What are your thoughts on this whole Akin deal?
-
Akin's a ****stick of the worst order. It's all about him.
He's an idiot and a selfish sumbitch.
No wonder McCaskill wants to run against him.

That pretty much sums up how I feel. I'm pretty pissed at him right now. Good to know I'm not alone.
His webpage (www.akin.org) is the poster child of what a damaged candidate's website looks like.

What really pisses me off, is that I voted for the dipshit in the primary.
I wasn't about to just off and pull the lever for Steelman, as her unionista tendencies worried me.
My parents went to the debate between the three candidates a few months back in Willard, and since I wasn't able to make it, I listened in on the radio. After Brunner couldn't give an answer on what he would cut (the two times he was asked) from the federal budget, I was worried he might say something strange on the campaign trail. How ironic is that?
Boy, do I feel like I picked the biggest turd out of the punchbowl on this one.

The remark shows he's stupid (All of it, both the rape part which could actually be explained to some degree if it hadn't been made in a campaign year, and the insanely-wrong part about women's bodies being able to reject fertilization under the stress of being 'real' victims), his reaction in refusing to stand aside shows he is also an arrogant, selfish asshole.

In life you will end up listening to someone, so you should choose carefully those that you will listen to. It's the same principle as disease, if you don't want to catch it, don't hang around people that have it.
-
I do not understand why he chose to ride this out, lacking all funding sources. What in the world is he thinking? Was he encouraged by that PPP poll? Then he should have looked into the sample makeup (as always), showing a R+9 weighting. This whole thing sickens me.

Yes, that is a big part of his problem. He is the poster child for what's wrong with getting your advice on scientific/medical issues from you preacher instead of someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
-
What if he wins? Is he going to be a bad ass that stood his ground as he is saying he is?

Sympatico.

I'm not defending this guy's comments by any means but...
The idea that during rape, “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down†to prevent pregnancy, as Mr. Akin said, has surfaced periodically among anti-abortion advocates over the past two decades, usually involving the term “forcible rape†to refer to what Mr. Akin called “legitimate.â€
Dr. John C. Willke, a general practitioner with obstetric training and a former president of the National Right to Life Committee, was an early proponent of this view, articulating it in a book originally published in 1985 and again in a 1999 article. He reiterated it in an interview Monday.

In fact a former nurse called into a radio talk show yesterday about this issue and she recalls being taught this theory in the course of her studies to become a nurse.

I was narrowing down the list of anybody but McCaskill.

Sounds more like picking the fly shit out of the pepper.. :-)

The GOP will have to come to terms with him the way the Dems did with Liebermann, if that happens. With six years for the stench of idiocy to leach away, assuming he doesn't add any more logs to the fire in the meantime, he would have the party with him again before re-election. However, if he does get elected, it will be in spite of himself and thanks only R&R's coattails - not because of any 'principled stand' - his two primary opponents stood for the same principles, and he could defer to either of them or many others without sacrificing his principles - this is about pride, hubris, and seeking power, not principle.

After I got over my own initial knee jerk reaction, I have come to the conclusion that the entire affair has been blown entirely out of proportion IMO.
But hey... it is an election year.
-
I am no tinfoil nut, but I have been hearing that Todd Akin might be paid by Claire McCaskill.

I had heard on the radio the Democratic Party donated to his primary campaign, but I don't know if it's true or not.

The Dems donated over $1M to his primary campaign in in various ways.

Fox News reported that a few times also.
A poster on another board from the St Louis area knows the guy personally and thinks he is a pretty good guy, so maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

Glenn Beck's Website:
While the conversation started out fairly light hearted, it quickly took a more serious turn as Glenn took the left to task for trying to take something said by a Missouri Senate candidate and tie it to the national election. Moreso, Glenn pointed out that while Akin’s comments were blatantly inaccurate, the thinking that a woman’s reproductive system would “shut down†during trauma (like rape) was a theory presented in the 1970s.
“When we started looking into it and if you Google that opinion and you look at things that have not come out for the last week, that opinion is out there. It’s all based on a 1970s study, but it is out there,†Glenn said.
And while Glenn said the comments make him question Akin’s judgement, he did say that if the left and liberal organizations like Planned Parenthood had been honest about their goals, they would have used this as an opportunity to educate the public about the realities behind rape and pregnancy rather than simply attack Akin and try and take the GOP presidential ticket down with him.

I am that poster from the other board who does know him. I worked against him in his first run for national office, the run for congress. The guy I backed was one of 5 in a primary race. Akin's church people didn't always play fair, but he was smart enough to stand back and let the others slam each other. He just waltzed in.
As I said, I thought that he's always been a good congressman and never recall him saying anything particularly stupid. He's always been a staunch conservative.
I also know where he goes to church. It's not a way out, whack job church, but is pretty fundamentalist. I'm sure that's where he got his views.
I think he should have stepped aside, but you have to remember after these policiticans have been in congress long enough, they view this as their job. He'd be faced with unemployment, like the rest of the folks. I think he has a bunch of kids to support.
Missouri is a stubborn state. And it is a conservative state. McCaskill is horrible and not popular.
Maybe he'll win, but probably will be snubbed. He never was part of the RINO group, always was pretty much off on his own.
That show, the Jacko show, is awful. That guy has been fired from numerous stations. He's a lib, and in my opinion a total snake. Charles Jacko has such a reputation that Akin's biggest stupidity was agreeing to go on that show.

Gotta agree with SLW. I live down here in SW Missouri, strong Southern Baptist country. Now, even if I am an atheist, I'm strongly prolife and accept that human life begins at conception. The product of human eggs and human sperm will NEVER grow into oak trees, or any other natural creatures. There! That's where I stand.
I voted for Akin in the primary. I'll vote for him in the general election. I wish he hadn't said what he did, but then I guess Hussein wishes he hadn't said he had visited 57 states - and still had one more to go. Or suggested that it was the government built that Mom and Pop grocery store on the corner.
There are no erasers for the spoken word. That's just the way it is. Live with it.

I saw, within the last couple of days that Akin is polling ahead of what's-her-name, McCockill.
