(Warning Pic Heavy) WWII B17 survival story
I am pretty sure the govt built this plane and not rich dudes pursuing the latest deferrment scams for themselves and their children.
after which a fairly interesting story about a damaged B-17 that brought the crew back to base during WWII...
The thread wanders around about relatives that were in the war and a debate around if the original story was embellished any with some speculation about where the plane actually managed to land. There is a cool note and a bunch of neat pictures in the thread.
We have a small jewel here:

30. Um...Bad Example .... But great aircraft
Actually, the prototype B17 (I forget it's experimental designation number ) was built by Boeing at Boeing's own expense and far surpassed the design parameters set out by the government.
Government thought they knew what they wanted, Boeing provided what was really needed.

I'll take "swerving into the truth" for $1000, Alex.

What makes the idiots think "the government" has plants that build aircraft?
Where would "the government" get the raw materials?
Dear DUmmies: The government adds nothing. It only takes away.

Not entirely true. Government adds red tape.

Yes, but that takes away from productivity.

But, it does add something. I didn't say, and you didn't stipulate, that whatever government added had to be positive.
(I know, semantics schemantics.)
