Turkey Denies Fighter Shot Down by Syria
The General Staff of Turkey’s Armed Forces on Friday backed down from its previous claim that its fighter jet was downed last month by Syrian forces.
“The actual cause of the incident will be established after the plane wreckage is raised from the seabed,†the General Staff said in a statement. "No traces of explosives or flammable products were found on the debris recovered from the sea."
According to some media reports, the F-4 Phantom probably crashed due to human error after the pilots failed to perform an evasive maneuver to avoid the Syrian missile.
...
Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi has said his country's forces may have mistaken the Turkish jet for an Israeli one.

Anyway the source is kinda funny too.
Maybe this should just be moved to Mind Numbing Stupidity.

That's some deep insight right there.

It wouldn't surprise me. Arab pilots are notoriously inept. Almost as bad as owebuma.

Even if your backseater is screaming in your ear to bank left while he is launching counter measures?
I just thought that it was funny because, more then likely, as soon as that SAM battery looked at them sideways that jet was trying to save it's own life.
I suppose just going along fat, dumb and happy while your locked up is bad for your health.

Corner speed for F-4's is about 450kt and 6.5 "G". Rapid ham fisted onsets can easily blackout a crew.

This is what I was focused on earlier, of course if you fail to perform an evasive maneuver that is not exactally a ham fisted maneuver.
Actually, just for giggles I'm looking at a different angle.
It's not enough to just say F-4 Phantom II, this was a recon variant and I saw it earlier but I have to try to find it again.

Ok, I think I might have found it...RF-4ETM.
From here...

I've never seen this website before so I don't how reliable it is.

Oh well, I haven't been able to find any performance data that would contravene what obumazombie posted earlier.
If I got the variant right it just seems to be an old German RF-4e that got a recon package upgrade.
I guess that there is still just too much conjecture out there and the stories from both Turkey and Syria are still evolving but I'll bet that Israel saw what happened and they ain't talkin.

I would be surprised if the pilot was found to be even marginally competent, if he was Arab.

That's almost as funny as the Mexican Air Force.

You should go easy on the Mexican Air Force. They only have 12 F-5E's and that isn't a lot. They do have several Helicopters of different makes though. Oh well I guess the Mexican Air Force can paint their F-5s in black and have a TOP GUN moment or two.
