Title: Sally Ride: did you know?
Post by: Gina on July 25, 2012, 07:01:03 AM
Did you know she was gay?

I didn't either and I don't give a ****!  ::)

http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/24/12933519-why-sally-ride-waited-until-her-death-to-tell-the-world-she-was-gay?lite

Quote
In an email today, Sally Ride's sister, Bear Ride, explained why the former astronaut kept quiet about her sexual orientation.

"In her inherent Norwegian reticence — in this and so many aspects of her personal life (wrestling with pancreatic cancer, for example) — she just didn't talk much (see Norwegian comment, and add to that the typical tight-lipped scientist thing)," Bear wrote. "If you read interviews from years and years back, you'll see that there was always a major frustration that she didn't comment much on 'how it feels to be the first American woman in space' — she just didn't think that way. She wanted to get the job done. Her personal feelings were just that: personal. Not right or wrong — simply Sally. Everyone who knows her well really got that about her."

Bear, a gay Presbyterian minister, takes a different approach.

"I'm a rather out-there advocate for LGBT [lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender] rights — my partner and I have even been arrested a couple of times in public protest!" she told me. "But that's me, and not Sally."

Here's the essay that Bear Ride has been sending around as a tribute to her sister:

"Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space and she was my big sister. Sally died peacefully on July 23rd after a courageous 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer.  I was at her side. We grew up in Encino, CA. Our parents, Joyce and Dale Ride, encouraged us to study hard, to do our best and to be anything we wanted to be.  In 1983 Newsweek quoted our father as saying, 'We might have encouraged, but mostly we just let them explore.' Our parents encouraged us to be curious, to keep our minds and hearts open and to respect all persons as children of God. Our parents taught us to explore, and we did. Sally studied science and I went to seminary. She became an astronaut and I was ordained as a Presbyterian minister.

"Sally lived her life to the fullest with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, joy, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless. Sally died the same way she lived: without fear.  Sally's signature statement was 'Reach for the Stars.' Surely she did this, and she blazed a trail for all the rest of us.

"My sister was a very private person. Sally had a very fundamental sense of privacy, it was just her nature, because we're Norwegians, through and through. People did not know she had pancreatic cancer, this is bound to be a huge shock. For 17 months, nobody knew, and everyone does now. Her memorial fund is going to be in support of pancreatic cancer.

"Most people did not know that Sally had a wonderfully loving relationship with Tam O'Shaughnessy for 27 years.  Sally never hid her relationship with Tam. They were partners, business partners in Sally Ride Science, they wrote books together, and Sally's very close friends, of course, knew of their love for each other.  We consider Tam a member of our family.

"I hope the pancreatic cancer community is going to be absolutely thrilled that there's now this advocate that they didn't know about.  And, I hope the GLBT community feels the same. I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them."

So she never  announced it for the entire world but after she is dead her gay sister decides to tell everyone?   Disgusting.

The queer community has no respect/regard for privacy.

Two gay sisters?

What are the odds of THAT happening?

Makes me question the upbringing of both of 'em.

I'm having serious reservations about the Presbyterian faith in which I worship, with respect to the policy that they embrace -- it's perfectly acceptable for gay ministers to be ordained and to serve in a church.

I have a problem with that policy.

Is there no sanctuary that simply refuses to call attention to one's sexual orientation? Why is it necessary for a faith to accommodate - deliberately - that tiny minority of people who are abnormal vis a vis their sexual practices?

Hey -- get this straight. When I go to church, I go to worship God. I could not care LESS who else in that place is puffing peters or munching carpets. At the same time, I find it offensive to have to adopt a POLICY that singles out those people.

I didn't, but now that she's in the news I'm sure someone with an agenda will be sure to remind me repeatedly.

Which is why I only go to PCA (Presbyterian Church of America) churches, not PCUSA (Pres. Church USA).   The former split from the latter due to the infringing liberal policies some churches were embracing.  Some people think PCA are too uptight, but it's a perfect fit for me.

The people that knew are the people she and her partner WANTED to know about them.

Sally's obit - the one she and her partner wrote together - mentioned "partner" without the nitty-gritty details. It was how Sally wanted it.

What her sister is doing...is nothing but cashing in on Sally's death to use for her own agenda.

