Poll question: Under 40s poll: Are you better off than your parents?
I am posting this poll out of curiosity, in light of the recent posts here about the decline of the middle class, professionals in poverty, and the end of the American Dream (tm).
Are you better off than your parents at a comparable stage in their lives vis a vis ability to own a home, retirement prospects, standard of living, etc.?
Poll result (45 votes)
I am much better off than my parents (8 votes, 18%) Vote
I am slightly better off than my parents (2 votes, 4%) Vote
I am doing about the same as my parents (6 votes, 13%) Vote
I am slightly worse off than my parents (5 votes, 11%) Vote
I am much worse off than my parents (22 votes, 49%) Vote
Other - please explain (2 votes, 4%) Vote
Enough said.

Oh yes, the primitive once known as the StellaBlue primitive.
The chronically-unhappy primitive, who always found a job she didn't like.
-
They would be the parents own a house, while they only have the basement to call their own.

Have any of the DUmmies caught onto the fact that this is StellaBlue reincarnated?

I dunno, but remember, the StellaBlue primitive was always popular with the other primitives.
I still have no idea why she got mausoleumed.

For some reason, I believe she asked to get the granite slab as StellaBlue. I could be wrong.

I think there was some sort of sex related fracas in the lounge and she and a couple of others were tombstoned at about the same time.

Oh how I've missed Stella Blue and her constant whining.

2. Comparison
Edited on Tue May-20-08 01:14 PM by LucyParsons
At my age:
My parents
Had upgraded to their second owned home (typical 3/2 1960s suburban)
Had stable state government jobs with great traditional benefits
Had two late-model cars
Had no debt
Were able to support baby me
I
Rent a 600 square foot apartment
Have a stable government job with comparatively good benefits (which are currently under threat by our state legislature)
Have one late-model low-market car
Owe $45,000 in student debt and five figures of credit card debt
Cannot conceive of being able to support a family
Could it be that your parents took a job and then stuck with it and did what they were supposed to do? Stella Blue started bitching within one or two days and always knew how everybody else was incompetent and out to get her.
Before you accrued $45K in student loans you probably should have checked to see if there was any type of demand for your degree.

7. You're doing fine if you have rich parents
Who paid for your college, got you a job through connections, etc.
Those of us who had to accrue debt to get a degree (while working 20 hours a week, in my case), have found out too late that the goalposts have been moved: a college degree is not only no longer an entry ticket to the middle class, it is - for a lot of us - not even a good idea.
I know a number of people younger than Stella Blue, without rich parents who are doing quite well. Then again they didn't get degrees in womens studies either.

Thank goodness!! There's a disease more liberals need to catch.

Interesting poll. I would say my wife (Sadly Democratic in her politics, but not beyond redemption) and I are doing markedly better than my parents, due in no small part to both our parents' efforts to put all their kids on their way as best they could (if limited to letting them hang around the house after high school and paying undergraduate tuition and books for the land grant State university in town); my little sister, on the other hand, being considerably more of a moonbat than my wife and married to another moonbat, will perhaps end up roughly even with the parents, if that.
