Reid: 'Extremely credible source' said Romney didn't pay taxes for decade
By MANU RAJU
<...>
In a statement Thursday night responding to criticism, Reid said he was told by an "extremely credible source" Romney didn't pay taxes for a decade, and that the nominee is "hiding something" by refusing to release more tax returns.
Here's Reid's full statement:
"There is a controversy because the Republican presidential nominee, Governor Mitt Romney, refuses to release his tax returns. As I said before, I was told by an extremely credible source that Romney has not paid taxes for ten years. People who make as much money as Mitt Romney have many tricks at their disposal to avoid paying taxes. We already know that Romney has exploited many of these loopholes, stashing his money in secret, overseas accounts in places like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.
“Last weekend, Governor Romney promised that he would check his tax returns and let the American people know whether he ever paid a rate lower than 13.9 percent. One day later, his campaign raced to say he had no intention of putting out any further information.
“When it comes to answering the legitimate questions the American people have about whether he avoided paying his fair share in taxes or why he opened a Swiss bank account, Romney has shut up. But as a presidential candidate, it’s his obligation to put up, and release several years’ worth of tax returns just like nominees of both parties have done for decades.
“It’s clear Romney is hiding something, and the American people deserve to know what it is. Whatever Romney’s hiding probably speaks volumes about how he would approach issues that directly impact middle-class families, like tax reform and the economy. When you are running for president, you should be an open book.
“I understand Romney is concerned that many people, Democrats and Republicans, have been calling on him to release his tax returns. He has so far refused. There is only one thing he can do to clear this up, and that’s release his tax returns.â€

CNN's Dana Bash: Her source can confirm Reid's Romney tax allegation (Update)
by rem123
Tonight on CNN AC360, Anderson Copper opened his 'keeping them honest' segment with Sen. Harry Reid's recent tax allegation about Mitt Romney.
Cooper had CNN Capitol Hill reporter, Dana Bash on to discuss the story, according to Bash, her source can confirm Sen. Reid's allegation. Bash went even further, she said this source also personally knows the Bain source who would have access to Romney's tax record. If this Bain source story is true, then, Mitt Romney is in serious trouble. I'll have more later.

Also, the Daily Kos piece now includes a clip of Begala's exchange with Cooper.
From the comments the comments.
I was very disappointed in the segment.
Anderson Cooper compared Reid's allegation to the "Terror Babies" Louis Gohmert bit. That was AFTER Dana told him she had a secondary source that confirmed Reid's story and the Bain source. She pretty much stated that there would be no question the integrity of the source if we were to know who it was.

Anderson Cooper compared Reid to Louie Gohmert
and the Republican lunatics in congress.
Paul Begala kinda smacked him down, but AC kept at it with the false equivalency bullshit, taking Mary Matalin's side.

2. Reid's smart enough that he wouldn't go forward with this kind of accusation...

Unless he indeed knew he could back it up.
He knows perfectly well that if he was bluffing, the Republicans would call him out.
So excuse me while I entertain myself by watching Rmoney and the GOP self-immolate...
:whatever:
I heard a soundbite from today where Dingy Harry was bitching about Romney's wealth. Reid isn't exactly a church mouse himself. I must have forgotten that wealth is fine for libs it's just everyone else shouldn't have their wealth. :mental:

Well to be fair, when I was a child my imaginary friends were pretty credible too. So of course Harry's imaginary friend must be credible to him as well. :-)

I bet Harry Reid's father would be very disappointed at his son's libelous claims against an innocent mant.

George Romney would be ashamed of Reid not Mitt. That was a low blow by Dingy Harry.
-
By "extremely credible" he means "half naked 10 year old boy loaded on boxed wine."
-
I bet it was Dan Rather

I heard that #HarryReidisapedarest.

Romney was on Hannity's radio show today talking about this, and he is pissed. He said that he is going to demand that Reid reveal his source. It is going to get to a point where Romney will not sit back and take anymore of this stupidity.

The tide is turning.

Oh, and according to the candidate, at some point, Romney was audited, perhaps more than once: “From time to time I’ve been audited.†So Romney has been audited, but somehow the IRS audit missed a ten-year period where he didn’t pay any taxes?
So, we know Romney released his return for 2010. Which means any “ten year window†would have to be 1999-2009 at the earliest.
His campaign said that Romney has not been audited in the past ten years – meaning the audit occurred before 2002.
Either the IRS audit of Romney from 2001 or earlier completely missed a ten year period of Romney “not paying any taxes for ten years†… or Harry Reid is full of crap.

Every bit as credible as this one?
This is how Political Spin is done in DC
Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher here in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Harry (senator (D) from Nevada) Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.
The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory.
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription:
'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.'
So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their mutual great-great uncle.
Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:
'Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.'
That's real POLITICAL SPIN! THAT is how it's done folks!
Analysis: This may come as a shock and a disappointment to some (while others will be shocked that anyone could possibly be shocked), but none of the above is true. It's an old joke, as a matter of fact, a bit of homespun political satire that has been circulating in various forms since 2000.
eta dang got the disclaimer so small even I couldn't reid it.
Imagine that. :rotf:

Was Remus a pederast, too? :???:

Romney to Reid: 'Put up or shut up' on source of 'untrue' tax claims
Mitt Romney lashed back at Harry Reid on Thursday in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, saying the Senate majority leader needs to "put up or shut up" after airing allegations about Romney's taxes.
Reid, a Nevada Democrat, first raised eyebrows Tuesday by saying in a news interview that someone had told him Romney went 10 years without paying taxes. He would only identify his source as an investor in Romney's former venture capital firm, Bain Capital, and he acknowledged, "I'm not certain" it's true.
That didn't stop Reid from taking to the Senate floor Thursday to accuse the Republican presidential candidate again of paying no taxes, part of a broader Democratic attack on Romney for declining to release more than two years of tax documents.
"The word's out that he hasn't paid any taxes for 10 years," Reid said. "Let him prove that he has paid taxes, because he hasn't."

Reid says that he is unsure it is true, but still says it? How stupid can someone be?
Obama should release his records. There is no proof that he is a citizen of this country, that he went to college, or that he is a christian. When obama does release his records, I will worry about Romney's tax returns.
Romney released 20 years of tax returns to McCain in 2008. You know they had to be recent. What a bunch of douchebags.
