California poised to grant driver's licenses to young illegal immigrants

Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, a Los Angeles Democrat who has pushed for such driver's licenses for more than a decade, said he stands ready to propose whatever legislation is necessary.
Cedillo said he has nudged state officials for weeks to lift its nearly 20-year ban in response to the Deferred Action program.
Allowing every California resident to obtain driver's licenses enhances public safety because nobody would be forced into the shadows, driving illegally, often without insurance, he said.
"It's important to all Californians that we have motorists who are licensed, tested and insured," Cedillo said.
Besides, it makes no sense to deny a driver's license to undocumented immigrants in Deferred Action who have a legal right to work, attend college and travel in the United States, he said.
"These are people who are going to be contributing to our economy by seeking work, or pursuing educational goals," said Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville.
Cedillo said that granting driver's license rights to a select group now could pave the way for expanding such opportunities for more undocumented immigrants in years to come.
And let's not forget the real reason behind this action.....with drivers license in hand they will now be able to vote, Democrat of course. :argh:

It really is time to review the union. California is the cement overshoes that's going to drag the rest of us to the bottom.

If they can legitimately pass the driver's written test, in english, and a legitimate driver practical road test, I don't see any other objections.

Well, I thought about it in terms of those who visit the country on tourist visa's, student visa's and a whole host of other non citizens who are eligible for driver's license privileges. Maybe I should amend my POV, but if they show up at a DMV, and there is no way for the DMV to know their status...
If someone is here illegally, I would love to see them gone. I would like it to happen via attrition such as showing up at a DMV, and being found out, or traffic stops or any other of a number of ways. Unless I am missing something, an illegal with a legitimately procured driver's license hasn't had their illegal status benefited from the exchange.

I had to show my birth certificate to get my first DL, proving not only my age, but my citizenship status.
I've had co-worker here on work Visa's that had to show their Visa proving that they were of legal age and here legally before they could get a DL.
