What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican Party?

Bravo Lawrence O'Donnell.
Now we head off to the races or race riots or whatever it is that passes
for intelligent discussion at the DUmp.
I loaded the whole thing up so you don't have to go get your feet dirty.

4. You often hear Republicans take credit for such things as the Voting Rights Act
and blame Democrats for opposing progressive legislation such as this. That was from a time when there were liberals like Everett Dirksen in the Republican Party and conservatives among the Democrats, especially in the South. Now, you can't find the slightest trace of a liberal in the Republican Party. And the true dividing line is the one described by O'Donnell, between liberals and conservatives, who used to inhabit both parties.

Try to make this argument knowing full well their is a difference between party an idealogy; and that both parties have did a 180 degree turn around when it ones to idealogy. Back when the Republican party was established it had a very liberal idealogy, while the Dems where conservative. The founders of the Republican party would be Democrats today. In the 20 century republicans were liberal and so were Northern Dems, while the southern Dems were the conservative ones that left the Democratic party and hijacked the Republican part to what it is today

5. Liberal ideas work. Republicans want...
...to be accepted as successful leaders and idea creators without actually being either of those things. Instead, they are put-down artists who hide their real records and intentions. They attack government, because they do it so badly. I wonder what a list of Republican laws and programs that worked would look like. I'm thinking "lengthy" isn't a word that would be used to describe it.
Republicans (who, as I say, like to hide using terms like "conservative" and "Tea Partier") are a mix of political sour grapes and the wealthy. Otherwise good people in the Republican fold have huge political blinders on, and the wealthy and fanatical do their best to make sure the blinders are glued on.

I'll have to try to dig it up. Whoa, it's not what I remembered:
"Henry, last fall, every time your boss got on the stump and said, "It's time for the rich to pay their fair share," I hid under a couch and changed my name. I left Gage Whitney making $400,000 a year, which means I paid twenty-seven times the national average in income tax. I paid my fair share, and the fair share of twenty-six other people. And I'm happy to because that's the only way it's gonna work, and it's in my best interest that everybody be able to go to schools and drive on roads, but I don't get twenty-seven votes on Election Day. The fire department doesn't come to my house twenty-seven times faster and the water doesn't come out of my faucet twenty-seven times hotter. The top one percent of wage earners in this country pay for twenty-two percent of this country. Let's not call them names while they're doing it, is all I'm saying."
Except there's a whole lot of fail there, because it's talking about absolute amounts of money and not percentages. And it assumes that the 1% are actually paying their taxes. And the 1% these days are doing their damnedest with superPACS to get more than 27 votes.

22. it's just some of those neo conservatives wished that this was a dictatorship
and people like little boots were the dictator. Because we all know things would run so much more smoothly. None of those pesky regulations protecting the plebes from our wealthy benefactors; none of those poor, starving people cluttering up the cities; none of those menial laborers demanding that they get paid real wages for their hard labor; and none of those elderly, disabled people to worry about-if they can't make it or have family who care, then I guess it's "good bye baby." As long as we make money-yes, predatory capitalism really works for them and their friends; unfortunately, usually at the detriment of everyone else.
and, these "new" repugs make the "old" repugs look down right liberal. That's how far down the rabbit hole they've gone.

23. Exactly - they demanded equality
I don't ever really use the terms "liberal" and "conservative" as they've become meaningless and completely misunderstood lately, but the basic difference is between a view where we are all equal partners in society, or whether there is properly an elite group in power who drag along behind them the rest of us - some willing workers, the rest dead weight.

I have to say that that is perhaps the most condensed piece of revisionism I have ever gazed at. Just about every one of those was the result of REPUBLICAN :thatsright: initiatives.
Definitely, a good chuckle.

Oh, I see some of the (D)Ullards attempting to justify that very point. :stoner:

So Republicans used to be Democrats and Democrats used to be Republicans? Liberals used to be Republicans and conservatives used to be Democrats?
That would mean that Wilson (president during WWI) and Truman (president at the end of WWII) were actually Republicans.

But wasn't the Democrats supposed to be conservative back then? At least by DUmmie Proud Liberal 80's standards? I guess Wilson would get a pass on that since the DUmmie did mention that Northern Democrats were liberals even back then. I guess I need a flow chart.
I do understand that since their party has such a sad and racist past that they have to create convoluted tales to feel better about themselves, but when it gets to the point that they need a flow chart to map their BS it's went a little too far.

Only when it suits the narrative. I love the contortions they go through to keep revising the historical record to justify their illness. It's very instructive in understanding the mindset of the German people in the 30's, that fell whole-hog for National Socialism. The parallels are spooky, especially the "middle class" populist pandering.

Its half right parties used to be more of a locational allegiance than a ideological allegiance. Turman was picked as VP to satisfy the conservative southern / midwestern base of the democratic party. Parties were all intermixed with liberals and conservatives then. Its only been since about 1980 where the GOP has been exclusively conservative and the democrats exclusively liberal.

Good point. But there is no way to honestly put Woodrow Fascist Wilson anywhere near the Republican Party, at any time.
