A spokeswoman for Mitt Romney wrote late Sunday that the presumptive GOP presidential nominee and his running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, did not share Rep. Todd Akin's sentiments on rape.
"Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg wrote.
Earlier Sunday, Akin said he "misspoke" when he claimed "legitimate rape" rarely resulted in pregnancy.
Answering a question about whether or not he thought abortion should be legal in the case of rape, Akin explained his opposition by citing unnamed bodily responses he said prevented pregnancy.
"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said of rape-induced pregnancy in an interview with KTVI. A clip of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge.

Oh, whoop-de-do.
So an (R) candidate made a flub, a stupid remark.
Excresence happens; there's going to be those in this campaign--and thus far there's been far more stupid remarks made by candidates of the other party. Joe Bidet is the champion of stupid comments, and Barack Milhous isn't a piker himself.
And one recalls Vast Teddy's stupid hate-filled comments about Robert Bork, circa 1990.
We'll get over it, and we have a lot less to "get over" than the other side does.
How's things in Franklin Roosevelt's hometown, by the way?
-
Less than 3% of the million+/- abortions performed annually in the USA are the result of rape.
-
I have to keep faith with franksolich. But I would add pregnancy by rape is a colossal lib red herring.
-
Well at least the troll is regular. :whistling:
-
Todd Akin made an incredibly stupid remark.
It is indefensible and if he has any sense at all he would immediately withdraw.
You can't rehabilitate stupid like that.
If I lived among his electorate I could not even hold my nose and pull the lever.
-
I saw the DUmmies were going to try to use this as an issue and claim that Romney and Ryan are okay with abortions for rapes to try to dissuade their conservative family members for voting for them. :mental:
Just remember folks 0bama voted to allow the killing of babies who survived the abortion procedure.
-
This has nothing to do with Obama, Romney or Ryan.
This is singularly about Aikn.
I would pull the lever for the D rather then Akin.
I simply would not countenance that kind of ignorance.
-

I wouldn't go that far. I would simply not vote.

The D is McCaskill, so no way in Hell.

I think Biden is laughing his ass of today because of this Akin comment. Because you know if a RAt had said this it would be barely in the MSM news cycle.

When the alternative is Claire McCaskill, I can hold my nose and pull the lever.
Akin ****ed up -- simple as that. McCaskill IS a lib ****up. There's a difference.
-
Anyone remember the noise from the left when Whoopy Goldberg sort of defended Roman Polanski by questioning whether it was rape -rape . Yeah, me neither.
I know it's off topic, but it does demonstrate the left's hypocrisy

Yes, I remember that well. Allegedly all the women on the view are feminists. Not a peep. The double standard was deafening.

It very well could.

It was being reported today that the GOP is cutting his funding. I agree with them, Akins is a tool and needs to check facts before opening his mouth. A gaffe that stupid could ruin it for the whole party.
-

With a gaffe that bad he needs to consider putting a D behind his name.
-
With a gaffe that bad he needs to consider putting a D behind his name.
For sure. That was probably one of the most stupid things I have ever heard a Republican say. Wow ...
-
With a gaffe that bad he needs to consider putting a D behind his name.
Maybe he is a RINO.
-
In the words of Andrew Breitbart: "So?"
Maybe it is because I do not live in Missouri and maybe I am missing some hidden policy threat implied within the idiotic statement.
Is the press going to try to tar the entire GOP with it? Yes. But only because the GOP usually caves to this sort of thing.
Should Akin drop out? I have no idea
The Democrats have Gaffzilla and Mecha Gaffzilla on the same ticket. Every time a GOP gaff comes up, whoever is being interviewed should have a back catalog at their fingertips.
If Akin has to go, he has to go. But nobody who isn't Akin has to roll over and be tarred with guilt by party affiliation.

The biggest problem is that the Obama Regime will try and tie Akin to Romney/Ryan. The left is always looking for new mud to sling, because not much is sticking this time.
-
Maybe he is a RINO.
I wonder if he is a Tea Party candidate or not.
-

Yep. But one of the reasons is because it works.
What Akin said was incredibly stupid but until the Republicans stand up to the media while it attempts to slime them, it will continue.
This is just as stupid as the left trying to tar Ryan with Ayn Rand.
-
I wonder if he is a Tea Party candidate or not.
Actually he wasn't but, they lined up behind him after the primary. They joined the RNC & everybody else in withdrawing their support today. The nail biter is that he has until tomorrow to resign so the Republicans can replace him. If he doesn't resign, I think the unthinkable happens & McCrisco wins.
-
Maybe he is a RINO.
A RINO would never take such a strong position against abortion. I'm defending him, but a RINO would either be pro choice or damn near pro choice.
-
I confess I'm not up on what happens in this kind of situation.
Akin won the Missouri primary a couple of weeks ago. He was not my favorite candidate. I thought John Brunner had a much clearer message and the most potential to beat Claire McCaskill, who -- let's be real now -- is the ****ing ENEMY here.
She MUST be defeated in the general election in November.
So Akin opens his mouth and inserts foot.
How can the RNC actually replace Akin? With whom? Akin won a state-wide primary. It seems to me, apart from allocating money and other types of support, the RNC doesn't have the power to simply replace a duly-elected candidate.
Or am I missing something here? :???:

Well they have to replace him by 5PM today and they could "force" him to drop out by essentially disavowing him and and not giving his campaign any support or money (which they have done). If Akin tries to run hes probably going to lose because he will no longer be able to match McCaskill's money.

