What happened to the dream?
I have never found pride in my being a white southerner but I have never been ashamed to be one either;
I have always hoped to be able to show the rest of the world we are not all bigots;
I supported Al Sharpton when he ran for president then I supported Barack Obama and did so proudly, not because they are black but I supported what they believed in, what they said.
I have supported President Obama, and I am proud that he is my president.
I find hope when I see pictures of those who go to his rallies. They are young and old, white and black, they are gay and straight, they are from many different cultures and are a cross section of America. It brings tears to my eyes when I see children drawn to this president. These children are our future and it give me hope when I see pictures like the one I saw here on DU of a small child leaning over to kiss President Obama. These people, especially the children don't care he is black. They are proud he is THEIR president. I am proud he is MY president.
However I am becoming to be ashamed to be a white southerner. When I hear all the code words for racism it grieves me to think in 2012 race is still a matter of concern for some. When I see people hate President Obama for no real reason other than he is a black man, when I see people support a candidate who would do things which would impoverish them just so they will no longer have a black man as president, it make me ashamed to be associated with that sort of person, even if it is just because of out sharing a skin tone and we live in the same part of the country.
I once had a hope that within my life we could stand together and simply call ourselves American, for me that was the dream of Martin Luther King Jr., that hope is starting to fade.

1. If it makes you feel any better
I live in Michigan and I have run into tons of racists. These people are in their 20's. Racism is going nowhere. I hope my upcoming move to Detroit gets me away from the rednecks I am currently surrounded by.
Liberals are the most racist people in this country, but they show it by the lowered expectations they impose on blacks and by how they treat any black person that dares to think for themselves.

When racism is defined as disagreeing with someone politically who just happens to be a minority, then there's nothing rational to discuss with someone who holds that viewpoint. That they believe normal people agree with them only highlights their own immaturity and stupidity.

I've never found pride in being a WHITE southerner either, but that's because I'm not a racist bigot like the liberal left. I am proud to be a southerner. If you're not proud to be a southerner it's a pretty good sign that you're not really a southerner. Any of us real southerners will be more than happy to give you directions on how to leave.

So this moron is moving into a high black area filled with nothing low income developments and boarded up buildings? Yeah, you won't find any rednecks there, just gangs and drive by shootings. Good choice there, Stella....
I have family who live in Deerfield Michigan. About 70 miles outside of Detroit. They are always telling me that Detroit is a cesspool. The only reason why they are staying there is because my uncle grew up there, and his family lives there. Other wise they would be out of there faster than they know what happen.

The Great Society all but annihilated the black family and made an entire race a permanent under caste in this country, wholly dependent on the federal government.

All while making empty promise after empty promise of "hope and change" and giving them a bogeyman to keep them all worked up (racism, the 'man', racism, the evil riiiich, racism, etc.).
And if anyone ever tried to get out of the liberal-caused quagmire that they're in, they become hated and reviled. Jesse 'n Al and people like that will make sure of that.

Never mind that all they want is a better life for them and their children, something the democrats have been promising, but purposely failing to deliver for decades now. Because if blacks were ever allowed to "leave the plantation" and make a better life for themselves and their families, they would no longer need the government to survive and the democrats would lose them as a reliable voting base.

What do you mean happened to the dream of MLK? Go to damn near any large city in this Country and you will see a MLK blvd before you see any blvd named after a former elected President.

I won't excuse African Americans anymore as victims of liberals. From my experience what I've seen happening is blacks have now become that which they claimed to loath while holding other races hostage with the accusation of racism. More times t hen not it is blacks that I find to be at least subtly racist, exclusionary, and isolated in this myth of their skin color and 'culture' defining their 'kind'. They are edging closer and closer to the racism they claimed to reject during mlk's time. It's a shame really. Blacks need to stop being looked at as victims by conservative and liberal alike. Like anyone else the racist attitudes growing in a. Group should be confronted and we offer just as many excuses as liberals for a situation whether it's attitude or economic means that really gets back to personal responsibility.

They most certainly do. I just think its high time to stop making excuses for the African American community and start holding people responsible for the things that are said and done. On both sides blacks are kind of looked at like pawns and what I happening is that community at large is bein encouraged in bad behavior and attitude because of it.
And things like the Zimmerman/Martin incident...does it not occur to anyone including that community that the rush to judgement harkens back to a time when blacks were on the receiving end of accusations of false accusatory and assumptions. It's just as wrong now with different players as it was then.
