US poverty on track to reach 46-year high; suburbs, underemployed workers, children hit hard
WASHINGTON — The ranks of America’s poor are on track to climb to levels unseen in nearly half a century, erasing gains from the war on poverty in the 1960s amid a weak economy and fraying government safety net.
....
The Associated Press surveyed more than a dozen economists, think tanks and academics, both nonpartisan and those with known liberal or conservative leanings, and found a broad consensus: The official poverty rate will rise from 15.1 percent in 2010, climbing as high as 15.7 percent. Several predicted a more modest gain, but even a 0.1 percentage point increase would put poverty at the highest since 1965.
Poverty is spreading at record levels across many groups, from underemployed workers and suburban families to the poorest poor. More discouraged workers are giving up on the job market, leaving them vulnerable as unemployment aid begins to run out. Suburbs are seeing increases in poverty, including in such political battlegrounds as Colorado, Florida and Nevada, where voters are coping with a new norm of living hand to mouth.
....
Demographers also say:
—Poverty will remain above the pre-recession level of 12.5 percent for many more years. Several predicted that peak poverty levels — 15 percent to 16 percent — will last at least until 2014, due to expiring unemployment benefits, a jobless rate persistently above 6 percent and weak wage growth.
—Suburban poverty, already at a record level of 11.8 percent, will increase again in 2011.
—Part-time or underemployed workers, who saw a record 15 percent poverty in 2010, will rise to a new high.
—Poverty among people 65 and older will remain at historically low levels, buoyed by Social Security cash payments.
—Child poverty will increase from its 22 percent level in 2010.

He and the dems are still trying to fight fair. The evil T-bagging corporatist republicons fight dirty, have no morals and would rather see this country destroyed then give an inch.

Hope & change, baby. Hope and change...
You hope to have any change left.

This is another accomplishment to add to Barry's list. What a great President he is......

To quote Hank Williams, Jr.
"I'll keep my GUNS, my FREEDOM, my RELIGION, and my COUNTRY! You can keep the CHANGE!"

Well dummy... looks like the rich are losing money under the obumble socialist admin too.
Suck it dummy (http://www.cnbc.com/id/48257611)
Oh and we got this little link from the article, from none other than obumbles government, about how much the evil 1 percenters pay in taxes.
An excerpt:
In 2009, the shares of federal taxes paid by households in certain income quintiles were:
Lowest quintile: 0.3 percent
Middle quintile: 9.4 percent
Highest quintile: 67.9 percent
Government said it, must be true!!! (http://www.cbo.gov/publication/43373)
I bet you dummies are in the lowest quintile. A MA in dumbassery studies just don't pay what it used to I guess. :loser:

I notice the little note on those 65 and older.
I think when my generation(X) gets to old age, we'll be back to some record numbers for poverty again among seniors. My age group from what I've seen have been hit hardest at a time when we should be at our peek of employ ability and earnings. This won't equate for anything good imo when we reach 65. I predict because of our smaller numbers we will be the forgotten generation of elderly once things are back on track again too. Mark the words.

I agree with you. And I predict America will be a shell of what it once was. You can thank the policies of the liberal democrats for that. We are rapidly approaching the tipping point where the parasites outnumber the producers. Something will give... it has too.

So can we declare the war on poverty is lost and bring the troops home?

The war on poverty was lost before it even started. You can't win a war on poverty when using socialist ideas as ammo.

Does that mean ending almost all welfare? I'd say we end all welfare for able bodied people that won't work.

Hear, hear. I agree.
-
Republican or Democrat we need to stop making trade deals with slavers like China and start looking out for number one.
-
Of course, 56 years ago, 2/3 of the people in what is called 'Poverty' now would've been considered 'Working class' and 'Lower Middle Class.'
-
Amazing how the day ABM took office the homeless, starving kids & old folks eating cat food dissapeared from the news.
-
Check out the liberal media bias:

Have there really been any gains from LBJ's stuff?
Is the government safety net really fraying when millions go on foodstamps, there are advertisements to promote it, and 78,000 or so people went on SS Disability? Free Obamaphones? People just now waking up to the fact that people can use their benefit cards for booze, smokes, casinos, and strippers?
-
How much of this is also due to changing the standards of what is called poverty? I would imagine that some of those in poverty live better lives than lower middle class people did decades ago.

We don't have the right to regulate how they spend their money, it's their money to spend however the want blah-blah-blah....just ask any DUmmie.
On second thought, please don't ask 'em. I've heard that shit 'til I'm sick of it.

Looks like what Obama did for the southside of chicago he is doing for all of the USA.

Essentially everyone in the US as compared to the world is a 1%er.
A bit of reality:
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the poverty line for an individual in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., was $10,830 in 2010. Compared to global measures of GDP per capita for 2010, an individual at the poverty line in the United States has an income in between the average for Lithuania and Seychelles, ranked 49th and 50th. This may sound less than ideal for those of us accustomed to the lifestyle and conveniences of the first world. But put differently, someone at the poverty line in the United States is in the top 14% of the global income distribution.
http://www.policymic.com/articles/2636/compared-to-the-rest-of-the-world-americans-are-all-the-1
In the states a family of 3 that earns just over 21K a year is in "poverty".

Wineslob, someone over at the DUmp started a thread pointing that out, saying "we are the 1%." It didn't sit very well, and they got very angry. How dare the poster interfere with their sense of victimhood?

If you define being poor as being in the bottom 10%, 15%, 20%, whatever, then a mission to raise everyone out of poverty has failed due to the end state being mathematically and logically impossible. Unfortunately, that is exactly what they did.

Announcement: Lawrence O'donnel announces that the biggest winner out of this is obama. You can now return to you regularly scheduled program.

US poverty on track to reach 46-year high...2012 minus 46 years = 1966...hey, that was a democrat controlled government too, wasn't it.