Well, it does appear that he's toast. Priebus told Akin not to bother showing up at the convention.
My question still has not been answered. Who would replace Akin? And who decides who that is going to be?
I'll keep digging.

Getting closer:
Under election rules in Missouri, the deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday for candidates to withdraw from the Senate race without a court order. The state party would have until Sept. 18 to select another candidate.
Sources said GOP officials may be considering replacement candidates beyond the other two Republicans who were defeated by Akin in last month’s hard-fought primary: John Brunner and Sarah Steelman.
LA Slimes (http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-mcconnell-suggests-todd-akin-consider-his-options-20120820,0,5243455.story)
My own preference is John Brunner. A citizen-candidate, a non-professional politician. Steelman is in bed with the unions.
-
I would assume they would go with Brunner who finished 2nd in the primary or they might fund caucus or special election to make sure thats who the people want since Brunner and Steelman were very close
-
Apparently the dems wanted Akin to win the primary so much they spent more on helping him win than his own campaign did
Democrats spent $1.5 mil to help Akin win GOP primary (http://washingtonexaminer.com/democrats-spent-1.5-mil-to-help-akin-win-gop-primary/article/2505373#.UDOQVN1mSew)
-
Apparently the doctors Akin has been talking to are crazy-ass Pentecostal Doctors of Divinity instead of actual medical doctors. As one of the MO voters he's talking about, ****ING QUIT YOU STUPID BASTARD!!!
-
McCaskill wants him to stay in:
McCaskill issued supportive remarks about Akin on Monday, saying she and Akin “disagree on some things, but he is sincere.â€
“While I disagree with what he said, he has now in the last few hours really apologized for what he said. I think what is startling to me is that these party bigwigs are coming down on him and saying that he needs to kick sand in the face of the Republican primary voters,†she said.

ETA: from Ace of Spades HQ:
CORRECTED PPP Numbers for Missouri
—CAC
Since PPP decided it can't help itself, I've done you all a service.
I went through their ridiculous R+9 sample and ONLY changed the D/R/I proportions to match previous elections, and an even turnout.
With R+9, PPP's headline screams Akin up by 1. It is an obvious, sick ploy to get this delusional Bio101 flunkie to stay in and cost us a seat.
Here are the real numbers:
If turnout in November matches 2008 (it won't):
McCaskill 49.25% Akin 39% (this is a D+6 turnout model)
If turnout in November is even, an incredible feat for the GOP considering heavy turnout in St Louis and Kansas City during an election year:
McCaskill 47% Akin 40%.
If turnout in November matches the best we have ever seen in the state (R+3 during 2010):
McCaskill 45% Akin 41%.
McCaskill is a dead duck if we dump Akin. The other candidates from the primary were crushing her up and down. To trail her by four in a best-case scenario is inexcusable at this point.
The fact that PPP had to triple the best R margin ever just to get Akin over McCaskill screams agenda polling, but they will never admit to that, so I'm calling them out on it, and it's time for you to spread the word. PPP's "Akin still leads" poll is garbage, the approval rating for Akin with this huge R spread is a God-awful 24%, and McCaskill hasn't cut one rape ad yet.
Akin.
Must.
Go.

Yeah, that's the proper course of action to better our country, take Claire's advice.
-
I wish the DNC would treat the gaffe masters the same way the GOP does. If that was the case, Crazy Joe would have been gone long ago. That just goes to show that the GOP stands up to what happens, and fixes the issue because they know it can hurt the whole party, where as the DNC doesn't give two shits.

Isn't that the truth.
As another note: Mitt Romney told Akin to step down today. I am glad he is taking a stand against him. More Republicans should do the same thing.

Jim Talent was the former GOP officeholder of the McCaskill seat. I met him and he is a very decent man. If he was available, he should retake that seat from the shyster occupying it.

That would be fine with me.

