleaning my shotgun) Friday so when Saturday comes around, my FIL, boys, and I can go to the family farm and kill some innocent (albeit tasty) dove. Once that's done on Friday, I'm meeting my parents for a birthday dinner, then cake over here at The W560 Compound.
It will be my boys' first time shooting a shotgun. We are all excited.
Of course, church on Sunday.
-
Going to the local pub to watch UT play/lose their first game on Friday night.
Working Sat morn 7-noon, and Sunday and Monday nights from 8-4am. Happy happy joy joy.
Also, since we move a week ago, I am still in unpacking mode. What a cluster ****!

UT is playing Duke or NC State, right? If they lose to an ACC team, they should just turn in their SEC membership... :fuelfire:
-
No real plans right now. If all goes as it is, Miss Chris and I will prolly grill a couplea steaks, eat a baked potato, and gnosh on Bread Pudding for dessert.
Isaac wore her out (plants, etc.) . It also put the kibosh on other pland and invites we had. Just gonna relax, really.

The men in my household are expecting UT to lose. :(

It's about to rain.
Tomorrow is going to have a bunch of rain.
There is a circus, air show, go kart races, and two community fall festivals this weekend. The circus might be the big winner as it's indoors. They have so many events on one weekend due to some political conflicts. They did not want the air show to be the same weekend as the John Deere Golf Classic earlier in the year. So instead two little towns are getting robbed of revenue.
-
I am taking a much needed breather after moving and before I start classes again and dreaded FYE for big daddy gubmint. First weekend without the kids in about a month. I'm going to unpack, hang things on the wall, workout(how I have missed it!!!), do yardwork(since I have a real house with a yard I maintain again--yay!), and just kick back and breath. Nothing special but definitely relaxing.

There is always an extra slice for Iassa.
Reminds me of a Yogi ism...
Yogi Berra: I'll have a medium pizza
Pizzeria: You want that sliced in 4s or 8 slices ?
Yogi: Better make it 4, I'm not that hungry

We're going swimming even though it's cloudy, but it's hot and humid and we're not supposed to get rain until later, then a BBQ.
-
The same thing I've done every labor day all my life.....labor. But this time it will be something I enjoy and not because I HAVE to work.

I've been dodging rain all weekend. Whatever's left of Isaac is hovering over the area for the rest of the day.

The rain on my vacation finally came to an end.
I woke up to a neighbor mowing wet grass and that sent my allergies into orbit. :-) I finally stopped sneezing.
-
It pretty much rained all weekend, but that was good since we needed the rain, and I was working anyway. After putting in a 19 hour day yesterday that ended about 1:30 this morning, I'm not doing a darn thing today.
-
Went swimming yesterday and wouldn't you know a small rain storm popped up overhead while in the pool, the only freaking place in the northern part of the state that had rain.
-
Chased inside by the rain again. So far, this weekend has been a bust.
-
Friday night - just picked at some leftovers. Saturday night - grilled some steaks. Sunday night - home made spaghetti. Tonight - pizza.
Excitment abounds, food wise. :-)

My phone has been blowing up from old friends now that I am visiting. It's hot and humid today and I really don't feel like being outside. I don't like it when a vacation starts to feel like a job. Some of these people I never seen when I lived here and now all of a sudden I am supposed to go out of my way to see them. :bird: Of course most of them are single moms, just what I don't need right now.
I am really enjoying doing not much today.

Had family come in this past weekend.
Friday, celebrated the big "Four-Two".
Saturday, hung out and played with the twins and my neices, went bowling while this odd water fell from the sky...don't kow what that was about. Then the water stopped, and went dove hunting.
Sunday, church, hung out with inlaws and extended family, and then went dove hunting. The twins wound up getting 3 dove each.
Today, chilled with the family, got housework and grocery shopping done.

Personally, I'd think that busts would be the favored item to be fixated on.

But you gotta go get it them yourself.

I have a friend who has a tattoo artist friend in the Houston area (I think). The guy will tattoo nipples FREE OF CHARGE on any woman in need after cancer reconstruction surgery. I'm told he does a splendid job that looks 3-D. Is that cool or what?

Let me get this straight.
You've got a friend who has a friend who happens to be a tattoo artist who tattoos nipples on women who have lost theirs due to cancer surgery.
I say BS.
Your friend ain't in Houston. That sounds like Buffalo to me.