Sooooo tacky. Not to mention totally disrespectful.

With a sister like that....who needs an enemy?

A mentally unbalanced radical homosexual sister feasting on the dignity of her famous dead sister?  Tell me it ain't so!

yes, I'm aware of the difference. This is off-topic a bit, but PCUSA only last year had a fundamental change in the Book of Order that no longer precludes practicing gays from becoming Teaching Elders (pastors).

I'm wrestling with that one. We have a Cumberland Presbyterian Church in my town, but I don't know enough about that church/denomination to make a determination.

Her obituary says she was survived by her partner of 27 years so I don't think the Sister is the 1 who said it, Sally probably approved her partner being mentioned.

Can't really do that. The Methodists are largely centrally controlled, including determining who the pastor is. Don't care for that practice.

It doesn't matter . They didn't have to say anything but then again there would have been someone that would have told and against Dr rides wishes as well. That is why it only said "Partner" for 27 years she didn't want anyone to know. All I know or care about her is that she got to be what a lot of kids wish they could be and that is an Astronaut and to go into space. A more select group of people you may not find anywhere and that is what matters and the job that they do for all of us.

Who on earth cares about the sex life of Sally.  I cannot understand why her gay sister decided to out her after her death.

Much care and love needs to be given to her partner for 27 years, Good working partnership and who gives a rats ass what their personal relationship was.   So how does the sister Bear know they Sally was having sex with her partner, was she there in the bedroom ?

Good grief what the Gays will go to to make gay sex normal. Sally was married for 5 years, this does not make her Gay but bisexual.

The left have to jump on something like this every time just to prove the worth of *gays.

*substitute any of their protected classes that you want.

I don't care about that. It's an individual achievement, the person didn't do it for their  "class".

The LGBT community has no shame at all. I have a sister in law(well ex SIL I guess :-)) who lives with her partner of many years. Neither woman is out there wearing the gay on the sleeve. They just live as two normal individuals and could probably be mistaken for roommates or even sisters to the outside world. They live, work, raise children, and disabled relatives together and they are so subtle about things it really would leave you wondering in the outside world are they or aren't they. I suspect Sally Ride and her partner lives their lives in the same understated way. LGbt ilk, there is a reason these ladies lived this way and it's nothing suspicious about being in the closet. They are just your average, private, dignified human beings. In fact, how they lived--the quiet lives like most heterosexuals do, is all really most of us on 'this side' would like. Imagine that to act and behave like fellow dignified and civilized human beings.

My bet is these two ladies probably had a mountain of conservative friends too. I doubt they were rejected in their homes. Because of the dignity and total normalcy in which they lived their lives as extraordinarily bright women.

Sally Ride deserves far more dignity then a bunch of tu tu wearing, phallus sucking queens using her as a poster child.

I think Sally just goes to prove that you don't have to be a special class person to go the the Heavens.  She did it on her own. She didn't use her sexual prefernences just to get ahead like so many of these gays do.  I admire her.  I admire her even more for not harping on her sexual identity and actually doing her job.

(Okay, my libertarian streak is coming through now) See, this is the type of couple who don't make a big fuss about "gay marriage". IMHO, if they wanted a civil union (which it should be called), they would just quietly slip away and make it happen. No muss, no fuss.

Absolutely agree. And I'd bet money these two ladies had their affairs in order so that there is no ambiguity as to who made decisions or manages ones affairs in a situation like this. They just got it done.

What is it that makes people want to discuss their sexual habits in front of everyone, the gay community is famous for this nonsense. Common decency would dictate that there are just some things you don't openly discuss. I don't mean you have to be ashamed of your choices I am just saying to have some respect for others who aren't interested in knowing about your sex life.

Sally Ride was a brave soul and a pioneer. It takes a pretty brave person to strap yourself into a space vehicle and get blasted into orbit, you have to respect people like that. I am interested in her life and accomplishments and I could care less about the details of her sex life....enough already it is none of business.

The militant gays want to be in the public's face, to FORCE the public to accept and tolerate their in your face lifestyle. Legitimacy is what they desire most. You're a bigot if you resist their ovations.

I think her partner would get them, as long as no family member contestef.
