Title: Disproportionate Defense
Post by: alone on July 19, 2012, 03:39:02 PM
Why should we have a defense budget that is so drastically disproportionate with that of the rest of the world?   What military are we scared of?

Thoughts?

Why should we have a defense budget that is so drastically disproportionate with that of the rest of the world?

Because we can.

What military are we scared of?

None...hence the size and footprint of our Armed Forces.

You have none.

Do you know what the percentage of our budget is spent on it?

Psssst............................just under 19%

Add up SS, Medicare, and Unemployment...........................48.45%.

As for why the US spends more than other countries?  Most of the countries rely on the US for protection which allows them to spend more money on socialist government.

I'm not saying we should spend less, because ultimately that money spent on the military is spent to defend the US.

My thinking, since way back in high school has always been that military spending is a priority.  Why have the greatest nation on earth if you can't defend it?

Would you build a mansion filled with things that people want and not spend money on security?

Mainly I'm thinking you don't know very much about global defense issues, or our own parochial ones for that matter.

Because I'm feeling remarkably jovial today, let me just note this to you for further cogitation:  The reason the US takes relatively light casualties in our military encounters (Painful as each and every one of them is) is not because our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are more valorous or inherently more suited to military endeavors than anyone else, far from it...they're no slouches, but a reading of WW1 or WW2 memoirs from the opposite side (The two wars for which there are plenty of such to read in English*) will tell you that nobody has a corner on courage, resolution, or skill.  The thing that has set us apart since the end of the Cold War is that we can dominate the battlefield by joint and combined integration of support, command, and maneuver assets that (Combined with well-trained and motivated troops) makes it essentially suicidal to take us on in a straight-up fight.  In fact we do our very damnedest to engineer things so it is NOT a straight-up fight, because while that would involve a lot less money, equipment, and infrastructure, it would get a lot more of our people killed and messed up instead of killing the enemy's people and messing them up.

*I would particularly recommend Samurai!, Storm of Steel, The Forgotten Soldier, and Japanese Destroyer Captain in that regard.

Well, back before the bleeding hearts took over, back when you were allowed to shoot a MoFo for stealing your stuff, a latched screem door was all the security you needed.

"Of the four wars that came about in my lifetime, none were because the U.S. was too strong."  -Ronaldus Maximus

You were saying, noob?

Oh, and for the record, our defense spending is about 1/3 of what we spend on education in this country.  We spend LESS than 4 percent of GDP on defense, a Constitutionally mandated function.  Compare this to the 17 percent of GDP the government spend on non-mandated "human resources" functions like Social Security, welfare, etc.

If you are going to troll a conservative board, please TRY to come up with more interesting questions.

An old saying is, "The best defense is a good offense." Disproportionate Defense is a good strategy, as no one in their right mind will make war with a nation like us. Only a terrorist group, scattered and hidden can do anything, and Al Queda today is in tatters, it's leadership is wiped out, even Ossama is gone (despite having sanctuary in a friendly country).

Disproportionate Defense means we can reach guys like Bin Laden. Its a survival trait, not a liability.

There have been a number of decent responses to the one post troll.
Does Mr one post, Alone have the courage to come back and defend his silly point?

Himmmmmm. does this poster not lock their doors, leave their car with the keys in it

This new Strange Stuff has to look at America the same way they look at themselves or home.   Why do we take defence of our selves and property seriously ????   I do not begrudge the homeless that guard their only belongings  in a shopping cart--that is all they have.

Well little m/f,   America is all we have. And we are proud of America as can be.   So when one takes pride in anything, be a parent or child, a new car or ones home, the people and even the wild life protect  what they have.

We WORK for what we have and at times have to defend it with our lives.

So we buy home security and watch our kids at play, get guard dogs and mean cats to keep us safe.   We pay taxes to have a cop hanging out and have rules and regulations so we do not have to worry about buying food with a needle in it.

Mean while others are salivating on the idea that they can leave their God forsaken world to come here and bring us down to the life style they fled from.

Get a grip here, defence of our children , ourselves is to survive.  We are not the aggressors unless we are attacked and unless you are mentally ill and expect others to save your sorry ass as you hide ------

I'm going to answer ala Gnads so this DUmmie will get it:

Once you've clawed your way to the spot of top dog you don't lay down in front of a fire and start gnawing bones.  There's always another enemy, sometimes disguised as a friend.