Let me get this straight.
You've got a friend who has a friend who happens to be a tattoo artist who tattoos nipples on women who have lost theirs due to cancer surgery.
I say BS.
Your friend ain't in Houston. That sounds like Buffalo to me.
Au contraire mon frere!
Tattooing nipples on after breast reconstruction surgery has been around for years!! It's a wonderful thing.
A friend of mine who had a double mastectomy, had it done, and it's an incredible process.
When the doctor does the final reconstruction surgery ( a plastic surgeon) he forms a "nipple" by bringing a "twist" of skin up and through the front for properly places nipples on the breast. Granted they are not the same size as a typical female nipple, and are more similar to the general shape of a man's, but a bit larger. (I'm talking just the nipple itself).
Once the new breast and nipple have completely healed - which was a couple of months - the tattooing process starts. My friend's required several visits, as it not only a lengthy process, but it's to let the skin calm down a bit from visit to visit for proper shading. If only one breast has been removed, the tattooist tries to match the other one in color, shape and size of areole as much as possible. If both are removed, the patient looks at pictures to try to pick a "shape" and color similar to what she had, or what she would prefer, for the tattooist to copy. Also getting the color right for the patient's skin tone is important.
I was absolutely amazed at how incredible my friend's ended up looking. She did say it was pretty painful process though. I think she ended up going about 6 times. The weekend before her mastectomy, we went up to Lexington to the horse races, and the four of us sat in their hotel room "took drunk" that night to a new level. At some point during the evening, she had decided that when she had her reconstructive done, since she wouldn't have nipples anymore, she was going to have a butterfly tattooed in place of one, and a black widow spider tattooed on the other. (shots of tequila were being consumed by this point) I think her other half was pretty relieved to find out, the doctor was going to make nips for her!
Don't know if any of you have very personal knowledge of someone who has gone through this, but general surgeons doing mastectomies have become so much more focused on preserving the woman's body, body image and trying to give the plastic surgeon as much undamaged skin as possible to work with during the reconstructive process.
My friend had huge boobiez that were such a part of her personality. I'm talking 38DD's. She was not only incredibly frightened but devastated as to what would happen to her body, and whether or not her significant would stay with her. (she was about 56 at the time). When she was originally diagnosed she was told a lumpectomy, only to go to Thompson Cancer Center for a second opinion, and finds out she had a fast growing type of cancer that would require a double. The general surgeon did a diagonal incision from just in front of the point where her arm meets her body to the bottom of her sternum on each side. When the reconstructive was completed by the plastic surgeon, she had a single thin line extending from the outer edge midline to the nipple and one going down the front from only the nipple downward. They rapidly faded (surgeon said hers faded unusually quickly) and she would joke about going into the whole process "with 56 year old saggy boobiez and coming out with perky 20 yr old tits".
She did joke, but it was also almost a 3 yr ordeal from start to finish. She had wicked wicked chemo that almost killed her because someone forgot to give her some shot after her first treatment that would help her red blood cell regeneration, and she got some infection that put her in the hospital for a week and they sent her home to either kick it or it kick her ( ). She was not able to have another chemo for 2 months, that we all had to beg her to take, cause she was justifiably terrified that another one would definitely kill her. She then had to wait for 6 months after the last chemo treatment before the plastic surgeon would start the reconstructive, which took another year.
As much as I don't like that the Komen Foundation contributes to Planned Parenthood, they have done a great deal to help fund breast cancer research which also includes the reconstructive process. When 1 out of every 8 women get breast cancer these days, we women need all the help we can get from any source, to get through a catastrophic disease.

deb,
That was beautiful. Seriously.
I love breasts. I could happily do that as an avocation- a calling, really. It would also be a great thing to do when I retire.

I have two days left in the corn fields of Iowa.
We had another long thunderstorm last night and I spend the day with sinus congestion and sneezing.
I miss the dry heat of Nevada. On top of the rain it's been in the high 90's with humidity most days over 90%....
The rain has changed most of my plans during my visit. I was still able to catch up with some old friends, but you can never see everyone. This trip it seems like I hardly seen anyone. I still have some minor issues after the neck surgery also that have prevented me from being a "social ball of fire" also.
By the time I return to work next week we will be very busy and I will be ready.
