Title: Holiday Weekend Plans?
Post by: RobJohnson on May 23, 2008, 01:42:08 PM
Other then honoring U.S. men and women who have died in military service, what do you have planned?

Remember all those that have served or are currently serving our nation.

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.” -- General George Patton

We are doing yard work on Saturday, going out Sunday night to celebrate our anniversary, and having a cookout on Monday.  Should be a good weekend!

ETA:  I even bought new outfits for my dogs for the Memorial Day holiday.  Pics to be posted soon.  Yes, I'm insane, I know.

Here's a picture of my last bike...

That one was ten years old and only had 10,000 miles on it when I bought it.  It was like driving a brand-new motorcycle.

I took my last bike to the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Gap.  I had it for two whole summers before someone in a Ford Festiva ran a red light and tore the front end off of it.

I'd like to go to the beach.  I was thinking of riding down to Mobile next month.

I am packing my gear and cleaning my digs, pursuant to ending my current hitch, probably the last time I'll be on extended active duty, so it's a bittersweet time.  However, I live for the "Now," and this weekend "Now" means finishing all the packing today and then cleansing the Hinesville apartment of all traces of human habitation on Sunday and Monday so come 0900 Tuesday I can get it inspected, stop in at the office one last time, and drop off my cable box and DSL modem on the way out of town forever.  Leaving behind some great friends both on the military side and in the Savannah area, but going back to family and friends I've only had a chance to be with about nine months out of the last three years.

(Imagine a smiley with a big grin and a tear in its eye at the same time)

We're bbq'ing out in the back yard tomorrow, having a few neighbors and some of my former fellow workers over for ribs and beer.  Stocked up on the Corona, the pork ribs, and corn on the cob.  Then we've got to start packing as my wonderful wife Ginger and I are off to "foreign lands" next week for a week long vacation in Acapulo!!  Sun and golf -- ah, the good, semi-retired life.   :hyper:

Went to a BBQ yesterday at my sister's house. Played some Wii Mario Kart. That was fun.

Right now I'm watching NASCAR, eating some pizza, and chatting with y'all.

On the agenda for tomorrow is a run in the morning, chores, and relaxing. I don't go out the cemetary like my family used to do every year. Maybe I should do that too.

I've been so busy over the last few weeks with moving, my wife's baby stuff, and work... hadn't had time for much else.... including here. So, it's beer, barbeque, and baseball for this weekend until Tuesday.

Bad start to the day already. I was awaken to the sound of my father falling into the cabinet in the hallway outside of my room. It is mostly glass and so is just about everything in it. Fortuneatly he only bruised his left arm were he hit the side of the cabinet. HE's been using a walker for most of the past year now since he is having trouble getting around at his age of 85.The rest of the day has been spent taking care of dad ,watching the Indy 500 and having some good food made by mom.

Yeah, it's been a while, hasn't it? lol

Well I'm off work today and most of the day tomorrow, so I finally had time to relax rather than packing up boxes, or going to Wee Wares to find a deal on a high chair or playpen, so it's all good.

Tomorrow morning there's a race event at the Ballpark.  (http://americanheroesrace.com/)

My nephews and one of their cousins will be doing the kiddie 1k.  My SIL's sister and one do the 5k.  It's a good event.  They present the flag and sign the national anthem and the mayor gives a little speech.  The kiddos run with some people in the Army and they're just great with the kids.  Nathan last year wimped out half way though it and ended up getting a piggy back ride for the last half of it.  LOL

Then afterwards, I'll probably go over to my SIL's parents house for a few hours to sit around and snack and chat.

Meant to add I'm taking my oldest to see Prince Caspian tomorrow. She's really excited since she loves this series of books and loved the first movie too. I figured I'd surprise her since usually I'm a wait until its on video or at least until nobody is in the theatres type of girl :-)

I'm the same way. It's almost not worth it to go to the theater anymore. Ticket and food prices are through the roof and usually the movie disappoints.

I really want to see Caspian but I'll probably wait to get through NetFlix.

That's the way to go. I'm doing this as a treat since I know this series is particularly special to her. Besides, I have coupons for this theater I just got in the mail the other day and we can walk there its that close.  :-) :hyper:

Hey, Jen? I know you are running. Do you go to a high school track? I've been doing that and something else I do there just to build some leg strength is run the bleachers. Have you tried that? It's pretty intense when you do about 20 of those up. I love the payoff on the last one...I stand up on the highest seat and look out over the back of the bleachers and just see the all around.

I haven't been to a track yet. Our local running club has practice sessions at two tracks in the valley. I haven't participated in those. I'm still debating whether or not to join the club. I don't feel like I'm "good enough" yet, which I know is silly.

My usual runs are in the neighborhood surrounding my apartment complex. I've also found a couple of nice shaded trails in the valley. And since I've signed up for another 5K, I've been running at the park where that will be held once a week, just to get familiar with the area.

If you are tracking mileage, there is a great site where you can map out your run and find out the exact mileage:

www.mapmyrun.com (http://www.mapmyrun.com)

I refer to it frequently when I'm trying to scope out a different 3-miler than my normal runs.

Beautiful! Thanks, Jen. I recommend trying the bleachers(when it cools down) and especially if your breathing is good, but you find you want to strengthen up your rear and legs. Well, it can be challenging with the breathing too. I'm normally wiped halfway through, but then all the numbing hormones work on the leg muscles and the adrenaline keeps me going.

You should be really proud of what you've done! Thanks for the link! i'm definitely checking that out.

Why don't you just go to one of the clubs practice sessions and observe? That might help alleviate your concerns.

The race that I'm doing in July is run by the local running club. So that will be a good opportunity to meet some of the members. You don't have to be a member to participate in the races. As long as you can pay the entry fee. LOL.  :-)

I actually know someone who is a part of the club. Trouble is, our schedules never gel and she lives on one side of the valley and I live on the other side, so it's tough to get together. Everything I've heard about the club is that they are a great bunch of runners.

I just need to suck it up, put on my big girl panties, and do it already.

Just don't slip on them in Arizona...tsssss...sound of the hand touching a steel bleacher in summer. Sucks when they are wet too..I speak from experience  :thatsright:

Seriously though, I take great interest in your progress as we started at nearly the same time in setting and working on fitness goals. I wish you much luck!

My neighbors had a cook out and I was invited. Huge meaty baby back ribs on the grill, with awesome potato salad and baked beans....

Then neighbor comes back outside holding a triple chocolate cake and everyone is singing happy birthday to me....I did not need that piece of cake, but it tasted so darn good....I can't remember the last time I had a b/d cake...I felt pretty special and about cried.

Then they made me take the cake home......so it is looking it at me...and I am looking at it..... :spork: :spork:

I am close to the "thrity pounds lost" mark....but this cold rainy weather the past few days, has really limited my activity, as with my screwed up back, knees and neck...I really am limited to working out in the pool....but the pain continues to get better....just don't want to screw myself up....

I had lost 40lbs the winter of 2006-07...then gained it all back with this work injury that I had in Jan.... :hammer:

Well enough of this typing...my fingers have had enough exercise...I'm going for a walk....

Jty and Jen...good luck with your pursuit of fitness! I for one, know how hard it is....

I'll put pics up tomorrow from our bbq today...maybe we'll do a holiday weekend pic thread towards the end of the day or something.

Thx for the words of support, Rob. It feels really good to be back into physically challenging activities. Hope your injuries continue to improve and you are wise to just take it slow getting back into it.
