Why does he feel the need to claim that punk bands should not be held to account because the Sikh temple shooter was in a racist band?

Let's discuss the difference between punk rock and hate music.
I am a musician. And yes, I can actually play a number of instruments and I was classically trained and educated in music. I'm also a former minor punk rock singer so I think I'm qualified to post about this issue.
This asshole who decided to shoot a bunch of peaceful Sikhs does not represent the punk movement in any way. Hate rock is NOT punk.
Real punks of any age (I'm 57) do not associate nor identify with any of the hateful assholes in so-called white power movements. We have ALWAYS rejected this bullshit.
Real punks are gay, lesbian, straight, whatever. We never have judged each other. All we know is that we are disaffected and share a distrust of the establishment.
The one thing we are united about is ****ing FAIRNESS.
Every single one of us has been screwed over somehow by society, from Nixon to Bush and beyond. That is precisely why we are punks. We see that we are being ****ed over. And we were the first to make a big stink about it. And we were way out front, more than 30 years ago.
One night in 1978, I was chased up a blind alley and had the shit beat out of me by some small-town jackasses because they thought I was queer. I'm not. But, ever since, I've been on the side of the queers. Sure, I had gay friends but it was at that moment that I finally understood.
It seems weird to me that I must post in defense of punk rock, but please remember that the punk rock movement continues today. The whole point was to shock people into thinking.
I like that.

Stevie is a "punk" at age 57? Talk about your arrested development.

57, huh? ....Does that put him past the threshold for a late term abortion?

And NOT gay, that is an important fact he had to add.

Is there much difference between "hate rock" and many rap songs? I mean besides the intended targets of the songs?

"I'm not gay...I'd come out but I can't figure out how to work the closet door knob."

No but to the left there is.

Point of order: In many rap songs, as in many "hate rock" "songs", the intended target (at least, lyrically) is the same: black males.

I thought most rap songs targeted women and whitey. Of course there are those songs that are between rival rappers where they go after each other.

I think he means it's either targeted towards the black male (the listener of Rap) or targeting black males (as in go kill a black male).

I'm not sure why he didn't say, "I'm not queer... not that there is anything wrong with that."

The whole thing smells. Punk rock started back in the mid 70's and that would have made the op about 18 years old. It was more known in England then it was here in the US at the time. So unless the op was hanging out at CBGB in NYC And part of the scene there I have my doubts as to the truth of that statement that he was part of punk rock scene when most kids were into KISS and Lynard Synard at the time.
-
I listen to punk all the time...spent my formative years with the Clash & the Ramones. Doesn't make me an expert on skinheads anymore than having German roots in my typical American family tree makes me an expert in lederhosen.

Even so, I listened (and still listen) to some of the "classic" punk rock acts like The Ramones, Social Distortion, The Clash, Pennywise, X, Velvet Underground, Suicidal Tendencies, Fugazi, and even the Dead Kennedys, I'm still having a hard time seeing where punk and gay are so closely linked.
Hey, call me diverse.

Hey remember when the muslim major shot all those servicemen? Remember how the DUches were all up in arms about that?
If only this guy had been a muslim then all would be ok for the DUches.

Punk rock is to music what poetry is to a bunch of 50ies Beatnicks banging on bongo drums and yelling out what ever comes into their mind.
Music has many uses, it can calm and inflame, can cause fear or put one in the mood for love.
Music stays with us, brings back memory's good and bad. Almost impossible to ignore music that we hear from the past to ignore it.
Neil Diamond can bring me to a stand still no matter what I am doing. Any of Elvis recording the Gospel songs do the same.
There are some things from music that stick in my mind, Brown Stone playing as we put my youngest son on a bus for boot camp. Music goes with memory's.
Not this punk rock and rap, WTF, this is not music, it is just sound for Raves that give a darn about the music as long as they get high on X.
Music is just poetry put to sound, can be up beat or slow and sensual, this is what makes one whistle a song or hum it.
Screw the sounds of the heavy metal, Some of us can sing along with Kiss and Ozzie, we know the words, nothing like rap music saying kill your mother, kill your Pa, head off to Arkansas. So how does one sing along to the sounds of one person mashing down on an electric guitar at ear splitting volume to just make noise ?????
The worse it gets the more C&W I listen to, at least I can sing along with it.

I would like my Pepsi please. :-)
The only people that would get the two confused, are dips.

Vesta, music is all about personal taste and the great thing is, you don't have to listen to what you don't like. I love punk and death metal but I can also listen to show tunes, Wagner and Boz Skaggs all day long. I like Elvis too, rap...not so much. Neil Diamond puts me to sleep, he's right up there with Barry Manilow IMO. But I don't listen to what I don't like and leave it to those who do like it.
