LOS ANGELES – Gore Vidal, the author, playwright, politician and commentator whose novels, essays, plays and opinions were stamped by his immodest wit and unconventional wisdom has died, his nephew said Tuesday.
Vidal died at his home in the Hollywood Hills at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday of complications from pneumonia, Burr Steers said. Vidal had been living alone in the home and had been sick for "quite a while," he said.
Along with such contemporaries as Norman Mailer and Truman Capote, Vidal was among the last generation of literary writers who were also genuine celebrities -- fixtures on talk shows and in gossip columns, personalities of such size and appeal that even those who hadn't read their books knew who they were.
His works included hundreds of essays; the best-selling novels "Lincoln" and "Myra Breckenridge"; the groundbreaking "The City and the Pillar," among the first novels about openly gay characters; and the Tony-nominated play "The Best Man," revived on Broadway in 2012.
Tall and distinguished looking, with a haughty baritone not unlike that of his conservative arch-enemy William F. Buckley, Vidal appeared cold and cynical on the surface. But he bore a melancholy regard for lost worlds, for the primacy of the written word, for "the ancient American sense that whatever is wrong with human society can be put right by human action."
Vidal was uncomfortable with the literary and political establishment, and the feeling was mutual. Beyond an honorary National Book Award in 2009, he won few major writing prizes, lost both times he ran for office and initially declined membership into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, joking that he already belonged to the Diners Club. (He was eventually admitted, in 1999).

An article he (Vidal) wrote for Playboy bashing W in IIRC 2002 caused my dad to cancel his 22 year subscription.

I am not one to say bad things about the dead or piss on their graves. I say to Mr. Vidal may you R.I.P and may God have mercy on your soul. However, when I see that this man's passing causes DUmmies a great deal of emotional distress, mental anguish and real physical pain coupled with a strong desire to commit suicide.I find that their depression, pain and suffering somehow strengthens me both mentally and physically. Suddenly I have a bright new outlook about things in general, and life is good. I just feel better. I don't know why.
I know, I know. Some will say that this type of thinking is twisted and shows a lack of compassion and concern for our fellow man. I'll respond by saying that I have been observing DUmmie behavior and reading their ideas and opinions, lies, misinformation and constant outpouring of seething hatred for anything or anyone non-DUmmie for a long time. So I say that they don't deserve any consideration or compassion. I am not prepared to reach out to evil in any way or support it by showing compassion and understanding. They deserve every thing that happens to them and in the end I can only hope that there is a special place in Hell being reserved for them. Too harsh you say? I don't think so. :censored:

Good for him. Vidal was a blow hard. I read something somewhere that he tried to get the screenplay to Ben-Hur rewitten to make the Judah/Massala relationship, very obviously, homosexual.
Jerk. :hammer:

Has anyone ever seen the appearance that Vidal made with Bill Buckley where Buckley threatened to punch Vidal in the face? I can't remember exactly how it went, but Vidal called Buckley a Nazi or a facist and Buckley said something like: call me a nazi again and I'll push your queer face in. It was so funny and awesome to see a cool classy guy like Buckley ready to wail on the little Nance.

I wonder if anybody remembers that Bore Vidal made a cameo appearance during poor stupid Beth's scam.

Oh really? Do tell.

Oh really? Do tell.
Some primitive contacted him via e-mail, and he e-mailed the primitive back, wishing the soon-to-be-late red round one well.
The primitives got all agog and excited about it, and passed the e-mail around.
Alas for the primitives, the now-late author said nothing about the forces seeking to kill Andy.

Is that all? It might as well have been a form letter (http://io9.com/5048215/robert-heinleins-bizarre-fan-mail-response-letter).

That was it, but the primitives treated it as if from the Burning Bush.

I vaguely remember that, but I wasn't around for the Scamdal since it was about six months or more before I arrived at FR.