Looks like Akin won't step down, our quest for senate control just got a lot harder
-
Odd that Democrats poured over a million dollars into Akins campaign and McCaskill is the only one wanting Akin to stay in the race.
-

Not only is Akin a shitbird, he's a stupid shitbird. Here's a classic example of a professional politician who is concerned only with himself.
Tarring and feathering would be too good for this asshole. :whatever:

You wouldn't say that if you knew the D. I'm from St Louis and personally know Akin. Know of the D. She richly deserves to lose. She's not popular, is extremely liberal and in my opinion, a snake.
Akin is a good man who said something stupid. How many dems have not been good people (including some Republicans), DID bad things and are still in office.
I know that we should hold a higher standard, but Akin has done a good job as US Rep in my old district. Everyone loved him there. He won a tough primary for senate and beat people with more clout and way more money. I know the church he attends. They have some odd ideas, but it still is a main line Protestant Church that leans more to the fundamentalist views.
-
I wonder if he is a Tea Party candidate or not.
The Tea Party supported his opponent, Sarah Steelman.
-

Jim is a truly good man, one of the few politicians I admire. I've known Jim and his family for a long time. He was a good friend to an ex-relative and I sat at the same table with him and his wife, Brenda, and their new baby at a wedding reception.
It's too late, Jim said he wouldn't jump in; Akin won't quit.
Here's hoping that the good people of Missouri will vote for Akin anyway and rid themselves of lovely Claire.
-
The Tea Party supported his opponent, Sarah Steelman.
they all had tea party endorsements
Akin was endorsed by Bachmann
Brunner was endorsed by Tom Coburn and FreedomWorks
Steelman was endorsed by Pailin and Tea Party Express

I know McCaskill, I know she deserves to lose. Every Republican that was running in the primary was going to beat her but for some reason the Dems invested 1.5 million to insuring that Akin would come up on top, I guess that investment paid off.
He opened his mouth and threw it all out the window and now he is to narcissistic to do what is right. It's all about Todd Akin now, the Missouri martyr I suppose.
McCaskill is going to win that race if things remain as they are now. McCaskill is the incumbent and Akin has proven himself to be some idiot freak and now Missouri GOP councilwoman Sharon Barnes is defending him and it ain't going to work, In fact it is just making things worse.
I shouldn't be surprised, politicians are crap and Todd Akin drives the point home.

You know I read the statement and I am having a hard time formulating outrage over it. Especially in this era of claims of rape and assault lodged against major sports figures which turns out to be nothing of the sort.
How I read it?, someone is raped they go to hospital where they can be given hormones to prevent pregnancy. Now that makes the assumption that every woman that is raped, is raped in ally by virtual stranger etc. The use of the word legitimate is unfortunate, but all of this nonsense media from it? the GOP cutting off funding? the calls for him to step down as a candidate.
Come on, is it really that necessary?

It's partially faux outrage. And it's partially the next crisis that deflects from the relentless media campaign to avoid talking about the economy -- at all costs -- but it's waaaay beyond "unfortunate" that Akin chose the words he chose.
It's mostly that Akin was asked a standard question which should have resulted in a standard answer. Instead, Akin chose to wing it and the more he talked, the worse it got. Even his attempt at recovery has stink written all over it.
That's not the type of candidate that will beat Claire McCaskill. She is a snake and she will stop at nothing to further her political career and her worship of Barry.
Akin is yet another professional low-key politician who suddenly found himself in the spotlight.
And blinked.
He ****ed up -- he's got to go. Above all else, McCaskill must go. Akin doesn't have what it takes to beat her at this point. And the funny thing is, McCaskill knows this intuitively -- which is why she herself invested in Akin's campaign.
-

Well I think the main part of it is he claimed that women who get raped have a natural body mechanism to stop from getting pregnant but the "legitimate rape" put it over the top. Rape is still one of the most taboo subjects even if he had formulated his words correctly talking about falsely accused rape, that is not something to talk about during a campaign. The guy is just an idiot with very little political sense and even less common sense.
-
"Legitimate rape" my ass. There's no such thing. What a douchebag.

That is because they will. They do it all the time. Conservatives, and Republicans, should know by now that the MSM lets the Liberals do and say what they want, but don't dare let a conservative and Republican do the same. They will make it out to be that all Conservatives and Republicans said what Akins said.

Bite my ass. I suspect you're idea of 'freedom' is more or less like anarchy respecting limits on you and rigid social controls on everyone with whom you disagree, and I just don't need any of that noise today...or ever.
Part of what Akin said could be ascribed to a poor choice of words to express some reservation about loopholes, but part of it was also just so wrong and stupid that he deserves everything that's being heaped on him. Whatever version of God he prays to for guidance must have a special 'Akin exception' for the mortal sins of pride and greed, because those are the reasons he didn't quit. Brunner and Steelman are both pro-life too, and there's no shortage of other candidates the MO party could pick even if it didn't want either of them.
It says everything about this situation that the MO Dems dumped a ton of money into Akin's campaign, and about you that you are too stoopid to figure out why.
