W declines invitation and will not attend GOP convention
and entire convention sighs in relief--now can they keep the Dick from coming?
Former President George W. Bush will not attend the Republican convention next month in Tampa, Politico reports.
Said a spokesman: "President Bush was grateful for the invitation to the Republican National Convention. He supports Governor Romney and wants him to succeed. President Bush is confident that Mitt Romney will be a great President. But he's still enjoying his time off the political stage and respectfully declined the invitation to go to Tampa."
This seems like a classic Friday news dump.

There are only three snarky comments so far, nothing worth bringing over.
However, President Bush has been a gentleman i the way he has handled his post presidency, unlike Carter and Clinton. President Bush has kept a pretty low profile politically which more past presidents should do.
That being said, him declining the invitation isn't nearly as noteworthy as all of the in-office DemonRats that are avoiding the DemonRat convention.
So many DemonRats have said they aren't going that Pelousy has had to give Obama cover by saying that some should stay in their own districts and work on their own campaigns instead of attending the convention.

Bush, like it or not, realizes that his showing up gives the Dems ammo. Better to stay on the sidelines until 2016. He's doing fine on the rubber chicken circuit, working on his memoirs, getting his library built--and I hope to God it doesn't look like that doublewide trailer that is the Clinton Library.

I still have some issues with Bush but I think when everything is said and done he did a good job for us. He is doing the right thing here and the DUmmies can read anything into his decision they want. He can still show his support for Romney in other ways he doesn't need to overshadow him at the convention. Good decision Mr. President.

I think you nailed it pretty well there, Sparky.

It may have a little to do with that . I think primarily it's Bush's attitude that he had his time of Fame & power ,now it's up to the future and Historians to decide if his Job as president was a successful one. He has also stated that he won't comment on the Presidential race other than that he wholeheartedly supports Romney.

How many Democrats serving in elected office have decided to not show up at the Democratic Convention? what are they afraid of? lunacy on display?

Bush's whole premise in this is that he does not want to be a political pundit. And he feels deeply that a former President should NOT talk ill of the current President, or try to tell the current President what he should do. Recently he blasted Clinton for doing that.
President Bush is just showing again that he is a very classy man, and doesn't want to take the lime light from Romney. Who him, and his dad are both supporting.
If the DUmp douches don't like it, they can go shove it. Besides, they need to worry about people not showing up at their convention more, as 30+ dems have already said that they will not be going.
Now Sarah Palin is going to be there, and from what I am hearing, going to speak. There is something to make their back hairs stand.

Bush had his 8 years and probably just wants to be left alone. I've said it before and I'll say it again... being pres of the USA has got to be the worst job in the world. Living in a fishbowl, everything you say and do microanalyzed, whatever you say will piss someone off, being vilified no matter what. Crappy job in my opinion.
I still think anyone that wants that job has to be a tad this side of nuts.

He has said a couple of times that he is enjoying doing his own thing and being out of the spot light. Which he has every right to do. He did his duty as a great American ....

The reason it WAS a good decision is NOT because it would have given the opposition ammo. Rather, it's because the GOP is NOT moderate-trending and would have DEPRESSED our side more. There IS a difference. Remember, Reagan went to the 1992 convention, and literally stole the show (it was his final political appearance). In fact, Clinton was all set to run away with the election but only won with 43% of the popular vote.
Bottom line: When conservatives run the show, the grass roots will show up in droves. Bush is not a conservative. And THAT'S the key.

He is a neoconservative. Him, Cheney, Powell, and Rice are all neoconservatives.

The term "neoconservative" is a misnomer at best. True conservatives would never refer to themselves as such. Libertarians not even close.
Without being too picky, the literal translation of neo-conservative is "new (-ly-turned) conservative," which still translates to someone being truly conservative. This is NOT Bush (if anything, only Cheney was the real conservative on in the administration, but I digress). Now, I can't say that I'm not involved in the alliteration game. I, along with other conservatives, call moderate republicans "RINO's", even though technically the acronym is only correct if we ascribe the Republican Party as being conservative only.
But when I hear someone is a "neo-conservative," it means someone from the LEFT is making the "accusation" about someone being "conservative," regardless of the individual's actual level of republican party involvement. Wikipedia is not the endall, by the way; it's only the opinion of the writers based upon the references they give, which are more telling.

Cheney is the one true Conservative in the bunch.
I think the term you're looking for in regards to Bush (41 & 43) as well as Powell is neo statist.

.....now it's up to the future and historians to decide if his Job as president was a successful one.....
I still think that by mid-century, George Bush'll be gracing our $20 bills.
Of course, alas, the way Barack Milhous is running things, a $20 bill won't be worth twenty cents by the middle of this current decade.....
-
- jimmah carter (d): Pretends to be politically inactive, becomes politically active, first ex-POTUS to criticize USA from beyond water's edge.
- Ronald Reagan (R): Retires from public life, quietly writes memoirs, very quietly exits everything, classiest POTUS ever.
- George HW Bush (R): Retires from public life, quietly writes memoirs, spends time with family, does NOT advise POTUS son
b - illy bj clinton (d): waits a whole nanosecond before becoming the most politically active ex-POTUS since Grant (or before, or ever). Can't keep mouth shut (irony intended).
- George W. Bush (R): Retires from public life, quietly writes memoirs, spends time with family, SILENTLY works hard to help economy, literacy and life in Africa.
- barry baraky soetoro (d): has already made signs he will make bj look like a piker. Has magic mirror that always says he is King and God. Will visit Godhood after kicked out of People's House.

I dunno about his visage gracing any of our money but I believe once a critical study of his Stewardship as President is done he will get very high marks.

I think that Bush will be seen, in the passage of time, as a great president that understood the challenge of the islamonuts and set out to change the middle east and eliminate the problems that caused it. I think that obumbles will be seen as a weak, ineffective president that hastened, if not outright caused, the demise of the world's last true country that championed and promoted liberty.
And it will be a harsh verdict on what happens when the free media turns to supporting one political philosophy as opposed to remaining unbiased and being the watchdog of government.
Just my 2 cents.
